I'm actually not as I'm a tad older, but recently I read this article that I wound up finding 273 hits in Google News for and it was some supposed research finding that current college students are vain, self-centered, and narcissistic, and moreso than their predecessors. I found this rather interesting, as I recall the age group I am in got labelled as being rather excited about using new technologies (I'm of the class that graduated high school in 2000, and was born in 82).

So I decided to look at this astrologically, at the generational planets. The new college generation would have been born about the years of 1985 and 1988. Pluto had changed signs in late 83, entering Scorpio. Neptune changed signs, entering Capricorn in 1984. Uranus stayed in Sagittarius, so I am thinking that planet is not the culprit, especially considering what the 2 mean together.

I'm confused just because narcissism, vanity, and self-centeredness are words that are associated with Leo, which we see none of here. Could it be the Pluto in Scorpio? And if so it seems like maybe either the generation is just young where the benefits of that placement aren't being seen yet, or it is being misinterpreted?

VTT - I read the same thing, and from your research, it actually does make sense to me. Scorpio is actually a power hungry sign, very motivated, and strong willed. With the ruling planet at home in the sign of Scorpio, I would imagine these traits are increased dramatically.

Neptune in Capricorn gives this planet a strong dose of reality. Instead of being so idealistic and dreamy, it is probably more focused here, however the "dreams" probably revolve more around materialistic things, as well as power and authority. Capricorn can be just as vain and self-serving as Leo, but not as "obvious" about it.

It will be interesting to see in the years to come, how many entrepreneurs and powerful leaders come out of this generation.

I blame Paris Hilton and cell phones What are their signs? hehe Gemini and Aquarius?

I think it has to do with all parents with enough money sending their kids to college, instead of kids that REALLY want to go to college working for it, begging for it, and finding a way, because they WANT to be there. College has become an extended high school. Many of the young people in my college classes try to get by without reading the material and most of them don't complete the assignments (it's easy to see online because they are posted). Most wait until the last minute and then try to copy what others have said thinking that no one will notice the difference. I don't think that there are actually MORE teenagers/young people who do this than in previous generations... I just think that more of them are GOING TO COLLEGE now.

I heard about this on NPR... and I do think its due to the child rearing practices of the 1980s.

I agree the child rearing practices of the 80s probably caused this monsterously spoilt generation.
I can see it especially in the differences between people raised in the country and those in the city.

Same age, completely different upbringing.

People I know from the country were raised more 'traditionally' than those in the city. They weren't molly coddled.
Simon Cowell got blasted when he told american idol contestants their parents should've told them they sucked. Wouldn't that have been better than to have it said in front of millions of people?
If you sucked at football/netball/soccer/basketball/whatever in the country you got left off the team, in the city they made an extra team and gave everyone a go.

Whats the point of building self-esteem if its based on lies???

Narcissism is created by this, many in that generation simply cannot accept they can't do something or be something cos all their life they've been told they can do anything.

I'm not raising my kids like that, they know what they're good and not so good at. They excell at what they're good at cos they know for certain they are, I wouldn't tell them otherwise.

Today’s Pluto in Scorpio generation can be quite off-putting to many older adults. Every generation has its ways of rebelling. The challenging Pluto in Scorpio square to Pluto in Leo (those who were born approximately 1939-1958) means that Baby Boomers—a huge swath of the population—find this generation especially troublesome and difficult.

Read the rest:
http://www.astrofuturetrends.com/id29.html

Also, the Baby Boomers lived during some turbulent times (60s/70s). A lot of our parents wanted to protect us from the things they experienced as teenagers/adolescents (for our better welfare or not).

I was born in early '83, Pluto in Libra, though this doesn't exclude me from the 'Gen-Y' pop. I have some critical hard aspects from Pluto in my chart, so I'd feel either way.

Non-astrological, but worth reading, as it expounds on what Ozmeg said above:
The Inverse Power of Praising Kids

*edit... On a side note... I have a bone to pick with the American public education system too. Small example: I'm currently assisting in the development of some elementary-level math textbooks. I really shouldn't be saying this, but the material is *severely* watered down (one major con of the 'No Child Left Behind' Act). I read an article that said that the math standards in the U.S. are so comparatively low that future generations may have trouble competing in the global economy. How much further can you simplify 2 + 3? Textbook developers have been breaking down instructions to ensure student comprehension, but at the very expense of challenging the students intellectually. And let's not get started on literature.

I just re-read my own post and I was horrified at what I saw, "I blame Paris Hilton and cell phones What are their signs? hehe Gemini and Aquarius?" Just want to say that I am NOT saying that the naughty college kids in article are probably Gems or Aquas, I was trying to joke that Paris seems like a Gem to me and I was attributing Aqua to technology (cell phone in my comment).

Hope no Gems or Aquas thought otherwise! Sheesh, run down my own element even...
Fried brain lately. Sry

My favorite years are '86 and '87. '86 is my year with Jupiter in Pisces, lovely people lol '87 is the next year with Jupiter in Aries. They think Ariens are the best thing since sliced bread tee hee lol

'85 can get overly serious sometimes.. I have close friends in that year but as an overall vibe I can't say I love'em.

'84s seem a bit devious to me.. That might be Chinese astrology lol They're the Rat sign. I'm a Tiger.

'88 I don't know any.

There are pretty big generational differences from one year to the next, in my opinion. I couldn't slump them all together, as this study does. I've been in group situations with '85, '86 and '87 and I have to say there was a very different vibe.

I was born in 89 but I am already attending a university. I have one friend in 'my generation' that was also born in 89 who attends college, and I have respect for her. Everyone else that goes to college with me that are in 'my generation' that I know disgust me with their vanity and stupidity and ruthlessness.

All of my friends are 86's, 85's, and 82's. The 88's and 87's I know really bother me...and for the most part the 89's do too.
