I'd like to understand this better as well.
Here is what I found on the Internet:
quote:

Exaltation
One of the five levels of Essential Dignity. A planet in a sign where it holds exaltation is said to have substantial power. In its sign of exaltation, a planet is likened to an honoured guest. It has temporary but powerful influence in the sign. The power of an exalted planet is about 75% of the planet's strength. The signs which have exalted planets are:

Sign Exalted Planet
Aries Sun
Taurus Moon
Cancer Jupiter
Virgo Mercury
Libra Saturn
Capricorn Mars
Pisces Venus

From Understanding the Birth Chart

quote:
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, and further dignified by term from 6° to 13°. Cancer energy is about discovering, expressing, and hopefully meeting our emotional and spiritual needs. Ultimately, Cancer represents our longing to reconnect with the source, to remember the time when we were able to experience our connection to all creation, and since we were part of all creation, we could not ever experience lack of any kind: all our needs were met. Planets in Cancer often operate out of fear that our needs in this lifetime will not be met, and they seek to either nurture others, or to be nurtured, looking to others to help us survive. Jupiter is the only planet that can truly expand to meet all of Cancer's needs. When Jupiter is in Cancer, Jupiter can experience and express that our emotional needs will truly be met because there is more than enough love in the universe to go around. Jupiter in Cancer certainly can be open, loving, and nurturing to others (and to itself!), but Jupiter is always teaching as well. Jupiter in Cancer wants to teach others how to realize that we are truly loved and protected, that we are more than enough because we are all the universe.

The Exaltations originate from Liber Astronomiae by Guido Bonatti, where they are attributed to Albumasar and Alchabitius, both ancient astronomers.

Jupiter symbolizes winds from the North. Jupiter in Cancer was said to cause North winds that brought exceptional nourisment to vegetable crops and increased crop sizes. Because expansive nourishment, abundance and North winds were all under the rule of Jupiter, and those happened while it was in Cancer, it was decided that was the Exaltation. Also, in the Liber Astronomiae, Jupiter in Cancer in the 15th Degree is the actual Exaltation.

Astrologically, Jupiter works well in Cancer as the person with this is able to develop and then share their fortunes through emotional compassion. Nelson Mandela and Jiddu Krishnamurti are good examples.
