How close do the planets have to be to be (thats funny!!!) considered conjuct??

I have the sun at 57' 39"
Pluto at 54' 39"

hey nevill3 - it's:

sun 8*virgo
pluto 17*virgo
mercury 0*virgo

your mercury and sun are conjunct, and your sun and pluto are conjunct, but your mercury and pluto are not conjunct. it's about 8* - 10* for conjunction. i use 8* but sometimes for the personal planets i'll stretch it to 10*.

check out these examples of conjunctions in your chart:

mercury 0*virgo conj venus 21*leo (10* orb)

mars 4*leo conj jupiter 25*cancer (9* orb)

------------------
~Libra Sun / 29* Gemini Rising / Aquarius Moon~

Many thanks Hexxie That explains it a little (the 8-10 orb) I usually start reading on the astro dienst site but after clicking their clickable chart half a dozen times my head is spinning with conjuct sextile opposite this and that.....

I suppose it gets easier the more you do it, so more practice required.

Thanks again Nev.

The separation between planets is called the orb, and different astrologers deifine aspects according to different orbs. For instance I think astro.com considers an orb until 7° a conjuction while others won't consider it a conjunction if the orb is more than 4°.

And yes, big houses 6 and 12...

The sign/ house is irrelevant. if the orb is less than 6° (or the amount of degrees you consider for an aspect).

I started out using a 10° orb for conjunctions and oppositions. Now smaller orbs seem to work better. In my natal chart Uranus and Venus are more than 9° apart. They are also in separate signs and separate houses. They never felt conjunct to me.
I'd read on these boards somewhere that some astrologers don't consider planets to be conjunct no matter the orb if they are not in either the same sign or the same house (don't remember which). Anyone know the specifics of this school of thought?
Thanks,
Lemingtyne

Hey! I personally keep my orb much tighter than the really wide ones you are using. The influences are more defined when you are not spreading it out so thin. (Although, if it 'feels' like an aspect, it IS aspecting-even if further away than 3 degrees!!) Possibly consider trimming your numbers back a bit..it will help with your focus!

Here is a link and article from Noel Tyl which I think you will find helpful.
