Seems that we're always talking about the importance of sun/moon & venus/mars aspects in synastry, but what about Mercury? Certainly strong compatibility involving Mercury would not be enough by itself, but I don't feel like it is given nearly the credit it deserves when it comes to synastry. You can have common interests with someone and a burning desire to take them to the bedroom, but if you can't communicate with them worth a darn, you might as well throw in the towel.

I know in my own experience, challenging mercury/mercury aspects are just that - a big fat challenge. There are many misunderstandings which generally result in hurt feelings. On the flip side easy Mercury aspects make for such smooth communication. There seems to be more laughter, the conversations are longer and more in depth, and if there is a conflict it is resolved much more quickly and with relative ease.

Has anyone else noticed this? I think Mercury deserves to carry more weight regarding synastry.

I also agree.. ^_^ In my case, I noticed that I find it a bit hard to relate to people who has an incompatible Mercury with mine (but maybe it's coz Mercury is my chart ruler?), even if our synastry seems to have great aspects.
Non-astrologically speaking, I have to agree that even if you feel very attracted and comfortable with someone, it might be hard to work things out if the communication is problematic and you often misunderstand each other.. On the other hand, if you can communicate well with each other, then both might find it easier to solve the differences together.. ^_^

It seems Mercury would be of utmost importance.

After all, Mercury rules the mind. It rules communication, perception, decision making, how we rationalize things. Sure, through the Moon we feel...but how do we know what we feel without the aid of Mercury? How do we decide if someone is indeed right for us? Surely the Moon and Sun make someone familiar to us, Venus and Mars may make us carnally respond to others but what takes all these feelings and reactions and makes sense of them...

Without a solid understanding (Mercury) of what exists between two people, a relationship cannot possibly reach it's full potential. It's lucky if anything can even begin.

How do you meet that "special" person? Through communications. Hearing, talking... Communication, once again the realm of Mercury.

How do you express what you like/dislike? What feels good/hurts? What works/fails? What you want versus what you'd rather not get into? What keeps a relationship of any sort alive and functioning well? What is the most sensitive part of any relationship? Communication. Bodily and vocal.

Who decides if a relationship has died?

Mercury. Maybe we should open this thread up for strictly Mercury aspects in people's synastry...and we can analyze it's effect.

umm and we all know about those relationships where one of the people wake up after six months, a year or two and realize while they might be overwhelmingly attracted to the other person physically or even emotionally as well....they have nothing in common and can't talk. Venus/Mars/Pluto might get you in to bed with some one, but I have serious doubts you'll stay with someone unless both Mercury's are being activated and expressed.

I agree that it's good to have compatible mercuries - but if you can't then it helps very much to have merc in good aspect to the other's sun, moon or venus.

I've always belived Mercury in good aspect to Venus is very underrated. I've always loved having that aspect in synastry.

Basically I think that what mercury brings to relationships is the element of friendship. In fact, I think that in platonic friendships, mercury is probably one of the biggest players, along with the sun and ascendant, and to a lesser degree, the moon. Venus and mars don't come into play much at all in our friendships. Really, the biggest thing we do with our friends is communicate. I've taken note of this because all my life ALL of my friends with the exception of one Gemini and one Pisces, have been fire signs. I have a Leo ascendant and mercury in Sag. I feel comfortable with them immediately and I love talking to them. I love their enthusiasm, honesty, and zest for life. I know they won't get annoyed with me either when I act loud or dramatic.

It just seems as though this planet is underestimated when comparing two charts. People seem to think if you have a sun-moon conjunction, or a venus-mars conjunction, you are instant soul mates, even if your mercuries are squared. Squared mercuries create plenty of problems. Sure, they can be overcome like anything else, but it seems like it's basically ignored. When we're old and gray and need help walking to the bathroom, sex and a similar taste in movies isn't going to matter as much as enjoying TALKING to the person you've shared your life with.

Both my girlfriend and my Mercuries are in Sag. Mine's conjunct her Sun, and her's is conjunct my Neptune. Our friendship and ability to communicate is probably the best aspect of our relationship. We differ in so many of our tastes, but the relationship still holds.

I agree w/ you CrankyCap....Mars/Venus & Sun/Moon are important for initial attaction, but Mercury is important in the long run if the relationship is to last.Without open communication, what do you even have, aside from maybe some hot sex??Mercury is my Chart Ruler(and conjuncts my Gem Asc.),so I find this planet to be of particular importance. The past 2 guys I've had relationships with have had Mercury-ruled Suns(a Virgo & now a Gem.)...I wonder why??LOL!Strangely...the Gem I'm seeing now has Mercury conj his Asc.(Cancer) in house 12,just like me,& a 12th house Sun.We are similar in these Natal aspects. Our Mercuries are not within orb to be aspected, but are located 14 degrees apart.Other Mercury aspects between us....

I agree 100%.

I am really conscious of Mercury aspects in any reading, they always translate exactly into real life.

I think Mercury is not going to make or break an attraction... but it CAN make or break the relationship. Bad Mercury aspects create so much misunderstanding and BLOCKS in communication. I can never seem to make myself understood or say the right thing with people I have bad Mercury with.

It just causes everything to unravel

I think it's hugely important. The guy I feel such a strong attachment to is Leo sun Virgo ascendant Mercury in Leo. I'm Leo Sun Cancer ascendant and Mercury in Virgo. I've never in all my life been able to talk to anybody like I can him and it was IMMEDIATE. I know we have a lot of good Mercury aspects I just don't have time to list them.
