I have venus in 12th house (scorpio) and it is conjunct to neptune and ascend. and sextile to uranus.

I read some rather bleak and depressing things about venus in the 12th house, etc and wondered if anyone could shed some light on it for me.

Let's take a look at this in two parts:
Scorpio modifying Venus in 12th house conjunct Neptune conjunct Ascendant
and
Scorpio modifying Venus in 12th house conjunct Neptune conjunct Ascendant sextile Uranus

Scorpio modifying Venus (relationships - Venus in sign of its detriment - challenging energy) focused in the 12th house (Venus in house of its exaltation - very easy energy) conjunct (energy is combined with) Neptune (spirituality, also confusion - Neptune in the house of its rulership - easy energy) conjunct Ascendant (self)

Whew!

Let's stop there and take a look at that much. You have Venus energy BOTH challenged and very easy, indicating that there is a certain "challenging/easy" energy to relationships. Also this is a "spiritual" Venus, so the "relationships", in general, are with "all sentient beings" (as Buddhism puts it) rather than with any one in particular. This is all very PERSONAL to you, since all this energy conjuncts your Asendant.

Now, ALL this energy described above is sextile (energy goes easily with) Uranus (friends). This is even more "impersonal, friendly, spiritual" connections to those around you. The result could be a feeling of being deeply connected to...everyone!

Add to all this that Scorpio energy has to do with "other people's values" and the Scorpio challenge becomes a little clearer: you may tend to identify VERY strongly with other people's values...but have questions about what your OWN values are. It may help to understand that your own values are intertwined with other people's values, so in connecting with those around you, you help grow and develop yourself.

Sounds confusing? That's because it is! But it is YOUR confusion and your ability to sort through this spiritual confusion that is your strength.
