I keep reading in Astrology books about affictions. Phrases like 'If the Sun is not afficted...' or 'if there are no planetary affictions in the chart...'. Does this refer to oppositions and square aspects in ones chart? The books that I'm reading seem to assume that you, the reader, already know what 'an affliction' means. Or is there another explanation?

"Affliction" is a term that most modern astrologers would not use. Historically, astrologers were largely deterministic or fatalistic and regarded all "negative" aspects, especially squares and oppositions, as a "cross to bear". Today, with greater knowledge of psychology and metaphysics, we look at them more as challenges to overcome, lessons to learn, or even something that serves some other purpose for us.

With many others, I believe that we choose our charts before entering this life. In doing so, we always have a goal in mind which involves the growth of ourselves and/or others. As we overcome challenges, we grow and we also become a living example for others of what can be overcome and how to do it.

Okay... thanks,

So if two moons are square in a composite chart that means... the couple will not get along very well, or it would take alot for them to get along... or would it mean that they will need a lot of tolorance to get along... or all of the above. I imagine, all of the above, since that is my situation and I'm familiar with it. BUT... can it work?

Beowulf,

Moons squaring in a synastry just means the two people's emotional responses are not in sync with each other. Most obviously, that would be one person being in a good mood while the other is not. And there comes the difficulty of the aspect, that there will be relatively fewer times when the two will be in "compatible" moods allowing them to relate emotionally.

It can work because this will be seen as being an internal problem for each of the people involved, so they won't blame each other and there'll actually be an understanding of the issue. It'd just take some extra patience to get there.

an affliction will also include a planet in its fall or detriment or in the house of its fall or its detriment.
