What do yuo think it is? Do you think it only affects the way you look, or is it the true inner personality, or is it some of both? What do YOU think it is?
Please post your ascendant sign along with your opinion.

cancer..

to sum it up for me, the rising sign is mostly physical appearance and the way in which we are perceived or sensed energetically.

Gemini rising.

Mostly it's a nuisance. I think it's got a fairly strong affect on me, but I've also got Saturn in Gemini, and since Saturn rules Capricorn, well I think it's pronounced somehow.

Seemingly the most stable, productive time in my life was when I really (unconsciously) took on my Capricornian traits. However, I think my peace lies in finding a way to express each aspect of my personality.

Lately I've been thinking that my chart is like a company, and the big boss Capricorn has to find a way to make all the other parts function in harmony. Does that make sense to think of it that way?

Yes it does AG. You know, I have Aqua Rising, and Saturn in Aqua, so that's similar to you. I find that it has a strong affect on me too.

BoE and AG, you guys should get together. Lets do a composite? I almost said it months ago and held myself back, but I think there may be a love match.

BOE.. virgo w/ aqua asc
AG... cap w/ gem asc / virgo moon

BOE where is your moon?

Funny, I have Saturn in Leo and Leo rising.

I appear Leo like. I have a flair for the dramatic in taste, but I also like classics.
So If I wear classic clothes, I will embellish with funky jewellery or a great hat.. something a bit creative. But then I have a Cappy Moon.
Big fan of comfy fabrics, but I have to look at least passable.. won't leave the house confidently, ( I still do it, but not confidently) If I am looking scattered.. intentional chaos is different.
I will talk to anyone, I am funny, but I can have a good heart to heart instead of being the life of the party.. I am adaptable.
In alot of ways, even if I didn't KNOW I had a Leo ascendant, I would have no question.....
Even my eyes are gold green like a lion's. Big mane of curly hair.

I very much identify with my Ascendant, and it impacts a lot, I think.....

What is important about a Rising Sign?

The ruling planet! Its sign, house placement and the aspects it makes to the other planets.

Good aspects show that the houses ruled by the 2 planets, are in sync or run smoothly together, one being the Ascendant Ruler (so yourself)

example: Jupiter trine Mercury
Jupiter ruling the Ascendant (Sag)
and Mercury (Descendant) Gemini
this would show good relationships/partnerships, or at least easy to maintain.

Acoustic God
You're kind of like a double Capricorn with your Sun and Asc./Saturn conjunction.
Your Air Saturn is complementary to your Venus/Neptune/Mercury (your ruler) stellium.

My Asc is 29 deg Virgo and my 1st house is fully in Libra. I have all that Virgo shyness and most other things associated with the sign but Libra-Venusian qualities are something I aspire to - most characteristics I want to foster in me are Libran in nature. (Not that every Libra is always very good with them ) Also the general need for balance, grace & justice that has become more and more pronounced with every year. I guess (or should I say hope) that this aspiration is somewhat visible.

OMG I had no idea about that. My asc is gem (ruled by Merc) and dc sag (ruled by Jupiter) and they conjunct, though loosely, in the 10th.. thx Lala

oh actually, is it negative if the sign the conjunction is in (Pisces) squares your Asc and DC?

Since I still have Virgo AC the ruler is Mercury. Mercury in 4th conj, IC. Sounds like 'hides face in the depth of the soul' combination. Über-private.

Wow, how uncanny!
I am a Cappy Ascendant and my Saturn is also in Capricorn!
What a neat pattern.

To me, my ascendant is just part of who I am, I can feel it welling up inside of me when it has affect on my character. In things I might do or say. It's sort of like a hidden part of me but also like the very outer part of me too. I do think it's probably how I'm viewed.
OK, this might sound completely wierd and crazy, but in terms of colours I see my Virgo sun as an Indigo splodge, my Aries Moon as a big red dot above and my Cappy Ascendant as a fuzz of green which surrounds the whole thing.
It completes me

Hmmmmm..... my ascendant,It's my cage, cause it's totally unlike me,the real me,when people first meet me,they think I'm this innocent little sweet guy who doesnt say much, very very quiet....but once they get to know me,It's completely different...The gemini sun and cancer warmth come out,and melt away the icy scorp and the cold saturn conj....

Sooo..It's almost like a soul cage which prevents me from interacting normally with a person...initially..

Libra rising.
phew. well, it's interesting. I definitely see it in me though I sometimes love it and sometimes hate it. I hate when people think I am just a flirty, flaky little thing. My voice is very soft and feminine and I feel like it doesn't show my personality well. Plus people seem to think you need to have a deep voice to be intelligent. Has anyone noticed that in intellectual discussions, women tend to drop their voices? I actually wrote a rant a few months back about hating my ascendant and people not at all knowing who I am because of it. But I've sort of grown used to it and it's almost a fun game: see if you can get past all my B.S. and to the real me! Then you're in for a real surprise. Not many get there. Libra makes me get along with everyone. It gives me empathy, I think and diplomacy. Also the debate thing, I definitely have that. I think the ascendant represents our social skills. I don't know if that makes sense. Our social skills and all of the B.S. that we unconsciously project to protect ourselves. Also, definitely appearance. I like Libra for some the femininity it's given me because the rest of my chart is very masculine. Well, even Libra is sort of androgynous, isn't it? Yeah, also the allure w/ men. That's fun. Sometimes. Not at 4am walking home drunk, but sometimes.

Venus conjunct Sun
(venus(libra)-ascendant, sun(leo)-moon)
is that what you mean lalalinda?

ok, I've decided, after reading the cage thing. I think the ascendant is like a full body armour protecting us as we bounce around the world. And then when we stop for a while in a place, the armour comes off and.. you know all that other stuff comes out. Then the armour comes on again and off we go, bouncing around the world until we reach another harbour.

pixel - i forgot you have the same ascendant and saturn signs as i do - do you get discrepancies where some sites may say your saturn is in leo or it's in virgo? it's weird. whatever. trendy (lol, yeah, my own) and eccentric with a splash of conservative - all in all, comfortable. again, weird and definitely odd-ballish. i get the flash-from-the-past desires also. hey - fashion doesn't die - it rest, recovers, and recycles

anyway, i call the rising sign gasolina. despite everything else in the chart - the rising is always gassing.

virgo rising (but saturn in scorp, not virgo): I dress as boringly and conservatively as possible (no offence virgos), but that could be my venus in capricorn taste rather than the ascendant. Although if someone wanted me to walk around town with a sticker on my head, or dared me to wear something for a day i probably would, got to be a good sport, being a sag and all. Looks - i don't fit any of the looks descriptions of virgo rising, think that has way more to do with genetics, but fit the personality, of seeming neat, quiet, shy, etc. etc. etc.

Ugh, sorry for such a boring paragraph.

29*Gemini Rising

Sooo, I think I am more Cancerian in appearance and actions. But I guess there's a reason for my having that 1* of Gem on the cusp of which I see a tiny bit of in my actions (is there such a thing as a grand trine between sun/rising/moon?? I'm thinking it's a no?). My 'signature planet' is Mercury, and my Mercury is in Virgo in the 4th house.

There's a neat quote in one of my books called The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever need (cheesy name I know, but great book!). it uses an analogy for the sun/moon/rising. I don't have it with me but it went something like this: 1st meeting someone is like coming up to the front door of their house. you basically can see what the house looks like from the outside (this is the rising). Then you go inside their home and can see them in their own comfortable atmosphere. You get to know them on a more personal level (this is the sun). Finally, if yer lucky, you can see their bedroom or a room deeper in their house that's more private (this is like the moon).

Lauren, yes isn't it cool
Jupiter and Mercury conjunct would tend to make your thinking/logic very optimistic choosing to look on the bright side rather than dwell on the negative.

Pretty much the same as your relationships.

In Pisces well thats just to cool.
Pisces co-rules Jupiter so it is comfortable in the 12th house (or in Pisces, same thing) A Spritual placement, This brings protection or an 11th hour friend

Jupiter squares are never really negative, (wasteful, yes) this adds character.
Coming from the 10th I can see, maybe, someone resenting your position, but not much more.

This applies twice because you have Virgo (Mercury) ruling a house also

Mutable Night Force, Saturn in Capricorn is going to make a sucess out of you (you have that stellium right? )

I kinda think of it as my defense mechanism. I think I already said this but my "no nonsense", supposedly mysterious , cappy rising kind of "hides" my warm, friendly, cancer sun until I really know you.It does play a part in my physical appearance, my skin is darker than the rest of my family...I also have the darkest hair in my family ( damn near jet black). My eyes are large and melancholic although I think that's cancerian. *but my cheeks are cancerian

i'll use ag's words , mine has been a nuisance for me , words slip out which i dont even want to say demolishing all the cancer's carefully planned thoughts ( merc in cancer) then again it also to an extent makes people take me abit eassily , something that contradicts .
positive side - hmmmmmmm , i can't guess any .
except this only have one sag i my chart , thats all the fire that i have .

I'd say I am more Taurean/Cancer in appreance. A tiny bit of gemini not as much.

Once I start talking you can tell I'm a gemini though LOL

Great answers, thanks all.

Who else has their asc. ruling planet aspecting their Sun? I think that might be a pattern to, come to think of it.
I have Uranus trine Sun.

lovely*~ My Moon is in Leo, but I don't think it matters. I live in Alabama at the moment. No matter how much I wish I didn't....
When did you think of that months ago? Was there a tread or something?

I have Leo Rising, but also Moon in Leo, which only reinforces the Leo part of me, so instead of perceiving my rising sign like an "armor" like someone else said, the Leo part of me is really internalized and integrated. Also, I have the Sun in First and in Virgo, and Mercury which rules Virgo in Leo, so I feel I am a real mixture of those two signs. Kinda boring, huh? -- I wonder what it must feel like to have one of those diamond shaped charts, with planets scattered all over the place, and a gezillion aspects shooting around. Brilliant? Creative? Multi-talented? what does it mean?? -- Maybe something for another thread...

ASC at 15 Virgo

The rising sign is the opening gamut - it's the focal point from which everything else in the chart position themselves and first begins to relate to each other as an actual *horoscope.* Sure you can have a Sun and moon sign, but you working partially blind without the rising sign if you are trying to draw a horoscope. So while all of astrology does not revolve around the rising sign, drawing horoscopes do.

Now in terms of the natal chart, this means that rising signs define how all your houses and planets relate to each other. It's not simply a matter of your "exterior vibe" or your physical appearence. In a way the ASC's what tells your Sun,moon, Venus, etc, which house they fall in and where the cusps of all the other houses will begin - that's a huge role. It's like the skeleton of the chart itself, and it begins with the rising sign.

Since the rising sign tells where everybody gets to sit at the table, naturally it plays a defining role to the tone and personality of your chart. It's like the master of ceremonies, in a way. Herein lies the strongest argument to to have the rising sign indicator your chart ruler (as opposed to your Sun sign).
