I read an interesting theory.

There was not always a 13th sign in the Zodiac [Mazzaroth]. About 2000 years ago the Sun traveled from the constellation Scorpius and then went directly into the sign of Sagittarius, but due to the constant motion of the cosmos, the Sun now enters, for a few days of the year, the star constellation 'Ophiuchus' before entering Sagittarius from Scorpius, thus creating Astrologically the birth of a thirteenth sign of the Zodiac, which is named: Ophiuchus the 'man' Serpent Holder, patterned from the original 'Serpent Holder', Enki, a Sumerian god.

The signs of the Zodiac are for the most part, the highway, or path, on which the Sun takes on it's yearly journey across the heavens - as it would appear to Earthlings. These signs are actually star constellations occupying space in which the Sun appears to travels in an earth year. The original twelve signs/constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces are quite familiar to everyone, however, the thirteenth sign/constellation, [Ophiuchus], is in fact, not well known. To acknowledge a 13th sign now would seem awkward for astrologers, who like the tidiness of '12 signs' that rule over the 12 houses of the Zodiac. But like it or not the heavens are alive and they do change after a few thousand years and the astrologer who wants to maintain accuracy must change along with the signs in the heavens.

The constellation of Ophiuchus is the only sign of the Zodiac which is linked to a real man. This man lived in ancient Egypt around the 27th century BCE, and his name was Imhotep [patterned after Enki]. Many of the same attributes of Imhotep can also be found in the Biblical Hebrew man Joseph, son of Jacob - [see comparison chart for these two men in separate article]. Imhotep is credited with many accomplishments including the knowledge and use of medicine. It is said of Imhotep that he brought the art of healing to mankind. The symbol of a serpent [or snake], which is still widely used today to represent the medical profession, was used to represent Imhotep. Imhotep was also known as 'Aesclepius' to the ancient Greeks, but by any name the attributes are still all the same. The attributes listed below describe Imhotep, i.e. the Hebrew Joseph, or Aesclepius. The keyword descriptions seen below, originated with Betty Rhodes, and are the attributes for the 13th sign of the Zodiac - Ophiuchus:

I know about that stuff. I am well aware that the constellation zodiac signs aren't an equal 30 degrees including Virgo being the largest and Scorpio being the smallest constellation. I am aware that Ophiuchus is part of the constellation zodiac.

I was born on October 29th,and I am well aware that my Sun is actually in the constellation of Virgo even though it's in Scorpio in tropical zodiac and Libra in sidereal zodiac. Spica, the alpha star of Virgo, is my heliacal rising star.

However, tropical zodiac has nothing to do with the constellations. They are based on the equinoxes and solstices.

Sun in Aries is the vernal equinox, and that is beginning of Spring.

Sun in Cancer is the summer solstice, and that is beginning of Summer.

Sun in Libra is the autumnal equinox, and that is beginning of Fall.

Sun in Capricorn is the winter solstice, and that is the beginning of Winter.

That has nothing to do with stars in the sky.

However, this doesn't account for the southern hemisphere.

I wonder if the zodiac placements are actually reversed for people in southern hemisphere.

I don't like the 13th sign for symetrical/mathematical reasons. With 12 everything is even: 4 elements, 3 modes, 3 signs in each element, etc. You couldn't have this balance with 13.

Glaucus is probably right, the tropical zodiac has nothing to do with the positions of the constellations...I read that somewhere, I just don't remember where. This thirteenth "sign" is not really news, there are actually other constellations that the sun supposedly goes through as well.
