How do you determine the dominant planet in a chart? According to astro.com my strongest planets are Pluto, Neptune and Mercury respectively. And i dont know why they rank so high. What are the factors? And is there any difference between a chart ruler planet and a dominant planet? Also, does anyone have any input about pluto, neptune and mercury being dominant planets? My birthdate and time is 10th november 1992, 8.12am, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Thanks in advance and any help would be very much appreciated. IP: Logged |

house placement...sign...aspects decide a planets power.example: mars in capricorn (exalted) squared by venus in aries it's a square so lots of tension aries to mars (ruler)...more strength.... that may not have been the best lesson, but meh IP: Logged |

My sun and moon has more sextiles and trine than my saturn but my saturns rank is high in my chart. So.. im trying hard to understand this. ------------------ Sun in Scorpio Moon in Taurus Asc in Sagittarius IP: Logged |

the dominate planet is usually the Ruler of the Ascendant but can be a planet conjunct the MC, Asc., Nadir, Desc. or A heavily aspected planet (that touches everything) http://www.astrologyclub.org/articles/inferior/inferior.htm The DOMINANT FUNCTION in the chart is indicated by where the most energy is collected and the INFERIOR FUNCTION is where there is the least or none at all. The dominant function is where we feel most natural, comfortable, at home; we take the talents and abilities associated with it for granted. It is easy and natural. Therefore, it may not be a source of great motivation. The inferior function comes into play when we are under stress, when we have to cope, when we feel out of our element. This can be a source of great motivation and creative expression. But, there is a trickster quality about it; it is there when least expected. It undermines the dominant function. Suddenly, all the gifts, talents, achievements can be wiped out! The rug is pulled out from under the comfortable, habitual way of being and interacting. The inferior function manifests in embarrassing and inappropriate ways. edited to add: can also be a planet involved in one or more major configurations.

Thanks for the info, lalalinda!I am having the hardest time trying to determine my dominant planet. Astro.com lists it as Uranus, but I am just not seeing it...? But, astro.com also lists my domainant signs to be (1) Scorpio and (2) Sagittarius. Would that give weight to their natural rulers, to any planets placed in those signs, or neither? Here is my chart: And here is what I have been able to come up with: Pluto: + Ruler of my sun sign, as well as two other planets + Only planet conjunct any angle in my chart (MC by 4 degrees, but placed in my 9th house) + Ruler of (one of) the dominant sign in my chart + In mutual reception to my natal Venus - Planet is "In Fall" ? Chart ruler placed in naturally ruled house (8th) ? Possibly ruler of a mini-stellium, depending on the source, but I am going with no Saturn: + Chart ruler + "Base"(?) of T-Square between Saturn, Moon, and Mars Venus: + Natal ruler of MC + Placed within its own natally ruled house (10th) + In mutual reception with my Pluto - Planet is in detriment - In retrograde ? Possibly member of mini-stellium, depending on source, but I am going with no Neptune: + Part of mini-stellium + Placed in naturally ruled house (12th) ? Mini-stellium straddling cusp of naturally ruled house Mars: + Part of mini-stellium + One of the legs of a T-Square between my Saturn (chart ruler), Moon, and Mars ? Secondary ruler of (one of) the dominant sign in my chart (according to some sources) Uranus: + Planet is in exaltation ? Possibly member of mini-stellium, depending on source, but I am going with no As you can see, obviously, I have gone and confused myself because I am apparently only at the level to know enough to hurt myself... LOL!
Any insights to get me over the threshold of confusion?!? ------------------ Sun: Scorpio Moon: Gemini Asc: Capricorn IP: Logged |

I would say (and some may disagree) but the dominate planet is your Chart Ruler, Saturn.Your Saturn is heavily aspected and is in mutual reception by house to Uranus I would call Pluto your most "Elevated Planet" (Pluto is not as aspected and has only one semi difficult aspect) edit to add: Your Uranus is Exalted by sign, aspected and in Mutual Reception to your Ruler which one do you feel more?

Thank you for your quick response!I am not quite sure I understand my Saturn and Uranus being in mutual reception by house. This is the first I have learned of mutual reception being applicable by house, so please bear with me. I can see my Uranus being in the 10th house as probably being part of it, but would not my Saturn need to be in my 11th house (instead of my 8th)? Asking for learning purposes... Hmmmm, Saturn vs. Uranus? I suppose it would depend on which you count more "natural tendencies" or "natural desires". Until a few years ago, I would have to say that Saturn / Capricorn had a massive impact on who I was. I had to whole get the house, the career, the guy, the dogs, the money, etc. and magically be happy misconception. Didn't quite work out that way. More recently, I have had to re-evaluate what I truly value and want out of life, and I suppose it has become a great deal more Uranian. I suppose it would be relevant that even before my life jarring introspection and revelations, I was a software engineer, apparently a Uranian occupation. While I suppose it should have appealed to my Uranus (and probably my Saturn), I came to the conclusion that I wanted to help people and not devote my entire life to something that wouldn't really matter five years down the road. I am not sure where exactly that would fit astrologically... LOL! From what I can figure, the massive overhaul of my life as a result of digging deeper to find what I truly want and who I really am was a result of Pluto nearing the end of its transit on my 12th house, which would be another reason that I had figured that Pluto was probably my dominant planet. When I first started looking, I thought perhaps I had hit my Saturn Return 4-5 years early, but Pluto transiting someone's natal 12th house was the best description I could find of my past few years. I really haven't a clue which I feel more, and am not quite certain that it matters. But, I feel this lack of ability to ascertain which is more dominant is inhibiting my learning. IP: Logged |

great thoughts alchemeFor your Mutual Reception Saturn is strong and at home in the 10th house, Uranus is powerful and exalted in the 8th (it is also exalted in Scorpio) My deciding factor in choosing Saturn over Pluto or Uranus was if you use Pluto as conjunct the MC then that too would be a Mutual Reception between Pluto and Saturn. (Saturn/10 Pluto/8) astro.com delineated it (Pluto) conjunct the MC but still put it in the 9th house. (Planets move backwards through the houses so Pluto was finished transiting the 10th house) Pluto is home in the 8th and of course Saturn belongs at the top of the Chart (10th house) it's only off by minutes. edit to add: Exact Pluto/MC conjunction happened 16 minutes before you were born. You are correct. If Uranus and Saturn were in mutual reception by house then: Uranus is in the 10th house (ruled by Saturn) Saturn is in the 11th house (ruled by Uranus) Since Saturn is in the 8th house, not the 11th, there is no mutual reception by house. In a different house, Tim IP: Logged |

Linda,You said: quote: Your Uranus is...in Mutual Reception...
Since Uranus is in the sign Scorpio, the only way Uranus could be in mutual reception is if: Scorpio (ruled by Pluto) modifies Uranus Aquarius (ruled by Uranus) modifies Pluto Since Pluto is in the sign Libra, not Aquarius, there is no mutual reception involving Uranus. Mutual Receptions involve the same rulerships, not a combination of exaltation and rulership. Signing off, Tim IP: Logged |

Hi Tim,Since this Mutual Reception is a trade-off of house energy only I mix and match (home and exaltations) what planet would you say is her dominate planet? (just curious) IP: Logged |

Thanks lalalinda for your warm welcome. And yeah my moon is in Taurus and exalted but its very blocked. I have my moon opposite sun and pluto and square saturn. I have a question. What about my Neptune and Mars having mutual exaltation(if thats what you call it) by sign? But both are in a Fall position. And opposes each other. Neptune is strong in my chart and i dont know why. ------------------ Sun in Scorpio Moon in Taurus Asc in Sagittarius IP: Logged |

You have a lovely chart. Mars/Cancer and Neptune/Capricorn I hesitate here only because Neptune's exaltation is not so defined. Cancer or ? I've read both, yet Sag would make sense if you follow the rule (the square behind) example:Mars rules Aries, exalted Cap Saturn rules Cap, exalted in Libra Uranus rules Aquarius, exalted in Scorpio etc. I don't always take liberties with Mutual Receptions the above posts were only because they are by house and so free flowing and easy. Two focus areas for you to start with Mercury conjunct the Ascendant this is important because Mercury is your Descendant (7th house) Ruler. conjunct the Ascendant shows how easy it is for you to form "partnerships" of all kinds The second focus area is Uranus conjunct Neptune (because it's a tight aspect) http://www.astrologyweekly.com/astrological-aspects/uranus-conjunct-neptune.php Your Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Capricorn are in Mutual Reception. edit to add: the "square behind" does not apply to all exaltations IP: Logged |
