I was wondering what is considered the greater influence.....The houses that planets are placed in or the signs that the planets are in; or is it equal?

For example.... Mars and Venus in gemini in the 8th house. Is that person likely to be conflicted about wanting a deep and intimate connection with someone and also feeling they want a variety of partners and experiences? Has anyone got similar placements? Or know someone who has?

Thanks guys : )

welcome zephyr1970!

I believe both are important, some might not agree though. It's like compatibility between sun signs.People ask why scorpios are not compatible with leos or aquas but it's far more than sun signs involved in a relationship. So i'd say that the whole chart is important both in natal interpretation and synastry.

PS:excuse my lack of logic in this post, i haven't had my morning coffee yet.

In my opinion they're both important, however, I see houses a bit of a greater influence because two or three or four people can be born in the same place on the same day, but if they all have different ascendants, most likely their personalities and lifestyles will vary greatly. Thats what I think at least, correct me if I'm wrong.

However, when you're interpreting a chart...like you used Mars/Venus in Gemini, 8th house

I see them as equally important. Signs are the How, Houses are the where.

The sign would be HOW you experience the energy and the house would be WHERE [youd also include aspects to get a more accurate picture].

For example my Moon is in Cap so Im very guarded with my feelings, very practical, like a good deal etc and its in the 6th house - so all this manifests in my day-to-day life: Im a vegetarian mostly because its less expensive and faster to cook, Im sadly very very up to date with housekeeping to the point where I cant feel "at peace" unless every bit is picked up, very picky about where I sleep, eat, how clean the restaurant is etc., I regligiously attack sales. I also develop good working [6th house] relationships with older [capricorn] women [moon].

Its all a combination. For mars venus gem in 8th I would say that the persons sexuality is very fluid and in need of good communication to get them going. Theyd be very loving and romantic in sex [venus] but theyd also display aggressive qualities [mars] at certain points, with a certain ability to be detached [gemini], maybe theyd like a lot of phone sex. Also apparently mars in a house is where you prefer to have sex, or the circumstances you like so maybe theyd be very turned on after having a "deep" conversation, or it so happens after theres a death the sexuality would get turned on, something related to death, maybe having sex in a graveyard. Im just playing around with the associations. These are 8th house things: psychology, death. Youd have to add everything up but ingeneral thats my impression of that placement in the chart.

According to the Avestan and some other schools, sign placements i.e. the cosmogramme, on a general level is much more important than house placements i.e. the horoscope because there are several house systems and the native may shift from one into another during his/her life; Houses also change when the native relocates thus the cosmogramme is constant, the horoscope is variable; I find this theory quite convincing but if the native lives an ordinary, usual life (with no dramatic changes) and does not relocate very far from his/her place of birth then houses are as much important as signs.

I agree with almost everything here

but I do believe that house placements are more important because I feel that they are more personal.
for instance, generational planets in signs have a generational influence. generational planets in signs have an individual influence. I feel that applies to all the planets. I feel that would be logical conclusion.Moon,Sun,Mercury,Venus,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune,Pluto
in house placements would be more important than Moon,Sun,Mercury,Venus,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn, and Uranus in sign placements.

I see signs as the costumes that actors where. I see houses as the stages that actors perform on.

Why does one have to be more important than the other?
I guess the house placement can be seen as the more personal one, but I wouldn't say it's more important. At least when it comes to personal planets.
For example if you're trying to figure out what kind of person I am as a partner, my venus sign (and aspects) will probably tell you more than the house placement. The planets in houses on the other hand would help you to interpret my orientations in life a bit better.

I think that can be all about semantics. People tend to differ in what important means to them.

I kinda view it as...well...the address is more important information than my city. My home address is very personal, and it's sensitive information that I wouldn't give out to anybody or they would know me more while city is more generational. There are so many people in the city, and so it would difficult to track me down if a person only knows my city.

I agree to disagree with any differing views to avoid debate which I always find stressful and so I am very poor at. It's taxing to my nervous system..especially when I am mainly visual thinker and not verbal thinker..so I am not quick to come up with words like most people.

"I see signs as the costumes that actors where. I see houses as the stages that actors perform on." -> nice said Glaucus~ XD

I guess that sign placement is your primary influence.. house placement is the secondary.. For example, My Moon is in Aries 8th house.. I'm very Aries as impulsive, aggressive and fiery.. but that house placement directs my Aries energy into something deep, intense and passionate about the depths of psychology and emotions.. Maybe the sign placement is your primary energy and potencial, while the house placement is the "direction", the energy that molds your sign energy and guide it to wherever it leads to (as in in my case, it leads me to something more deep psychologically and emotionally).. ^_^

But somehow, I tend to emanate my 8th house energy rather than the sign energy itself.. my house energy is kinda like a shell, while my sign energy is more hidden..

Glaucus,

I agree on everything you said. I also think, house-positions are more personal. That doesn`t mean sign-positions aren`t important.
I identify strongly with my Moon in aquarius and also all those sagittarius-placements.
I think sign-placements are important, but they are the same for every person born in the same week as me for example. They are still significant, of course.
but house-placements are far more individual, because they change so fast.
Well, but I know everyone has their own opinion, and I don`t want to argue about this. I think everyone has to find their own system, that works for them.

Yes, when looking at the big picture and the "guidelines" of the individual's life the house placements become(much)more influential than signs. But when you go into details, it depends on the point of view (what exactly you're trying to find out about the person). That's why I thought it was a bit odd to call one of them more important. I think you're right Glaucus, it's all semantics and how you frame the question, and I think we're all pretty much trying to say the same thing here

Thanks guys. Your responses were helpful and interesting too....Hearing about people's personal planet placements helps me learn how to interpret charts just generally and yeh, great way to think about it Glaucus; I'm a visual thinker too!

Thanks for your welcomes as well. I've been interested in astrology for years but still lack confidence when it comes to interpretation of other people's charts. No matter, I love it anyway!

Take care Y'all!

Until next time
