quote:
When or if alone, you will, apart from anything else, have your alter ego for company. And this is the clue as to why you are alone: you are disinclined to allow an Other [a partner] to see the side of your nature which is the, 'Dark Twin,' that is, the one who you assumed would not be accepted by Other. What characterizes this dark twin you may know in your heart, and it could be described somewhere in these pages under the influence of some planet. But whatever it is like, let it out so that it might grow to be seen, known, loved, and transformed. -The Instant Astrologer by Lyn Birkbeck

This is just one paragraph from the Gemini Rising description.

I don't really see a 'Dark Twin' at this point in my life. The most secret parts of my life are being here with you guys, and some of the dreams and aspirations I have. With regard to astrology, I've let that slip out into my interactions with lots of other people including people who I think would judge it.

I suppose the things I reveal in this forum could be my more secret side, but I don't see that as a 'dark' thing.

Any opinions?

This makes a lot of sense to me. I think the aspect that my Gem asc pics up on..is Venus (11th) opp Pluto (5th) - my only opposition involving planets.. The way people know me, the way I am in general to the world at large is almost 100% different to the 5th - romance..sexuality.. And I could almost call it an "evil twin". It isn't evil but it does seem dark and plutonian..

My south node is there as well..so I definitely think I have to get away from that kind of intensity and be more like my goody goody two shoes twin lol

My bf is the only person who has seen and knows both "twins" really well..so I guess I did let it out, like that interpretation says I should.. but only with him.

I am not quite sure what you are saying but I have a good Gemini friend. He is my alter ego, but in a complementary way- as in butterly vs. moth, sun vs. moon, do you get what I'm saying? We're similar in very dissimilar ways- its hard to explain. Whenever he vanishes out of a crowd to associate with a single person it is usually me, and I think its because he helps me see through my haze, and vice versa. I definitely see a 'twin' relationship between us, and he often refers to me as a brother.

I think perhaps this "dark twin" is an side of one's sense of self that isn't well illmuniated (like Jung's notion of a shadow self) and thus lacks in development. the consciousness; acknowledgement and proper intergration with the individual's overall ego and sense of self. This wouldn't be the same thing as something negative or evil.

As a gemini Sun, I can relate to there being a side of me that i don't feel would be accpeted by others, even on intimate terms, and so it doesn't get expressed often adn thus is not as well developed or integrated into my overall self. This side of myself related deeply to my creative self, and my difficulty in expressing it often inhibits me in my creative pursuit and in my self-confidence.

I now that this "dark side" of myself (and by "dark" I mean "hidden" and not "evil") is difficult for me to express due to my upbringing, where my creative talents and aspiratiosn were either not nutured or condemned by the adult I grew up around. This kind of psychological damage is common in many Geminis because we tend to be precocious so either adults neglect our lead for nuturing and guidence, thinking we can do it all on our own, or they resent that precociousness and try to berate, dismiss, or belittel the young Gemini to the point he Gemini feels inihbited.

Have one on me!!

Seriously I do agree with having this hidden sense of self that I don't let a lot of people see...especially in regards to letting people know that I practice astrology or I have an extreemly twisted sense of humor or maybe that I really don't care as much as people sometimes think. I have a very hard time being vulnerable but this maybe from having too many planets in Aries...but if you look on the bright side, I think people with Gemini risings and suns never have to worry about feeling so along since there's always that twin/dark side to them.

I know I definitey present the "sunny side of the street" facade and I have for most of my life. Truth is I am a loner and I really have a so-called dark side myself. It isn't happy and sunny, but very much understanding how painful, challenging and tragic life can be and there are moments when I truly despair.

I'm not afraid of it and I accept it as part of my personality, but I don't show it much because it tends to scare ppl when I
get that way.

I can definitely relate to having a hidden "twin" that I don't show to the world. I tend to let my serious, smart, quiet side show in my everyday interactions. I somehow fear my silly, goofy, kiddie side would be ridiculed. I've shown that side to my aqua ex but not even my famliy seen that side of me. I let it slip around my best friend once and she was shocked and amused, however I didn't like the attention and the teasing. When I'm alone I'm never bored with my silly twin.

sun in the 12th house, mercury in gemini, and pas fortunae(however the f*ck u spell it) in gemini at the 29th degree.

------------------
Gemini sun, Cancer rising, mercury in Gemini, moon in Taurus *29, venus in Taurus, mars in Libra

Come to think of it now..I think there are a lot more sides to Gemini (and Pisces..or people with prominent Neptune and/or Mercury)

I have my happy bubbly side, my serious introverted side, my intense side, my calm side, my angry side, my loving side, my cold side, my intelligent side, my dumb side, my talkative side, my quiet side, my sensitive side, my tough side..

Which side(s) I show anyone at any particular time depends a lot on who they are, the way they act towards me, what vibes I get on first impressions ..and the situation I am in. For instance the way I act around certain relatives is completely different to the way I act around my close friends, which again is very different to the way I act at uni towards teachers in that context.. If I had to attend a gathering where all these people would get together I’d feel so confused. I think I’d probably stay quiet, because I’d have no idea how to act to keep everyone happy lol

Aqua, yep I agree. I think everyone has many facets to their personality.. but with prominent Gem and/or Pisces.. the need to "act" and play different parts is accentuated I think..

That's interesting SweetCappie.. With strangers I usually feel exactly the reverse of what you feel. I show my silly goofy side and hide my serious side. I often get the feeling my serious side would scare people..or that it would make them uncomfortable.

Wow. I didn't even know I got on that night. I'm a little embarrassed about that.

Anyway, I do have the exact same tendency as SweetCappie. For being a Gemini Rising, I'm pretty serious most of the time. However, I do let my silly side slip in here and there, and certainly expose it more online. They say people are really honest when they're intoxicated as well, and I become a hilarious, but respectful flirt when I'm drinking.

What's interesting, though, is that Caps are supposed to get younger and looser as they get older, so that's supposed to be part of our natural progression.

I also related to the creativity issue GemNymph talked about. My first artistic obsession was pretty much shot down by my mother. Music came along, and that was a more accepted, but still not encouraged in the way I would think it should be.

(I've got an Aries dad and Leo Mom)

I am a gem sun/mars/ascendant. I defintely have a "dark side" to me. And no not evil , but a would say darker. I can always tell when it hits too, because I feel completely different. On one side I have a very outgoing and social side, but other times I just want to crawl into a whole and be by myself, but not in a depressive way, but I can be very introverted at times.

I was luckly raised by a Gemini mother and aunt, who always supported my art and music (even though my mom has not one artistic bone in her body, hehe), but also i was moved around alot and kinda handed off to different family memebers , so sometimes i think my "dark side" stems from those times when I was a child I had to be very self reliant for company, because when you move constantly as a child I guess it can be good to be a gemini so at least you have you twin with you.

I normaly suppose I have cancer rising in the first few degrees, but because I don't know exactly my birth time recently I suspected it could be in the late degree of gemini for different reasons, like: I had more than one marriage, both abroad, both with foreigners (if would be sagittarius in 7th rather than capricorn!)so until I will have the chance to try to recalculated properly by somebody more experienced I consider myself some mixed between cancer and gemini rising with both influences.

I read your posts and I do agree with having alter ego for company so much!!! But I didn't think to analize this aspect before!

Since childhood because I was only child and feeling lonely I used to consider I was playing with an imaginary friend even considering sometime beeing my sister, gave her a name as well! But I think most of the children at one point used to play like this, only that I keep somehow this feeling of an imaginary person around me even in this age. Talking in my mind with her, "consulting" her about different things I want to do and how would be happen, or tell her about some important thing which was already happened and if I am alone even I am talking to her!!! Is my very best friend ever! I never said this thing to anybody before because I fear to don't be considered nuts or would be ridiculed!
And of course "she" knows me best! Generally I show more easily my quiet and serious side to everybody and I have difficulty in expresing my full-deep self to others, of course the nearest and dearest few friends know me better than others, but even my own parents are far from knowing me that close. Because they inhibited me alot in childhood, maybe without realizing so and like others said here about creative talents as well mine(like drawing)wasn't respected and helped to develop further which I wished to.

But I do also consider this "dark" side more "hidden" not at all "evil" and I am really enjoing when I am alone for a while because I'm never bored with "her".

And maybe to gemini or gemini rising the alter ego is more emphasized because I don't have any other gemini panet or cusp not other planet in air sign.

AcousticGod -

Although that quote does not speak to you, I find it to be a great insight.

The Gemini "Twins" are still, for the most part, a mystery to most of us. Finding good material on just that is difficult. But whenever I've read stuff about the good/bad, it seems to be closer to the truth. Afterall, the two Pisces' "Fishes" are well understood by most.

I DO believe in the "dark" side of Gemini's. Every Sign has a dark Sign, but more importantly, how that dark side manifests.

Here's some Gemini's who have shown their dark side, and may even be well known for it :::

Angelina Jolie
Johnny Depp
Marilyn Monroe
Elizabeth Hurley
Bob Dylan
Jeffrey Dahmer
Tupac Shakur
Brooke Shields
Prince
Noel Gallagher
Dave Navarro
Mark Wahlberg
Anne Heche

...just to name a few
