I recently had a friend ask me about this "sun sign" and I had to admit I have never heard of it. I did a little research and I am kind of confused as to why it isn't used. Also, if some astrologers do use it, I'd like to learn if it's a fire, earth, air, water sign. Also, I'd like to know if it's ruled by any planet. Also, does it have a symbol? Nowhere have I been able to find any of this stuff. Did Linda use the Tropical Zodiac or the Sidereal Zodiac? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

According to the book i have, Ophiuchius the healer,or serpent bearer
starts 30th November to the 17th December,it's a Mutable water sign ruled by Jupiter and Pluto.
The symbol that's used in the book i have 'The 13 signs of the zodiac' by Walter Berg looks like the number 3 with an upward pointing arrow through it,which represents a staff with a serpent entwined around it.It is the same symbol used by many medical organisations.

If you do an search on the 'net you will find loads of stuff about it. On the bit below it was me that put "real" in inverted commas.

Now this is just my opinion, but many people in the modern world have trouble with the concept of a symbol. Astrology, being an ancient art, was around for the many centuries when people had a different view of the world and a different concept of reality.

Below is what actually appears in the sky, but as the article points out isn't what is used in either the Western Tropical zodiac or the Sidereal Zodiac. Personally, I can't see how it matters greatly. This isn't science. A chart isn't an actual thing (the paper it is printed on is though).

Why wasn't Ophiuchus ever used? I'm inclined to agree with the Startistics people that 12 signs went better with our solar calendar. Maybe there were subconcious and numerical reasons.

I discovered this a little while ago and have since switched to the astronomical zodiac as far as sun signs. I find it much more accurate. There is no need to look at the ASC or moon sign to get the basic energy.
I see a strong ophiuchus influence on those who are born bet nov 30 and dec 17. Chiron is the most natural ruler of the sign. Ophiuchus people are romantic and be very in touch with other people's pain. They tend to be interested in healing and have a knack for it.

Although the tropical zodiac may seem to get it right occasionally - its a matter of luck. When you have 3 major defining aspects, one will be in the ballpark. But there is no system as it totally lacks consistency. The tropical zodiac is based on an idea. Nothing actual.
I am considering doing away with houses and just looking at the 4 angles, quadrants, hemisphere emphasis and shape of the chart (bucket, splash, etc) which seems to tell alot about a person's emphasis in life more consistently than house placement.

Btw, as far as the elements go when there are 13 signs - one proposal is for ophiuchus to be a water sign. Libra - the balance sign which has no element associated with it - relates to all signs. Scorpio would become an air sign which sort of makes sense as it is very strategic and the least emotional of the water signs. Personally, I would dispense with the elements because I think they are somewhat arbitrary. I am a tropical aquarius but do not have any affinity for gemini or libra.

Using elements to explain why trines and sextiles are easy is convenient but falls apart when you look at other aspects like the novile which I have found to be very strong within 1 degree. It does not relate to any sign relationship yet it is as strong as a sextile. Same for the other minor aspects like the semisquare which is an important aspect but does not emerge from a sign to sign relationship.

Ultimately, the reason the aspects work has to do with harmonics - not sign to sign relationships. That is an artificial system built on the notion of 12 signs and a tropical zodiac as the signs occur by the seasons in the northern hemisphere. Pretty ego and geocentric if you ask me.
