Hi guys,

Saturn was the ruler of Aquas before Uranus was discovered. How do you Knowflakes feel about this match/mismatch?

All the time we can see Aquas being admired (or avoided) for their rebellious nature, they are constantly claimed to be the most freedom loving sign, independent individuals, eccentric etc, etc.

Saturn, on the other hand, is said to be the planet of restriction, limits, slow learning etc. Even the positive sides of the planet, maturity, wisdom through experience, patience are virtues not often immediately linked to Aquas.

However, I do believe there is some real wisdom behind the old rulerships, and I feel strongly about this Aqua/Saturn contradiction.

I mean, when we talk about Saturnian restriction, shouldn't we then also connect this restrictive nature in some way to Aquas? Or, when we talk about Aquas being so wonderfully (?) independent (something I disagree on, btw), shouldn't we also talk about Saturn in a much more inspirational light?

When talking about Aquas, people do in fact sometimes mention the restrictive (or fixed) nature of the sign. BUT when talking about Saturn the words inspirational, rebelious, independent are never mentioned.

My point is: if "the most negative planet" was chosen as the ruler of Aquas, why was that? Are Aquas actually much more negative than they are described to be OR is Saturn much more positive that we understand?

Aquarians can be very conservative, which may come from saturn influence. But Aqu is ruled by Uranus, this is the whacky side of things, that's probably what you are picking up on. Also, as we know, a sign can be ruled by more than one planet and that a planet can rule more than one sign and be manifested in different ways. In this case, Aqu is concerned with breaking down structure, Cap with building it. Thus, Aqu still revolves its life around structure - saturn.

I think Aquarians are highly structured creatures. For example, mercury in Aqu is highly logical, that must come I suspect from saturn. The wit and the light bulb effect is Uranus' effect. There is method in the madness, its just that others from other signs can't see it.

Also look at how Aqu looks. The sharp angularity in the face is Saturn; to a certain extent, Caps have it as well but maybe with not that big square jaw. The lightness of looks though (ie that absent minded look) is Uranus.

So I have to yet disagree on another post and say that I can see the relationship between signs and rulerships, dignities etc. We shouldn't be tearing these traditions just because we might personally not understand things.

If you draw a chart and put the traditional rulers in the houses it soon becomes clear why Saturn is the ancient ruler of both Capricorn and Aquarius.

But does it fit?

They're not nearly as unpredictable as they like to think. There is also that hypocritical thing does sometimes slip in ~ freedom for me, but I want to know what you are doing, and I will complain if you come across as too detached.

Thanks for your input :-)

I don't know if I made myself clear but I DO AGREE with the old rulerships (as well as the new ones).

What I don't agree on is the way people describe Aquas as mostly positive and Saturn as mostly negative. It is this contradiction of descriptions that bothers me. I do think there is definitely great wisdom behind the choice of the old rulerships.

Old rulership versus new rulership.

To me, old rulership are still important as an undercurrent, but the new rulership signals a shift in human consciousness, a potential that was previously hidden or held back.

In the case of Aquarius new ruler, I believe Uranus was discovered around the time of the American and French revolutions. That's when the idea that "all men are created equal" really began to make its way into human consciousness. Aquarius being the sign opposite Leo which is the sign of royalty, this new consciousness was directly opposing the premise of royalty itself, superiority due to lineage, bloodline or ordained by God. As long as Saturn was the sole ruler of Aquarius, this kind of consciousness was not possible.

The interesting thing is that in ancient mythology, Uranus was the father of Saturn, and Saturn castrated his father. So, it can be surmised that Aquarians contain in themselves the seed of their own destruction. That's why many anarchic revolutions usually fall short of expectations. And years later the old order is restored. The Aquarians that I know tend to become a little more sedated and conservative as they age.

"Aquarians contain in themselves the seed of their own destruction".

This is so true, Belage, so true...

My Aqua lives in his dream world and actively refuses to accept that the real world (of us other humans) doesn't run according to his dream...

While rebelious etc labels are given to Aquarius.. I believe they are still co-ruled by Saturn.. and that's why strange confusions are seen in their love life..
