I was playing music in the session on Friday night....

There was a woman there I had never met before.....long foxy coloured hair....playing guitar, very enthusiastically...

Anyway she started to sing...oh wow....beautiful voice, a cross between Joni Mithchell and an Irish singer here who I cant remember the name of.

I noticed every time the level of noise increased, she would bash the guitar even more and sing louder....hahaha !!!

I normally sing, but hung back and just carried on playing my fiddle...I was so enjoying listening to her and watching her "perform".

Towards the end of the evening my music teacher called for a song from me....I declined and said "oohhh I couldnt follow that"....but he and a couple of other guys kept on so I did....very nervously....no instruments, just naked singing...room silent...oh god.

I couldnt help notice that the guitar woman walked off when I sang.

At the end of the evening I went up to her and congratulated her on such a wonderful talent. I then leaned over and said "I hope you dont mind me asking, but are you a "Leo"......and in a very strong, almost indignant voice she replied "WELL OF COURSE I AM"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.......

Gotta love them Leos....

She was NOT being indignant!
She is a LEO!
Proud to be one!
Probably Glad you noticed!
She knew her singing was/is great!
She had/has reason to be calmly proud!

And she also had the Leonine dignity to walk off....
so YOU could have the spotlight all to yourself!

Probably getting herself a beer or something.
Probably needed a break after belting it out, her songs!

THAT was showing RESPECT for another performer!

Having a few close Leo friends...
That is what I believe.

Also...you never met her before. She could probably tell you were a regular and knew alot of folks and probably felt a little nervous being a stranger there.

In Ireland it is respectful to sit and listen to the person performing...

It is considered very rude to walk away.

People only go to the bar between songs...

That is a part of the tradition here....to be ever present...

To listen.

I haven't been to LL in a long time so I was catching up on all the posts.

Sue, I couldn't help but notice that in your reply to Fayte you contradicted yourself in what you stated in your original post.

You stated that it is the tradition of the people in Ireland to sit and listen to a performer...to be respectful. Yet in your original post you stated that while this Leo woman was performing there was a lot of noise in the bar, so much so that the woman was forced to play louder as the noise level increased. Now that does not sound to me like the people were just sitting and listening and being respectful while the woman performed as you stated is the Irish tradition.

Sorry but I couldn't help but take note of the obvious contradiction.

If people were not being respectful while this woman performed as you clearly stated in the original post, then my question is how was she being disrespectful of you if she just went to get a beer.

Also, I have to agree with Fayte, you did not know the woman so perhaps it is possible that you were interpreting her words and actions to mean what you either wanted them to mean or what you just perceived them to mean. We all do that from time to time.

Mirandee!Hello!
Sue....
Mirandee made some valid points....
I was wondering about this also:
Quote:
"I noticed every time the level of noise increased, she would bash the guitar even more and sing louder....hahaha !!!"
First..why the hahaha?
The woman was a stranger. No one was showing her quite "silent" respect as they Did show to you...
Quote:
"Towards the end of the evening my music teacher called for a song from me....I declined and said "oohhh I couldnt follow that"....but he and a couple of other guys kept on so I did....very nervously....no instruments, just naked singing...
room silent...oh god."
SILENT...giving you respect!
But to hahaha...about her HAVING to sing and bang louder to get past the noise!
And did she make you feel inferior/intimidated?
Quote:
I declined and said "oohhh I couldnt follow that"
Then you said:
"Towards the end of the evening...."
and:
"I couldnt help notice that the guitar woman walked off when I sang."
and:
"I then 'leaned over' and said...."
It was getting late...she was tired.
Maybe she had to use the bathroom..."late in the evening"...."walked off" and beer will do that!
And..she was obviously already "SITTING down" listening, and later for you to be able to "lean over her...."
I just feel you were too harsh in your judgement of this stranger who was not treated with the same Silence and Respect You were given.
Just my opinion.
That was unfair to Leos.
And rude to a stranger.

The "disrespectful" ones.....were drunken people who were so consumed with alcohol they were unaware of the din they were making.

The non drunken ones understand the respect thing.

The musicians dont get drunk.....they pay respect to each other.....they would say "sshh sshhh....aaahhh come on lads, a bit of quiet please"

And so do the non drunken ones who observe, watch and remember the laws of sean nos.

Its an Irish thing....you would have to be here to understand it.

So sorry if I was misleading in my description......

The Leo woman I speak of left Ireland for a while to dwell in another land.....so maye along the way she forgot her culture.....the sean nos.....

Maybe.....she just didnt like another woman singing.....?

Who knows....?

I was just observing...just my perception....nobody elses...

Ok...but why did everyone go polite and silent for your singing but not hers?

I mean...later in the evening the rude drunks would have been even more rowdy.

Yet it was "silent" for your solo but not her performance.

Maybe that made her feel upset at everyone because she did feel that no one was giving any respect to her, and made alot of noise, but then treated you with respectful silence.

Anyone would be upset by that.

Wow...and I thought we were so conservative here in the states (or at least that is what I keep getting told).

In the US (at Irish pubs frequented by a large Irish population - meaning from Ireland orginally and in everyday bars) we dance, sing, drink and laugh while people are playing up on stage. If it is a quiet song, then people will get quiet to listen.

Here singers may drink or not, it's their choice.

It would be considered incredibly rude for a performer to remain on stage while another performer is coming on for their act. That is a sign of major disrespect.

I also find it weird that everyone was quiet and respectful for YOU but not for her.. then again, that may be because you were singing a capella and she was singing with a band (?) I am assuming this because you said something about normally you would sing but instead you hung back and played your fiddle. I am also assuming you were part of her back up and not competing with her as she sang.

It seems to me that she handled herself and the crowd quiet well. It can't be easy to sing above a crowd that is noisy as all heck. No wonder she needed to use the restroom and have a beer

Hmmmmm, I'm married to an Irish man and for that reason it's hard to imagine an Irish bar where everyone wasn't tanked up. The Irish do love their lager don't they?
Which is okay because American bars are the same way.

Just curious, but did you or any of the other "non-drunk" and "respectful" people in the bar attempt to silence the drunken ones? If so then why as Fayte pointed out did you find it funny that she had to play and sing louder to be heard? That was a good question.

Also, why were the drunken ones in the room suddenly silent as you sang if, as you stated, they were "too drunk to notice they were being loud?"

It just seemed to me that there was some kind of deep issue here that you have with Leos or maybe other women that you see to be competition???? I don't know you so maybe that is just my perception. But your post seemed to be kind of self-promoting, comparing yourself to this woman who was a stranger and just doing her thing as you were doing your thing.

It kind of seemed to me that you took a whole lot more notice of her than she did you. You said you were very nervous when prompted by others to sing and yet even in your state of nervousness you noticed this woman did not stay to see you perform. If I were in front of a group of people singing and nervous as you said you were I wouldn't even have noticed the woman left.

wait a minute sue g;

in my culture it is true..like your behaviour...it is respet ;to listen singer as quiet..especially in live music(not band)

and there was band (i mean no singer-only in disco and bar-people goes to have beer..)

i understand you...sometimes people get annoyed not respect or not be self -sentered..if they are leo this is too...so ;this behind the lioness..if she is another sign;again disrespect or not self-centered meaning..even if she is leo;she must learn how to behave...(like other signs as well)

so please dont sorry...dot use such words..

take care sue g..

We must have crossed posts ladies.

Hello to you, Pidua. Thanks for the welcome back and it's good to see you again on the threads.

We are not victimizing you, Sue. It's just that your little story here kind of put down a whole lot of Leo women ( which I am not one of incidently ) so it was not just an innocent little story.

I feel that all signs have their strong and weak points and dislike it when people use astrology to point out the weaknesses in other signs and only point out the strengths of their own signs. It seemed to me that you were doing this here which is what I meant by "self-promoting."

I agree with Pidua. I admire the woman for continuing on with her performance when she might have just gotten insulted by the rudeness and walked off stage. And there was really nothing funny about people being rude to her.

So defensive, Sue

We crossed posts again. I stated we are not victimizing you so there is really no need to play the victim.

No, I am not a shrink. I am just perceptive of people. I do not, however, pretend to know your intentions. I only know what you said in your post and sorry, but it seemed very "self-promoting" to me. As does the comment "contrary to popular belief" regarding your perfection. Whose popular belief? Yours or everyone elses because I have not heard anything about this "popular belief." Must not have made it "across the pond" yet. hahahahaha

Hmmmmm......

Self-promoting?

Maybe.....will think about that one....

And we dont have stages.....we sit around in a small pub almost like someone's front rooms....very informal, modest and humble.

Its almost as though time has stood still in parts of Ireland.....and the traditons have been kept in tact.

Okay maybe in the future I will be careful of what I am saying about the signs.......after all do I have room to comment....being a sting in the tail...

why are you picking on SueG? what a bitchy ### thing to do, there was no point in doing that, what purpose did it serve ? maybe what she wrote was wrong, but trying to taint her like that on a message board is wrong- OH WOW SOMEONE JUDGED SOMEONE BY THEIR SIGN, HOW IRONIC, thats what people interested in astrology do, we do judge and to pretend we dont see "virgo, cancer, leo, whatever" in a person is ridicious and theres NO point of being on this board. Leave SueG alone- I just wanted to smack you for being so mean- its like you were just looking to provoke an argument because youre having a sh-t day..or it makes you feel better to put people down..probably the latter..Im not going to respond to a response, so dont bother- I just had to defend SueG- usually I wouldnt bother with this sort of post- but something about your posts got under my skin-

adios.
