Can someone explain the literal and and esoteric meaning of the term 'combust'? I have read that due to the intense 'solarity' i.e. heat from the sun; weakens the planet in close orb. I admit to not having a firm grasp of the concept. Having a Taurus Sun [5*] combust chart ruler Venus [8*] 9thH. According to traditional astrology this overshadows the applicable Venusian traits. Disables them. It sounds as if I am answering my own question....I am not. I am only relating what I have read, and do not fully understand. IP: Logged |

Node, my Mercury is combust, in 15 degrees Leo, same degree as my sun. It's completely fused with my sun, so much so that I cannot distinguish my Mercury energy from my sun's energy. This is said to disable the planet's energies, but if my mercury were disabled, then I wouldn't be able to form a thought, much less type it out here, would I? Often, people who have a planet close to their sun, display traits associated with the sign that the particular planet rules. Pluto conjunct sun people seem like Scorpios. Uranus conj. sun seems Aquarian, and so forth. Not sure what my point is here, other than to say, I wouldn't worry too much about the concept of a planet being "disabled" by being too close to the sun. I just don't see that as being true in my observations. If anything, that planet is "spot-lighted" by being so close to the sun. IP: Logged |

So, they say that when a planet is so close to the sun, it's at a disadvantage because it's behind the sun, and it's rays can't reach earth. BUT - the sun's rays BLAST down to earth, it's riding on the sun's coat-tails, so I think it's energy certainly still reaches out, but it's doing so by piggy-backing the sun. We roll out the red carpet for the sun's energy, and whatever other energy it's bringing with it. Just not buying this negative spin on so called "combust" planets. I still think they're spot lighted by this circumstance. IP: Logged |

Lioneye - So instead of 'overshadowing' that tight planet you say that the sun is 'highlighting' it? I tend to agree. Even with the physical properties, as opposed to our romantisized vison of the Sun. The time, space, and distance are not burning it up. [so to speak] The close proximity, and in my case Sun/taurus/venus/taurus increases it's importance in the chart. It's a HOT SPOT for me alright IP: Logged |

Hi, guys, I was under the impression that this expression was only in reference to horary astrology. When the significator of the querent (person asking question) or quesited (person or thing being asked about) were too close to the sun, the power of the planet was destroyed by the sun, overshadowed.I don't necessarily think that is the case in natal astrology. For example, having Venus/Sun conjunct I see as a very positive aspect. With the Sun having a brightening effect on Venus and Venus having a loving effect on the Sun. IP: Logged |

I have Pluto conj Sun too! A 1* orb ------------------ `Who are you?' said the Caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, `I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.' ~Lewis Carroll IP: Logged | |
