midpoints are very important in many ways - synastry, transits to (midpoints), progressions, solar arcs to (midpoints). first see if you have natal planets on midpoints. for example, if your pluto lands on your sun/moon midpoint, you'll have a scorpionic dimension to emotional expression and personality.

you can use the hard aspects, meaning, your pluto does not have to conjunct your sun/moon midpoint to be in relationship with su/mo. it can be square, opposed, sesquiquadrate, or semisquare. noel tyl accepts the quindecile as well (165°).
you have to understand the energy of the two planets combined to figure the meaning of each midpoint. this is what the term "planetary pairs" means - the energy of combined planets. the term "midpoint pictures" is also used.
midpoints are highly important in progressions and solar arcs. the orb would be 1 degree. i think some accept up to 2°.
for instance, i have a tight sun-pluto opposition, and my moon squares both. (this means i have a t-square, natch.) anyway, because of this configuration, my MOON falls conjunct the sun-pluto midpoint. "The Moon as a midpoint of the Sun and Pluto indicates an extreme supression of feelings which must be brought under control". this is very true of me! do you see how merging the energies of the 2 planets involved in the midpoint gives you the general meaning? here, we're talking about the sun-pluto midpoint: combining the 2 energies would mean this midpoint illustrates the need for control, illumination of power needs. with the moon on this point, the emotional life is tied very strongly into that need for control. does this make sense?
i'll give another example of a midpoint picture, i have uranus conjunct the ascendant at 12 libra, and my mercury sits on the descendant at 11 aries. this means my mercury OPPOSES my uranus-AC midpoint. this is written mercury=uranus/AC. "Mercury aspecting the midpoint of Uranus and the Ascendant indicates organizing and inventive ability and a good mind that comprehends quickly. However, too critical of others." ohhh, so true, that.
i could go on, but ill stop there and give an example in synastry...in my last relationship, my partner's venus fell smack dab on my moon-pluto midpoint. keyword for the moon-pluto picture? emotional intensity, of course. so HIS venus brings up these issues for me, brings these 2 planetary energies together.
i could also go on about solar arcs to midpoints...ill just give one example, though. i intend to start a new thread sometime soon just on solar arcs, as this is a VERY fascinating faction of predictive astrology, i have found many correlations with arcs and major life events. solar arcs to natal midpoints are what they call indirect arcs. one example i experienced, and i'll have to give a slight bit of background here: last year, in march, i experienced a major break-up out of the blue. my then partner/best friend, who has grappled with asperger's syndrome, OCD, ADD, depression, and agoraphobia for a significant portion of his life, told me he could no longer continue our relationship. this was very upsetting to me, but i accepted his withdrawal. last september was his birthday, and for the 1st time since his disappearance from my life, i attempted to contact him. i made a beautiful little card using collage images of phineas gage (gage suffered an unusual kind of traumatic brain injury in the 1800s and thus became a very famous case for frontal lobe damage) and cut up leaves fashioned in the form of a bird (one of my favorite forms to utilize). on the inside i wrote that i was happy he was born and signed my name. i mailed the card so he would get it on his birthday, and about 2 weeks later i sent a short, friendly e-mail. i waited another week or so and i sent 1 more short note (e-mail). i heard nothing, and the thing is, he got my e-mails because i received notices that he had opened them. his lack of response to the card or to those e-mails at all threw me into a major depression all over again, just as fresh as back in march when he informed me of his decision. at the time this occured, i was experiencing an indirect arc of mars=saturn/pluto. this means mars had arced into hard aspect with my saturn/pluto midpoint. from noel tyl's book on solar arcs (and this astounded me when i saw this): "fighting battles to keep life going; enormous undercurrent of frustration; a gun with a cork in its barrel".
this is AMAZINGLY spot on, so as you can see solar arcs to midpoints really work, though the one thing to keep in mind is that they really sing for only about a month, as opposed to direct arcs which can be active for around a year (activated by transits).
hope this helps,
