Just reading through another thread which brought up singletons and it made me start wondering....

What if any is the difference between a Singleton and Peregrine?

Saturn/Aquarius/6th house the only Air placement in the chart. It's also unaspected, if a 5 degree square to Neptune doesn't count.

Anybody wanna take a shot at this?

I think I'd count a 5deg square, Maire..... Tim W counts larger orbs for the hard aspects (have you been to his website?).

Anyway, here's a link:

Peregrine means a planet without essential dignity, ie a planet that is not in rulership, exaltation, detriment or fall. This is in modern terms though, so for example, something like jupiter in aqu would be peregrine, as jupiter is in rulership of sag, detriment gemini, exalted in cancer and fall in cap.

It gets more complex in the traditional style though as certain degrees in the chart can add dignity to a planet or whether the planet holds a degree and you were born in the day or the night, you may have heard of terms such as "face" or "term". So in traditional astrology, saying jup in aqu is peregrine might not always hold, it would depend on its degree. Peregrine kind of equates to "Malefic" in the old way. We don't tend use this in modern astrology.

Singleton on the other hand is when a planet is on its own in some way. Singletons can occur in three ways and planets can have one, two or three singletons.

They can occur:
1. Being in a triplicity quality that it shares with no other planet, eg the only planet falling in air;
2. Being in a quadriplicity quality that it shares with no other planet, eg in this case say the only cardinal planet
3. Being the only planet falling in a particular house, eg a angular house.

This gives the planet a special quality, it can denote a gift but also a struggle to the planet that you may have to deal with, kind of acts a bit like an unaspected planet.

Eg in my chart, I have a neptune that is singleton by one.
* Neptune is in Sag but I have venus in sag and other planets fire - not a singleton
* Neptune is in a mutable sign - but I also have venus etc in other planets that fall in a mutable sign
* Neptune is the only planet that falls in a succedent house though and this is what it makes it a singleton by 1. It falls in house 8. I have no other planets in other succedent houses, ie houses 2, 5, 11.

In your case, because Saturn is the only planet in an air sign, it is definitely singleton by one. I can't tell you anything else, you have to determine if it is singleton in any other way, ie (1) is it the only planet in houses 3, 6, 9 and 12; (2) is it the only planet planet that is in a fixed sign - probably not as it seems that ura is in a fixed sign to get a square.

I'd still count saturn squ ura in your chart. But whether saturn is aspected or not doesn't make an impact as to whether a planet is a singleton. My neptune is relatively well aspected.

I should also add that the only real degree thing that modern astrologers use is "accidental dignity", that is, if a planet falls within 5 degrees of either the AC, MC, IC or DC then the planet gets "power" and is not peregrine then.

Zala~

I would agree with you on the 5degree orb thing. It's just that there are so many conflicting opinions I am not experienced enough to have my own opinion on orbs so I tend to put it out there as my little disclaimer, lol.

I read the NoelTyl link, which was helpful in understanding peregrine, so thanks. About Tim W. I'm not familiar with him, do you have a link for him?

23~

Thanks for illustrating the difference. My Saturn would then be considered a singelton by 1. No other Air planets. Gemini and Libra are empty, though Gemini is my MC.

So if I understand this, Saturn may very well have a gift/struggle to confer upon me? I'm thinking that would be connected to something Aquarian/6th house oriented, perhaps? Along those lines...I have a very humanitarian service-oriented career at which I am very successful. It took me several years, over a decade to get to this point, but I am blissfully happy with what I do and I'm my own boss, which suits me very well. I definitely feel blessed to have found my niche in working life especially when I know so many people who feel their working lives are drudgery and unfulfilling. Now if I could just get my love life straight...hahahaha

You guys are great, thanks again!
