While there are always threads on the ASC and how it impacts personality or seeing/meeting the world, I have begun to notice that I most often see mercury most clearly when I first meet someone. More than the ASC. The ASC is that indefinable instinct and body ego (I love that term bec it so well fits the ASC) and is less concrete than the way someone speaks and thinks which is more immediately apparent and is signified by the sign mercury is in. Aspects to mercury come into play in a major way here and will color things.

I would challenge people to look at the charts of those you know and see what you notice more when you talk to them. Mercury or the ASC.

Now that you mention it I'm thinking of the people I know and it's quite true! I know of one guy with merc in Cap and I know him pretty well so I don't think he's conservative but everybody else I know describes him as such. I never understood why.

Yes, definitely..Mercury shines when the person is actively communicating .. but the ASC is what is seen when observing a person who is not talking. If someone were to observe me in public..notice the way I dress, act, make eye contact, position myself in relation to others, etc (all that BODY EGO , as you said)..they would see Scorpio..but when they talk to me and interact they would see Sagittarius (my mercury)

I notice the moon first.

I think it's in the eyes. They always make me think of a certain sign.. and that sign usually ends up being the moon - not the sun or asc.

CoralFrequency,

Can you expand on the Moon Sign thing you mentioned?

(Edit - deleted some unnecessary and boring ramblings. The worst combo. )

In general, I don't think I first notice any one thing on a consistent basis. Sometimes I notice the planet that's strongest in the person's chart, even when it's not one associated with their big three. Usually I pick up on one of their strongest signs, but what they have in that sign varies.

Subconsciously I must be picking up on Mercury though. It certainly contributes to feelings of compatibility b/c almost all of the people I've immediately clicked with and gone on to become good friends with have a feminine Mercury, like me.

I actually don't guess a particular planet first ... however, I did notice that I guess the Moon more often than the Sun. And I am pretty good at spotting stelliums in a certain sign. One funny thing I noticed ... I have a strong tendency to always guess a planet (particularly the Sun or Moon) or the Ascendant to be in the sign OPPOSITE from where it is actually placed.

Interesting Point...

I just spent a few hours thinking back and i think you're onto something. I mean generally, I don't notice anything flat out, I get an array of "ideas" but Mercury really does color a person's expression in interesting ways.

For example:

My sister is a Double Gemini. Most people would probably guess because of how she looks anyway, pretty tall, lanky, interesting mouth, she looks kind of like Hermes himself . There's not one thing that's Taurean about her from first glance, except her appetite. However, the moment she opens her mouth it's not the quirky, chatty, Gemini that comes out but it's the slow, deliberate, Taurean Mercury that expresses itself. She hardly says anything unless it needs to be said, and when it's said it's cutting and straight to the point(Cutting because her Mercury is opposite Pluto and square Saturn). She doesn't appear inquisitive and lively as many Geminis do, but she seems serious, a bit of a loner, reserved, practical, and extremely realistic, to the extent where some think she's negative and a bit caustic.

I've noticed that those with Mercury in the same sign as their Sun seem to have expression or communication that "fits". You know how if you meet someone for the first time, and they communicate with you in a way you didn't expect. You didn't expect them to talk a certain way, or sound a certain way based off first impressions.

Another example:

I've got an Aries friend with a very fiery chart, and a Mars/Uranus conjunction opposing his Ascendant. I think he's a firecracker of a person, who lives to take risks, isn't afraid to go after what he wants, and can be quite bossy at times.

However, most people think he's a sensitive, shy, demure, and sweet soul who couldn't hurt a fly and needs protecting at all times because he can't defend himself. He's got Mercury in Pisces.

In defense of Pisceans, he's not weak at all. But I'll admit, he is extremely scattered. I still see the Aries determination and will yet, it doesn't seem very focused. And he tends to charge into wherever his head lands rather than a specific direction (like what he wants to achieve). He is a lot less self-serving than the Aries stereotype. It's there, but it's overshadowed by his overwhelming concern for others and by his determination to always be the "Nice guy". Even if he does finish last, often. (Which Arians hate, of course )

i havent ever tried to corelate astrology the first time i meet anyone.but once i get to know them the primary planetary influences do get pretty obvious.
for eg, my Pisces Asc. neptune opp sun n moon in cancer makes me an obvious Piscean. i even have curly hair
then theres this guy with a lot of pluto aspects.i never assumed him to be a scorpio moon or asc. i just assumed he has heavy pluto in his chart.
i suppose it will take a while before o learn to guess asc or moon correctly
