Breezy,Maryland has such interesting accents. One would hardly believe a Native Baltimorian, Eastern Shore inhabitant or one from So. MD would even be from the same state LOL... I lived there for 6 years (Annapolis) and had always been amazed at the dialect- then again, I love accents (Sag Sun / Venus in Sag).
Languists say that if one does not work on losing their accent and continues to have an accent by their early 20's, they will NOT lose it. My ex was born and raised in a small town in North Carolina. His accent was thick as thick could be- that was even after living in Maryland, Korea, Arizona and Germany. His family had stronger accents- but his was still thick.
I work with a lady now from the Dundalk area of MD (she moved to AZ- how ironic) and she has a terribly thick accent- which also happens to be the one that hurts my ears almost as much as Brooklyn accents.
Mercury in Gemini is also a mimic- as is Sun in Sag, Sun in Gemini or Mercury in Sag. We can imitate people with ease and sometimes won't even know it. I do this with I am talking about someone and I do my impression of them. I will have people say "OMG Pid, you made the same facial expressions and you sound just like them".
I also imitate accents for the hell of it. It cracks my family and my husband up .
I am from Laguna Hills, CA- my accent was more of a drawing out vowels sound- similar to Valley girl but more of a beach accent. My friends from Ireland said we all sounded more English that anything based on our vowels.
One thing I have noticed as well - especially when I moved back to the Southwest, was how fast me move and speak on the East Coast. When I worked in the cattle industry and after having moved back home, people always told me to slow down. At this time I have lost my Beach girl accent but I do have a bit of a drawl- that has been there for a long time mainly because my father is from Texas and my mom is from southern Kansas. When I lived with my ex from NC my accent really started to change. LOL...
Thumbs up for accents... Southern Accents are yummy.
PS... Southern MD accents are almost Virginian- but it depends on the actual influence. I have heard a deep Southern tone to more of a beachy- Eastern shore accent from So. MD- many Marylanders moved from the cities over the last decade and flooded So MD, so it does sound a bit different these days.
PPS... Did you know that Southern MD fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War? The state was almost cut in half.
Yes... I am a geek.
