Sure it's possible. It just depends on various placements in the birth chart. If we're just basing this on sun signs alone, I would still say it's possible even though air and earth signs aren't typically thought of as compatible. I'm a gemini and one of my friends is a virgo; we've been friends for four years, so friendship is definitely possible.
Geminis and virgos are both intellectual, logical and mutable signs (they have a lot of interests). Virgos can be a bit nitpicky, but geminis aren't the sort that will burst into tears at criticism. Instead they tend to either brush off the comment or retaliate with cutting remarks, which can be a wake-up call to virgos (this is true with my friend at least...don't know about other virgos).
Virgos can teach geminis to be more practical instead of being too cerebral and geminis can teach virgos to laugh and not take life TOO seriously. Overall, I think the friendship between these two signs can work out well.
