Determining Motivation | Isthmus Nekoi

Figuring out what drives a person is the most fundamental part of natal chart interpretation. Don't skimp on this step as it will serve as the structure by which you will interpret the specifics of a chart: relationships, romance/sex, money, career. All the physical parts of a person's life has a psychological, motivational component. Even money is deeply psychological: what makes money valuable, what is acceptable to do for money etc. Take note however, that motivation is not the same thing as ambition. Motivation does not necessarily result in taking action; it can very well result in non-action. For example, a chart may demonstrate a strong desire to avoid conflict and a tendency towards taking the path of least resistance.

The following are only suggested steps in determining motivation; the more you practice, the more you will gain a feel for charts and the less you will need to follow any procedure.

1) Examine the placement of the Sun and Moon and the aspects they make
The luminaries comprise the basic elements of a person's psyche and as such, their placements give the strongest indication of motivation in a chart.

The Sun shows the core identity of an individual and the sign/house placement of the sun will show what a person needs in order to maintain vitality in their life, to feel alive. The sun placement represents what will activate a person's sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and shows what they need to get excited and energetic. Often I find that areas ruled by the house in which the sun falls will always be present, if not abundant in a person's life. For example, relationships are so vital to a 7th house sun, s/he will almost never be without a significant personal relationship, even if it is with an animal. A 2nd house sun must have a stable source of income, or if not financial, then another form of physical wealth. It is almost as if the sun is a magnet which draws in the energies signified by its placement. Aspects to the sun (as well as its depositor) will demonstrate how difficult or easy it is for an individual to express him/herself and to attain a well developed sense of being: the feeling that one is intrinsically worthy despite one's faults.

The Moon shows the primal, emotional needs of an individual and its sign/house placement will show a person's "comfort zone". It represents what a person needs to reach a state of satiation, or security and correlates to the parasympathetic nervous system (lie down and be fed). If a sun's needs are not met, a person suffers in self esteem. When a moon's needs are not met, a person suffers on a deeper, instinctual level. The individual is anxious, needy and will attempt to supplicate his/her needs for nurturing through substitutions. Aspects to the moon will demonstrate the general emotional stability of an individual and their ability to nurture or take care of themselves. Hard aspects to the moon are one of the most difficult to deal with, and often indicate problems in the upbringing of the individual, especially in terms of the mother.

2) Examine the placement of Saturn
Fear is an incredibly powerful motivator. Wherever Saturn is placed, there is an element of fear attached and the result could result in a keen aversion to whatever the house rules or a deep fascination, or an ambivalent attitude (meaning the individual experiences both aversion/fascination). Saturn can create a lot of tension in a chart and because it represents the reality principal it shows where a person has a deep need to seek resolution. All planets can represent a need in the natal chart, but Saturn in particular will highlight the life lessons an individual feels pressured to resolve. Hard aspects from Saturn in particular create a lot of pressure towards seeking resolution.

3) Examine the hard aspects of the chart
Like Saturn, hard aspects in the chart indicate tension within a chart and the individual will return again and again to those aspects attempting to release some of that tension. How they approach the tension, how they behave, will be covered in part two of this section.

4) Examine the progressed Moon
A progressed moon is a quick and dirty way of determining the current emotional need of an individual. Even if we can't have planets in every single sign/house, it does not mean those parts of the natal chart are not relevant. Transiting and progressed planets, exchanges with our environment and other people will bring the absent energies into our lives. The sign/house of the progressed moon gives an individual the opportunity to integrate its energy into their life on an emotional and instinctual level. This task will be easy or difficult given the natal placement of the moon, and whether the energy is one that is familiar (example: progressed moon is in the same element as the natal moon) or foreign.

An article covering the similar theme of "drivers" can be found online. It's an excerpt from Carol Rushman's book The Art of Predictive Astrology: Forecasting Your Life Events, a highly recommended read.
