I was watching parts 1 and 2, on PBS two nights ago and it hit me (again) - i want to get information about my ancestors through geneology and dna HOWEVER, I don't know much beyond my father and his father but am itching to know more about that side of my family. my question is, has anyone had this done? how did they feel once they got the information? does anyone want to share their findings? i would LOVE to hear it. Not sure if this is much help to you but I have done family history research. It hasn't profoundly altered my sense of self, though it is fair to say that in some places in time and history you are going to come across some things that are upsetting. IP: Logged |

As An African American who hasn't done a search--because I was lucky enough to have grown up around relatives on both sides of my family...I'd say it will definitely be a "life changing" experience for you! Our history is so intriguing...with so many twists & turns...IP: Logged |

blue moon thanks for responding back. i understand that i may/will come across upsetting things. just watching african american lives - there were a few parts on there that upset me. what also was of interest, in the program, was the amount of african american's who were actually free before the civil war. i'm just really curious and at the point where i need to know. my mother's side is a little easier to find out since my grandparent's are alive and sound - I was also lucky enough to know my great grandmothers, my great uncles and aunts, and cousins. my father's side is a different and opposite story.i think i ran across a site - http://www.africanancestry.com/ and I'm going to check them out. It is inexpensive compared to the return which I consider invaluable. there is also www.ancestry.com, as well. I'm African American too BLKFox! It would be nice to know more about my ancestors and what they went through. Maybe see how I am like them. I am ready to do the search. At least I'll know more about my ancestors and I would like to start my own family one day - I don't have either one of my parent's around and would very much like to have something to pass down to my children and talk about with my mate, as far as family is concerned. I think it is VERY important to know where and who you came from and to carry on that legacy. p.s. i guess i'm not going to get too many replies on this topic. IP: Logged |
