I'm curious about other people's experiences discussing astrology (or reading discussions) outside of astrology forums. It seems like most of the world is ignorant and hostile to astrology, most strongly in online forums.

Even with the condescension and hostility, it's still rewarding to explain the basic principles and dispel misconceptions. But, mostly it seems people keep on thinking it's bunk not worth a second glance.

Anyone have any memorable experiences, advice, or comments?

i always experienced that sort of willfully blind, closed off attitude as well my whole life until recently when i moved to a very funky little town and half the people i tell smile and seem happy for me (i want to be a Pro someday ), and half give those same weak arguments as to why astrology is stupid, well, i would say, not even half. just one now and then.

i find it pointless to argue about it or get into discussions with people who are closed minded. maybe that is just because i am not sure of the right things to say! hope to find some good ideas in this thread!

Thanks. It's a lot easier online when I can make formal arguments and provide the right evidence (links, examples, whatever). There are at least rules that most debaters follow online if they want to be taken seriously. Lucky for me, these rules are like second nature to my communication style.

In person, I find it best to just hand them a good astrology book and point out the relevant passages. Who doesn't love hearing about themselves?

Ive only came more close to astrology when i red Linda´s Sun signs.

Then i felt very indentified with what she said about me and my family members-then i passed to see how natals can show us deeper patterns of ourselves - they in fact show that!

I have lucky cause my Mom believes in astrology so i can talk to her about this but when i try to discuss this woth pther persons they jus laugh and think i might be a little lunatic hihihi

But the good thing is that i feel much more in tune with others and myself after i discovered astrology - i underrstand better - and i feel a secret joy on thinking that i can even improve always this new vision of the oworld and others

I'm slowly turning everyone I know!!!

My OH said to me last night "There must be something in it - I'm starting to come round, El!" I was overjoyed, as he's always been completely closed to it. He even admitted that he now knows whenever he meets a Scorpio!!! I'm so proud of him!!!!!

Basically, the way I get the birth times of my friends is by offering to do them a report whenever it's their birthday. They all jump at the chance and are now all slowly becoming addicted!!!!!

Yesterday I was IMing my girlfriend about a show she had expressed interest in watching, and instead of typing the name of the show properly I typed, "Property Virgo." The show is called Property Virgin. I guess astrology is always on my brain.

I do bring it up. I do always try to figure out who I'm dealing with. I'm at a fairly new job, but within a week or two I knew all of my co-worker's signs (two Libras, and an Aqua). I do pay attention to birthdays. I don't typically bring it up very aggressively. Like I'll ask a birthday, and then confirm their sign based on the birthday they gave. If they ask me about it I'll admit to knowing about it. If they don't, I'll leave it alone.

People normally see astrology as "another nonsense fortune-telling thing". But well, there are indeed lotsa astrology nonsense things around, such as fake astrologers and sun sign predictions we see in the magazines/newspaper. Yet, it is kinda block-minded to categorize something we don't really understand, based on what the society says (and some people actually think that they are so open-minded and cool.. in fact, they are just following the society's way of thinking.. society says "it's cool to rebel against religions and other systems of beliefs", and people follows, thinking that they are being cool, without even truly understanding a thing).

Astrology is not stupid, what's stupid is how a person uses astrology.
For me, it has become a tool to help myself to understand things such as psychological/spiritual matters through its symbolism (but it's actually not much more than this, as I don't base my life decisions on astrology).

Actually, I avoid talking about astrology, if I sense that the other person isn't much into it. I confess that I'm a bit afraid to be categorized as a fanatic, coz most of the people sees things as this way, there would be no point to continue the talk.. ~_~; and besides, the moment you say "I like astrology!", most of the people would instantly categorize you as fanatic, therefore categorize you as ignorant ("you really are into such nonsense?!!"), and therefore they wouldn't listen to you anymore lol.. XP
But well, I believe that there are people who are truly open-minded and accept that other people are into what they are into, without categorizing them.

Yeah, the power of actually interpreting someone's chart for them usually never fails. Once I was able to diffuse an argument with my mom by showing her Linda's passage on Sag-Pisces relationships. She read it and just smiled and nodded. We still fight, but I think we're more understanding about it.

Acoustic, I definitely do the same. Though I was a bit more bold in college, when at lunch I brought out one of those birthday notebooks and asked my friends to write their names and astro info. I'm not very smooth about asking people I just meet, but I usually do anyhow.

comica, I actually had that experience yesterday, hence the thread. The person did at least admit that,

"I'd at least like to pretend along with the mainstream modernist paradigm that astrology is just a bunch of bunk."

I think people who argue against it are caught off guard about how not zealous astrologers/students of astrology are. I pretty much correct misconceptions, point out that it isn't verifiable (at least not scientifically it seems), and then I offer resources to pit themselves against astrology itself.

As you can see, I'm fine with being labeled a weirdo or fanatic (had that experience whenever people found out I'm Catholic). As I said in my other recent thread, I'm frequently misrepresenting msyelf and frequently misunderstood anyway. Why not just let it all hang out at that point?

Me too. I think I give enough integrity to people that they don't usually dwell on my "hobby."

haha, yeah, same here. Or maybe it's because they're distracted by my Buffy obsession?
