I'm starting to think Pholus is very important, both in the natal chart and in transit. I've been studying the transits of pivotal points in my life and I have found Pholus to be a key player.

During the darkest period in my life Pluto was squaring my Moon and Nodes (my Moon is conjunct my S Node/opposite my N Node). Now I'm going through a very similar phase but this time it's Pholus that's squaring my Moon and Nodes. I've been thinking for some time how similar this period is to the other period in my life but I finally put it together when I factored Pholus into my transit study.

In transit, Pholus was center stage on the day I met my husband and the day we got married. It was center stage this past December when I had emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder. It's center stage right now as I'm currently facing more health crises and emotional trauma. During the darkest period of my life Pholus was conjunct my natal Pluto while transiting Pluto was squaring my natal Moon and Nodes.

In my chart my natal Pholus is fairly prominent -

conjunct my N Node, my Valentine/Juno midpoint and my Moon/Venus midpoint

opposite my Moon, S Node, Atlantis, my Draconic Sun/Venus midpoint, my Draconic Siva, my Draconic Asbolos, my Draconic Soma, my Draconic Plato, my Venus/Vertex midpoint, and my Juno/Valentine midpoint

square my Karma, Varuna, my Draconic Parvati, my Draconic Devine, my Draconic Panacea, and my Mars/Chiron midpoint

sextile my Valentine, Juno, Kaali and Merlin

My Draconic Pholus -

conjunct my MC/Mars midpoint and my Solstic Uranus

opposite my Pluto, my Draconic Black Moon Lilith and my Hecate

Has anyone looked at what role Pholus plays in their natal chart and in transit? I'm interested to hear other people's experiences with it.

*edited to update natal and Draconic chart info.

Good lord! That's some history you have with Pholus.

I'm going to look up mine and see if I notice a correlation of events with the Big P.

The asteroid karma has been prominent in my chart; whenever something major happened, it was afflicted to the max.

Tigerlily,

I`m sorry to hear that you have to face such dramas.

HOwever, I myself have noticed a clear impact of Pholus; he seems to play a pivotal role in the "connection" with the man who influenced my life greatly, even though we never really "connected" - it was all inside of me.
An insane crush that developed into a hopeless onesided love or was it still a crush? With no hopes of ever really meeting him, but still despite all that there were emotions involved, and I`ve had my share of emotional turmoil, I can tell you.
Felt pretty intense.

However, my Pholus is conjunct my Ceres and Jupiter, (ASC-ruler), square my ASC and Mars and sextile my Venus.
It is interesting to observe in the synastry with that man, that my Pholus is sextile his Venus and Karma, oppoiste his Pluto and conjunct his Chiron.
His Pholus is conjunct my Moon and trine my Karma.

Now for the transits:

The day I "noticed" him and fell for him:
Transit Pholus was in my 7th house and exactly opposite my Sun and Mercury, DSC-ruler.

2 years later, when I realized how hopeless my infatuation was, which was a very traumatic experience for me,

Transit Pholus was exactly opposite my Moon (and his Pholus). It was also conjunct his NN and sextile my Karma.

When I saw him (that was planned) Transit Pholus was square my Moon and also square his Nodal - axis.

And just recently, I saw him again, purely coincidentally; he just happened to be in the audience and then later on be special guest at the concert I visited, and it was a complete surprise to see him only a few seats in front of me.
Well, transit Pholus is just conjuncting my Mars (ruler of 4th house), and will leave my 12th house soon, and then will be conjunct my ASC on 7° Sagittarius, my Neptune and NN and it is already trine my IC.

So, yes, in this strange connection Pholus has played his part, interestingly he seems to be tied to my Moon, which happens to be ruler of my 8th house.

oh btw, when I noticed that man, Transit Pluto was exactly square my Moon.
When I spoke to him for the first time (after a show), Transit Pluto was exactly sextile my Moon (and his Pholus) and opposite my Karma.
When I coincidentally "met" him last week, Transit Pltuo was still conjunct my Sun and Mercury. *sighs*

I have actually tickets to see him in two months in a show (pure coincidence that I`ve seen him last week, also).
Transit Pholus will then be conjunct my ASC and NN (ASC: 7°; NN: 10°; Tr-Pholus: 8,5°).
Transit Sun will be conjunct my Venus.
Transit Jupiter will also be conjunct my Venus.
Transit Neptune and Chiron will be conjunct my Moon, and Transit Lilith will be square my Moon.
BTW at the moment I saw him this week, transit Saturn was opposite and transit NN was conjunct my natal Pholus (and his natal Chiron).

What's the mythology for Pholus?

I've got a Pholus, Ceres,Juno, stellium in Pisces, and while I've run across Ceres and Juno interpretations, I've yet come across any Pholus interpretations..

Anyone got any links?

Thank you for the links Maire31...

I actually have Pholus ( along with ceres and juno) in a less than 2 degree trine with mercury in my chart... ( Pholus with mercury was mentioned in the links)..

I like the "unusual and thoughtless actions" comment

My mercury is in the 9th house ( the asteroids are in my 5th)..

I have noticed a complete change of mindset, whenever I've gotten the chance to travel to far away places.

Travel, to me anyway, has been a most wonderful way of "shedding my skin" of negative situations.

While I guess that could well be interpreted as a sort of "escapism" considering the post's comments on the orbit of Pholus going out towards Neptune..( the planet of escapism) I think that might be somewhat fitting.

I guess I need to reread those post's again, and try to let it sink in more thouroughly, but, the 1st time I read them I thought... AHA!!!

Hmm... mine is conjunct my natal Mars in the fourth house, squaring Neptune and Venus, trining my Saturn and moon, and sextiling my sun and Mercury. I must find out more about this!

Hey, maybe this is a dumb question, but...oh well! lol I have pholus forming a T-square with neptune and saturn, but since the asteroid itself is a link between these two planets, is this a common aspect? I don't know how to interpret this, other than maybe it means I will have problems making my dreams a reality? Bummer. Btw, the orbs are pretty tight.

Sun - Capricorn (10th House)
Moon - Gemini (2nd House)
Mercury - Sagittarius (9th House)
Venus - Aquarius (11th House)
Mars - Aries (12th House)
ASC - Aries

Here's what I've found about Pholus:

Small cause, big effect. Pholus has the property of release from situations, opening to possibilities, and emerging into new states of existence. It is the Centaur of fast-moving changes, or rapid transformations, typically initiated by one's own action, minor though it may seem. Catalyst. A person with a prominent natal Pholus is in his actions guided by impulses whose motivation he is not really aware of. Actually, he is confronted with energies or parts of his nature that are not incarnated, i.e. that hang over or about him like a cloud (Neptune, the aphelion of Pholus) and urge towards incarnation (Saturn, Pholus´ perihelion) within the material world. In other words: Pholus stands for parts of our nature from which we are still cut off and with which we try to get into contact. The parts in question may be those which cannot be soundly unfolded, or on the other hand a domain where the person intently strives for and with time even reaches great progresses. Pholic impulses are blind in a sense. They press on being realized even if they do not "know", what could be their appropriate place in the actual order of life. On the contrary, they are in conflict with the established conditions. The person in question may feel impelled to actions, motions or gestures that give rise to disastrous life situations. So, Pholus finds himself in a strain between self-destruction and enlargement of his own character by additional energies or horizons of experience. The pholic person walks on the narrow path of great and seemingly easy success, with the risk of catastrophic slips. Whatever happens, afterwards the person is altered. He has broken with his past, has stripped off an old skin, has got over a rocky edge and unexpectedly attained a wonderful tableland, or else is stumbled over it into a precipice.
Pholus in the natal chart is indicative of issues relating to both Saturn and Neptune, i.e. feelings, emotions, sacrifice, dreams, chaos, all Neptunian stuff and the Saturnine influence of order, duty, restriction and control. In aspect to a natal planet Pholus could indicate something we’re not yet fully aware of, something that is waiting to manifest. Perhaps something from our past is restraining us, is keeping it under control. It may become a pressing issue that we blindly and impulsively act upon only to find it has disastrous results. On the other hand, it may lead us to achieve great things. Pholus also has a mediumistic quality, a connection to ‘the other world’ and the ability to get in touch with it.
Aspects from Pholus indicate matters (as identified by the aspected planets) from which the consciousness remains disconnected, although there is potential for such a connection being developed. Impulses governed by the aspected planets may therefore be blind, hasty and disastrous in outcome. But with regard to more intangible realms, Pholus confers a visionary and mediumistic capability.

More on Pholus:

* During transits: a blizard-like surprising "kick" or decision, a spontaneous urge for a fast and radical transformation of oneself often accompanied with euphoria and blind venturesomeness.

* Spontanous and in most cases an easy "shaping of skin" (from Greek: Pholis) and transformation/change and completely ignoration of any risks.

* To eliminate and to make permeable limits and boundaries in an Uranian style so that alien energies can penetrate them, we experience these alien energies often as "chaotic" and unordered.

* To be cast or to be catapult through the "door" into absolute newland and new dimensions, in which you often feel overtaxed and there is no return to the previous state so you have to develop new abilities and cope with the new situation.

* the sudden, unpredictable dissolver and bringer of chaos

* the vabanque-player

* to bring something into flow with the help of an initial ignition, to initiate a chain reaction

* "small cause, big effect"

* the catalyst

* a faux pax or mishap, which causes a chain reaction of tragic events

* the comic of a misfortune even if it's tragic (Dieter Koch)

* the bone of contention or the stumbling-stone (Dieter Koch)

* disturbations or detours turn out to be important tasks and lessons and bring you totally new perspective and point of view/awareness (in Greek mythology this is called a parergon, a sideway-story)

* genius and madness are close together with a strong Pholus in the chart

* the catalyst and provider for a landslide-like change (in history for example) and turning points.

* Pholus exaggerates energies in their raw state, Pholus is an emphasizer, especially during transits when he passes his perihelion

* vague precognitions, which later turn out to be true, but were too unclear to grasp them clearly before, but there is always a tension

* slip of tongues, accidents due to mishaps, which are often funny (for others) besides of their tragic

* the danger of self-sabotage because the unconsciousness often takes over control
transits: confrontation with deficits, undeveloped/un-incarnated energies, to feel spured on something or driven to do something although the reason is not clear, a tendency to self-punishment (Phil Sedgwick)

* Darrelyn Gunzburg: "... Thus, in dealing with grief when Pholus is strong in a chart, there are always two options: blindness to the issue or visionary power; naivety and deception or access to sacred imaginal knowledge." (From her new article "The Centaurs and Grief", published in The Mountain Astrologer, issue Feb/Mar 2004)

From astro.com:

According to first astrological observations, Pholus gives unusual ability in a particular area, or unexpected results, due to a gift for experiment. Pholus' transits over the main axes of a chart, often mark radical and unexpected change, hinted at by his sudden and unexpected death in the myth.

From Wikepedia:

Pholous in Astrology

The Centaurs are increasingly used by astrologers. One theme of Pholus, according to the co-author of the first book on the subject, is "Small cause, big effect."

Pholus was the second Centaur discovered. It was due to this discovery that the planetary class was defined (Chiron and Phlolus were then grouped into the new class), and indeed, the discoveries proceeded very rapidly from there -- consistent with the archetypal nature of Pholus.

In 1992, there was another significant "second discovery" within a class of planets: that of the first planet beyond the Pluto-Charon binary system -- the as yet unnamed (15760) 1992 QB1. In other words, this was the year of the discovery of the Kuiper Belt, a vast region of space where millions of small planets reside.

Prior to the discovery of QB1, the Kuiper Belt had only been theorized, but with a second discovery, there was finally tangible evidence. As of this writing, there are more than 20 named bodies in both classes (Chiron and Kuiper objects), which together constitute a completely different Solar System cosmos than the ones that any prior generations of astrologers have encountered or even pondered.

In a sense, Pholus offered a "vague precognition" to the discovery of these realms, other keywords given by von Heeren. But when Pholus is involved, such vague perception often leads to concrete and tangible results. Something starts like a wispy notion (Neptune-styled) and then rapidly takes on form (Saturn-styled).

Given that Pholus's orbit crosses the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, with their revolutionary changes and compelling spiritual processes, as well as that of Saturn, the most traditional planet, you can be sure it carries a lot of energy wherever it goes, and can wear many masks.

At other times, the energy of Pholus feels like a pressure release, akin to shaking up a bottle of Pepsi on a hot day, and promptly opening it. It's just that the stuff keeps coming out. A genie coming out of a bottle is perhaps a better metaphor, but that, too, comes with the sense of materialization.

Pholus has a quality of opening the door to the infinite. Depending on the door, that may or may not be helpful, or seem helpful, but it is what it is and when Pholus has become active, it's necessary to get out of denial and work with the energy consciously.

Pholus has the property of release from situations, thus opening to new possibilities, and emerging into new states of existence. It is the Centaur of fast-moving changes, or rapid transformations, typically initiated by one's own action. Something as simple as curiosity or a chance encounter may start the chain of events.

One quality of Pholus experience is, "I would never have done that if I knew what I was getting into," sometimes with the added idea, "but I'm glad I did." A small gesture that leads to something large, a minor project that becomes one's life work, an experiment that takes on a life of its own, leading to many developments, all are properties of Pholus.

Pholus, von Heeren adds, is "the catalyst and provider for a landslide-like change (in history for example) and turning points," adding, "Pholus exaggerates energies in their raw state. Pholus is an emphasizer."

In some cases, Pholus activity represents or instigates situations in which something gets out and you can't get it back in, such as when riots begin and the government cannot stop them, or you make one change and it cascades into a series of other developments. This same quality also gives Phlous experiences the quality of a leap to a new level.

Another quality of Pholus is anything involving three generations, which relates to its mythology. Pholus was the keeper of a cask of wine given to him by Dionysys, which he had kept three generations, and which was the collective property of all the Centaurs. Wherever there is a question within an astrology counseling situation that may be multigenerational, no matter what the subject, the position of Pholus in the natal chart or transits at the time can offer insight and assistance.

Look for the influence of ancestors, issues and gripes to be taken up with ancestors, and one's relationship to predecessors of any kind. Pholus, in this respect, addresses issues that belong to the entire tribe, collective psychological property, and group responses to situations.

Pholus has a relationship to addictions and the healing of addictions, as well as their causes and consequences, which often have multigenerational and group causes and effects that may or may not include the actual substance itself -- but rather the effects of being raised under its influence, attitudes toward the substance, or attitudes passed from a grandparent.

Wow! More indications that Pholus is important indeed.

What an amazing opportunity we all have right now - to share in the process of researching all these new astrological planets, bodies, and asteroids. We have the opportunity to share our experiences of how these new planets, bodies, and asteroids affect us (in our natal chart, in synastry, in progression, and in transit) so that we can collectively interpret and define the meaning of them for astrology itself.
