I just found this, thanks to GemStar recommending this guy's site for his astrology software reviews.

I think he really has a good point - we shouldn't be too stuck on birth charts alone - everybody is living in their own astrological world of progressions, transits, solar returns, etc.

"The Importance of Timing in Compatibility Assessment

As an astrologer, I've come to rely more and more upon transits, progressions, and dasas and bhuktis in assessing the compatibility of people coming to me for a chart comparison.

There are several reasons for this:

1. Determining whether the pair-bonding energy is strong or disturbed for each person.

For example, if a person is going through a period where the progressed Venus is conjunct, sextile, or trine the Sun or Moon (or vice versa, the progressed Sun or Moon is conjunct, sextile, or trine the natal Venus), the likelihood of wanting to partner is high. This may even serve as a cautionary note, if the person is dating an obviously inappropriate person, but is lost in the glamour of the progression and making poor choices.

On the other hand, if the person is experiencing a transit of Uranus square Venus, or the beginning of transiting Uranus or Pluto conjunct, square, or opposed to the Ascendant or to planets in the 7th house, this is a very unstable time for relationship, because the person having these transits is going through a cycle of independence and/or elimination, and much work will have to be done to maintain even pre-existing relationships.

It is therefore very important to evaluate the relationship energy for each individual at the time of the meeting.

2. Looking at whether this is a good time for relationship.

Vedic astrology has many tools for assessing the quality of time. By looking at both the natal chart and the Navamsa (marriage) chart, we can assess whether each person is in a time where relationship will go well, poorly, or middling.

If a relationship is begun during a period that is favorable for both parties, the relationship is much more likely to last and thrive (and, of course, vice versa). It's like watching an olympic athlete start their performance well or poorly, and their start affects the entire performance.

For example, if the Dasa being run by person A is a planet that is debilitated in the 3rd or 8th house of the Navamsa, the likelihood is that a relationship will end during this dasa. (Note: there are astrological factors that can reverse this assessment in some cases.)

If additionally, the bhukti (subperiod) planet is also combust in the birth chart, (or otherwise in a challenged position in the natal or navamsa chart) it is an even more likely time for relationship to be fraught with difficulties.

In constrast, if a person is running the dasa of a well placed lord of the 7th house (in the birth chart), who happens to be in its own sign and in a good house in the navamsa, this may indeed be a time when marriage occurs (assuming, of course, that the person is of marriageable age, not already married, and that no other astrological factors strongly hamper the placements in the birth chart or the navamsa.)

3. The Evolutionary Approach.

In addition to assessing, using Western or Vedic techniques, the likelihood of successful relationship for the present time, it is necessary to evaluate the lifelong relationship patterns as indicated both in the natal chart (and navamsa) and by the sequence of transits/progressions or dasas/bhuktis that each person has gone through.

A person with very difficult relationship patterns in their birth chart and/or sequence of cycles subsequent to birth will have a much different approach to relationship than a person born with easy relationship configurations who has had smooth sailing up to now.

And the two are less likely to be compatible, because their experiences have differed so much.

It is similar to the relationship problems that arise when one person has been severely abused in childhood and the other loved and sheltered. The latter person may not understand the needs of the former, or the former person may have a rough time getting close to the latter person.

That said, with commitment, clear communication, perhaps therapy, and reasonably good timing, many relationships can work well.

It is important not to be fatalistic, nor to take astrological indications as the ultimate authority, but to also be aware of the impact of timing on the success of relationships."
