I'm just trying to get my atrological bearings correct and need some help trying to figure out what the significance of aspect by sign is. Say, a Scorpio sun and a Pisces sun, would they be considered to be trine by sign even if they were not trine by degrees apart? If so how would you compare the effects of the two? Is one effect more noticeable more noticeable than the other? thanks!

The aspect by sign is also called 'aspect by association'.

yes, this is true for all major aspects not only trine.

The tighter the orb the stronger/more noticeable the aspect's influence is.

I think, aspects by association are too general to take them into consideration; but when I do synastry readings where luminaries, for example, make no aspects by degree, aspects by sign come in very handy.

Aspects by sign give you a general picture, aspects by degree give you a more in-depth understanding.
