While reading through a pretty good book on astrology it was noticed that the author didn't get into the houses at all! It's quite a comprehensive book in every other regard, it covers transits and lots of astronomy too. Is it common to not use the houses?IP: Logged |

Most people live in accordance with Koch and Placidus house systems (those who affect their environment live in Koch system, those who are affected by the environment should use Placidus). I have read that house system that would be true for the given chart depends on a person's spiritual development. Eventually people can outgrow the house system they live in accordance with at the moment and move to the systems for more evolved. Yogi and spiritual leaders live beyond any house systems and actually are control of their charts. Since spiritaully evolved people are quite rare, astrologers usually use Placidus or Koch system. At first I used Koch but it did not work for me so now I use Placidus. Some astrologers say that planets in signs and aspects themselves give enough info for complete and accurate readings. So I think the author may be one of those astrologers ------------------ It all depends on how we look at things, and not how they are in themselves. Carl G. Jung IP: Logged |

Houses give context to the meanings of the planets and their aspects. I can't imagine why they weren't used. No compenent astrologer would disregard houses, particularly in transits, because they are the keys to understanding transits.I suggest you try a better book. Lanny IP: Logged |

What was the name of this book and who wrote it?Most of the time when considering my chart I find the houses to be more meaningful than the signs, but maybe I'm just one of those less evolved ones This sounds like it could be helpful for trying to get as much information as possible from a chart when the house placements aren't known (e.g. birth-time unavailable). aww, no need to get offended, it is just what I read in the book! I am Placidus-house-type myself! By spiritually evolved they must mean saints, magicians, people like Buddha, Christ etc ------------------ It all depends on how we look at things, and not how they are in themselves. Carl G. Peri, No worries, I wasn't offended... I'm happy to look at house placements while I learn more about life & evolve a little each day IP: Logged |

This is very interesting, Peri, I have never heard of it before. How can you ultimately make this decision? I only recently looked into Koch and found that I identify well with it- but I also identify with my Placidus placements. Can you recommend any good literature on the topic of house sysems? Lemingtyne,The book is online and you can read it for free. Its called "Living in Time" by Palden Jenkins and it is by far the best astro book I have picked up yet. It seems that perhaps Palden is more interested in planetary aspects. It never occured to me that you could disregard the houses. the book starts here... http://www.isleofavalon.co.uk/time.html IP: Logged |

Peri: Interesting comments about the house systems... Any links to info on what houses seem to fit what types of people?I notice that for most people I know, Koch is a perfect fit, but for others, Placidus seems to work better... IP: Logged |

I read about different house systems in the books by Pavel Globa ('Rectification Basics', 'Astrological Calculations. House systems: Koch, Placidus, Jamasp'), a Russian astrologer who founded the Avestan School of Astrology here. I don’t know whether any of his books are translated into English. ------------------ It all depends on how we look at things, and not how they are in themselves. Carl G. Jung IP: Logged |

beebuddy, thanks for the link! I started reading it & it feels like deja-vu. Have I really read all this before? hmmm...Peri, it is interesting what you say about the house systems... the very first few times I looked at my birth chart it was done with equal houses, and I didn't know much about astrology, but I knew that wasn't me. Once I saw my chart done in the Placidus on astro.com, it made more sense to me and I felt more comfortable reading it. I haven't looked into the Koch system yet, but thanks for planting the idea in my brain.

Houses are particularily important for the external planets, that spend months or years in a sign... Having Saturn in Gemini (like me) means less than having it in the 3rd house. IP: Logged |

PopProducer,"Houses are particularily important for the external planets, that spend months or years in a sign... Having Saturn in Gemini (like me) means less than having it in the 3rd house." This is particularly confusing... first you said that houses are important for the external planets and then you make the point that having Saturn in Gemini is more important than what house it is in. Your point was unclear. IP: Logged |
