I got confused. It's said that MC is the most visible part of the chart. It's how the other people see us. What's the difference between ascendant and MC?

AC represents our personality and personal views/attitudes, and MC is how we are outside/publically.. I guess that AC is also how we behave to ourselves and how we see ourselves us (since DC is how we behave in relationships and our ideal about relationships). MC can also represent our goals and directions.. ^_^

If AC represents personality, what does exactly the sun sign represent. I'm trying to make it clear to myself. Do we identify more with the AC or the sun sign? I thought sun sign shaped the personality.

The Sun is your core, the real you.

The Ascendant is your veneer or the personality you present to the world.

If the Sun and Ascendant are in hard aspect to each other, what people see is not necessarily the real you.

Hope that helps

not quite jupitersgirl
The MC is the top of your chart and shows what you should strive for (to reach the top) Here is your career, your standing in the community, your reputation. It also shows one parent.

While the Sun represents the real you, your ego and your self-expression (and also what energizes you), the Ascendant (and other points such as IC/DC/MC) is like a filter of the energies of your chart. For example, I have Aries Sun, but my Virgo Ascendant has to "control" my Arian sides - like remembering myself to behave properly and patiently when my Aries side wants action and has no patience lol..

You can imagine the energies of your birth chart inside of a sphere/container (inside of you), while the AC/IC/DC/MC are the holes where the energies are released.. ^_^

comica - I view the angles the way you do, as filters. I don't think they control just what we put out but also what we take in. They filter how we perceive the world and also how we express our energies in the world.

jupitersgirl - I've noticed that the AC is a more fundamental part of a person's character, while the MC is more how a person functions in social settings. The AC is the always present inner monologue while the MC is more how you want/feel compelled to behave in large groups. You'll feel the AC's presence as a filter everywhere in your chart, while the MC just kicks in when relating the self to the community. But that's just been my take on it from the charts I've studied of the people closest to me, so take it for what it's worth.

I think you're right Jane. I'm a sag sun, cancer ascendant and aries MC. I am a very caring person actually but people see me more careless and impulsive (I couldn't find the exact words .)

jupitersgirl - I can relate. I'm a Sag with a Scorpio AC and Leo MC. I do behave more like a Leo socially, but the Scorpio AC is always there too, I just don't display it as much. My bf has a Pisces AC and Sag MC, and he comes across as very funny and somewhat emotionally detached, but he's also one of the kindest, most compassionate people. That's a strong part of who he is but it's not as obvious a part. Many of the people I know come across more as their MC than their AC socially.

This MC thing is very interesting. I only know the very basics about astrology but I can see where people I have pulled info on seem to be more like their MC than their ASC. Even appearance as well as personality. Its like they are a mix. Could this be true with anyone else out there?

Copyright 1998 - Today Moses Siregar III

The Midheaven is the cusp of the tenth house (in most house systems), also known as the M.C. (medium coeli). The M.C. is opposite the I.C. (imum coeli--"bottom of the sky" in Latin). Technically, it is the most elevated degree of the zodiac. (The M.C. is not actually the zenith, which is the point in the heavens directly overhead at any given location; nor is the I.C. actually the nadir) The Midheaven, and the location of its ruling planet (as well as any planets near the MC or in the 10th house), is usually thought to describe the kind of vocation one will grow into and how well that goes.

But I have also found the M.C. to be one of the major components of one's basic personal projection (credit to Hilarion for pointing this out to me). The M.C. is, to me, very much an active personal placement, and to understand personality, the M.C. ought to be looked into. What I have always found to be accurate is that the M.C. shows qualities that others pick up on and perceive in us--the way others would probably describe us--because we project these qualities whether or not we actually have them; I have also found that the M.C. represents qualities that we are learning to have the confidence to project to others. As such it indicates personal qualities and character traits that one must grow into during one's life. It is also thus one of the most reliable, though not necessarily the most major, indications of life purpose. The M.C., therefore, is much more of a mask that one deliberately wears in public life, rather than the Ascendant (which is often called a mask), because the Ascendant is more like one's face , than one's mask. The Ascendant does not run as deep as the Sun and Moon, but is certainly not as superficial as a mask.

The Midheaven naturally corresponds to letter 10 (astrological alphabet). Thus there is an inherent affinity with the Midheaven and some of the attributes of Capricorn. As such, the Midheaven represents qualities that we decide to project to others to succeed socially. It is good to be mindful of whether or not the Midheaven qualities we project to others are authentic to our true self. Yet whether or not this is true may not matter much, because it seems that one is unable to stop projecting these qualities to others. I think this is because one's inner self has chosen to arrange one's life so that one has abundant opportunities to express the qualities of one's M.C., almost certainly because one's inner self is seeking to develop these qualities, and by practicing them over a lifetime, one is more likely to acquire them.

To study your Midheaven, go through the first section of the tutorial (Using parts 1 & 2 of the Course/Tutorial Together) and consider the following things about the sign on your Midheaven:
1) On the first round, think about how you tend to project these qualities to others whether or not you actually have them, and how others tend to perceive these qualities in you.
2) On the second round, think about how these are qualities that you are learning to have the confidence to project to others, or express in public life.
Start here

Fill in the following sentence:
" I am a _______ / _______ (insert your Sun and Moon), I think I am a ________ (insert your Ascendant), but I project to others that I am a _______ (insert your M.C.)."

To adequately understand the nature of the M.C., we should also look at our tenth house planets as qualities that we tend to project to others, and as qualities which others tend to perceive in us. I do not think that tenth house planets necessarily indicate qualities that one is learning to have to confidence to project to others, though, but this could certainly be the case for some individuals.

Peri, thanks a lot for that - VERY interesting reading and it made MC much more understandable to me.

I am a Virgo/Libra, I think I am a Leo, but I project to others that I am an Aries.
