So, as usual, my family has ganged up on me and they have once again told me how unstable my present job is, and have pretty much forced me to go back to school and finish my degree, which I DO NOT feel like doing.

I think my mother feels guilty about me not finishing my studies because she was the main reason why I quit in order to take of things at home when she went sick. I dealt with that and now I have a new lease on life. But now... the whole clan is forcing me to go back to school because "I am wasting my brains on some pipe dream".

Non-believers!

The idea is that I take my credits from my unfinished degree and use them to study something else because SORRY but I am NOT studying Engineering again! I was competent, even good at it, but I didn't like it. It is tedious and I am an artist and I can live the rest of my life without knowing about aerodynamics, Thank you!

I like music, but there is nothing to learn there for me. So, I was thinking of doing a Degree in Linguistics or Literature - these being things I am slightly interested in. Or, I could do Industrial Psychology, but I just know that I will never use these degrees after finishing them because all I desire to do is perform! I am so angry at the bunch of them right now.

Registration is from the 2nd of June to the 28th of June 2008. This is how long I have to decide.

My question is: Does my chart show me finishing this degree, or does it show me doing what I would like to do now, to just concentrate on my music! The thing is, if I start this degree, I am going all the way to a PHD, because I can't see myself being satisfied with a Bachelors or just Honours because my personality lends itself to doing things in which I am a specialist.

It will be a distance learning degree so I will be able to carry on with my music but the thought of the work and the performances, the recording, the marketing and all the things I do already... is already too much.

I think my family thinks I am just chilling having a good time because they do not see a music career as work, but it is work. I am p*issed, or disappointed in the lot of them. Just to spite them I am thinking of being an exotic dancer! Okay, maybe not but that would teach them to leave me be.

Here's my chart:

Hi Unmoved,

Transiting Uranus is moving toward a trine to your Moon. Your Moon rules your 9th house of Higher Education and your 10th house of career, so both issues are up right now.

Just to help you and your family bring this Uranian surprise down to earth, my suggestion would be to not force you to make a decision about something as important as higher education in only 2 days. Just to buy yourself some "Sanity Time" tell them that you will seriously consider it, but that they can hardly expect you to take them seriously when they tell you that you only have two days to register for classes. That is just panicked thinking on their part and it's causing you to panic as well.

If you tell them of your consideration, it will give all of you time to debate the merits of going back to school or give you time to let them know how competent you are in the music "Business" and that you are well aware that it is not just about being cool or living a rock and roll lifestyle. Let them know that you are a serious and competent business woman and an artist and that the time is ripe for you to accelerate your career as an artist. It's not something that you can just put off from time to time because it's art. It's a business with roots and wings.

Looking at transiting Uranus, it will not quite reach an exact trine to your Moon before it goes retrograde for several months. My thought is that you can talk some sense to your mother/family in the next two days or let them realize that they are asking you to do something very important in a very hasty and insane manner.

That transit can also suggest long distance travel for your career at some point which is what I know you've been hoping for. That's not a guarantee, but it's an option just like the higher education is an option. It is your life and you make the choices. Remember that. I already know you do.

Thanks Geo. Your words calmed me. Oh yes, my 9th and 10th Houses are Cancer Ruled, with my moon nicely perched there on the mid-heaven; so there is an internal struggle of career or higher learning going on from Uranus who is messing with water signs...

They are so manipulative though (my family), they pretty much said, "Choose any course, we'll pay for it for as long as it takes, and we'll pay for the apartment in any city." They have never offered such services when I was hustling and busting my ass for music. I've literally had to scrape on my own to make ends meat and now it's "money is no object!" I am getting gray hairs at 25 and they think I am living la vida loca! And all this comes up when things are looking hopeful a little. Nothing I do is ever right for these people!

I study, I get pulled out, not my sister. I'm out making it work and now this! I suppose I fail to see the parental care in this cr@p. You know I envy those kids who have their parents to manage their careers! Lindsay Lohan is a lucky girl.

ok, I ended up ranting. ut, if they think I am going to give up now, they have another thing coming. Sorry, but I have suffered too much to just throw it all away for a PHD.

As someone who works in the music business, albeit at a completely unfamous level, I would highly recommend that you go back to school and think about majoring in music. It will open up all sorts of career opportunities in music in case your career doesn't pan out the way you hope it will.

The problem quite often with the music business is that "making it" often has as much to do with luck as with talent and perserverance. Having a music degree in your corner not only can help, it can provide you with backup careers involving music.

If you really think you know all there is to know about music...well I thought that too, dropped out of college, and later discovered I didn't know half as much as I thought and ended up regretting it. I work in music now, not just gigging but giving lessons and such, but it took a lot longer and was a bigger struggle than if I had just finished college.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll shine no matter what you decide.

Thanks Isis. I know you are very well rounded music wise, more than I am. I know that what you say is true. A music degree probably makes more sense than any other degree I could ever do, but the family is against that because "what can you do with a music degree", they ask. But that could be the compromise we need i.e. I study if it is a music degree that I study toward. Yeah, a BMus definitely something worthwhile.

It's been a while isis, I hope you're well. And Thank you.

Your parents wonder what can you do with a music degree?

- elementary music teacher
- junior high or high-school band, choir, or orchestra directors
- college professors
- performing artists
- songwriters/composers
- musicologists
...as well as work in various fields of the music industry, including:
- audio engineering
- A&R Rep
- writing as a music critic
- managing bands
- working for record companies

There are plenty of great jobs to be had with a music degree.

Hi Unmoved,
in general, you should do, what you want. Don't let anyone to bring you from your way.
However, if they force you to study, history could be a good choice. Do you like history ? It's typical subject without too much stress.

Isis - Oh, they know, but it is not as prestigious as being a doctor or an engineer. My word. I would die of boredom. I like physics but that's where it ends. I hate biology. I find chemistry tedious, just like calculus and statistics. And just because I can draw doesn't mean that I want to draw blue prints!

Jan_A... I don't like History unfortunately, I would rather do commerce than history. I was thinking of doing archeology but then I was stumped for how I could use that constructively in my life. Part of my unfinished degree was doing law, and I couldn't stand the memorizing of cases with the piles of reading of monotonous "A vs B" blah blah, so Law is just not for me.

I am easily bored. I do need something that has a practical and current feel to it. So, I think music is it, or English Lit. Or music with some English modules in it(??) I dunno. I love languages, I love reading and writing and I love music. That's all I know right now.

added: Actually Isis- I could even do movie scores, which I have always wanted to do with a music degree. Huh...I think it was arrogant of me to say I know all I need to know about music because I wouldn't even be able to conduct a children's choir to be honest.

Okay... if I have to study... it seems like I am doing music, which means I am not likely to have any credits taken over from my Bsc Construction Management, but I'll see. It doesn't matter. I am a hard worker.

I think I'll apply in the US too, and just leave here and study somewhere else because I was given an option of ny city. They didn't specify the country...

Hee hee... Lemme go onto the net and see which school/university I can study in in the US. Ha! Then I kill two birds with one stone. They thought they had one over me. LOL

Unmoved,

You always come across as creative, strong and pretty "unmoved" or unfazed by life's stresses which is a good thing!

I totally hear where you are coming from... and l think music would be worth a shot! You could do your music and pretend that you are an exotic dancer to your family

Nothing worse than having a mind of your own and a good brain on your shoulders to then be restricted before you even start because your loving parents (whom l know only wish the best for you) have aspirations that just don't do it for you.

Follow your heart and your soul and get your brain to keep your mind out of it

The bets tip l can ever give anyone is to not allow your thoughts and mind-set to control you... don't be a slave to it. Don't let it drive you round and round a roundabout trying to convince you of what others think is best.

Allow stillness of mind and listen to your soul, girl!

I wish you the best of luck - you have all of everything within you, you just need to ask yourself the right questions for YOU to access limitless answers.

X Lara

I came back from NYC on Tuesday. As we landed the pilot said
"We have a special announcement. Our blonde hostess is leaving us to become an exotic dancer at Spearmint Rhino and this is her last flight".

LOL the entire plane just died laughing - the pilot was so cruel to put the poor hostess on the spot! Everyone wished her luck and starred at her as if they wore x-ray goggles as they dis-embarked!

Can you imagine her telling her mother? "Oh mum, i've left a great job at Virgin to become an exotic dancer for all my previous customers.

That's hilarious! Poor girl.

I have just spoken to my family and told them my idea and they say South Africa or nothing! *sigh* Now I have to think on how I can get around that. I am a good negotiator, but their argument is that it is more expensive to study in the US than here, and that was not part of the deal.

NYC... yeah... I was thinking UCLA too. I must just go and do my SAT's asap because they need that, and then think about the money later. I might get lucky and get a sponsor. Fat chance but yeah... this idea rings better to my soul than anything else.

I can pay for my own studies I suppose if I arrange to play gigs on contract somewhere for a salary, but what are the chances of that happening. That would be so much work!

Yeah, I am not going to stress too much about this, but... I need to study to get them off my back at least. You should have seen their faces when I mentioned the US. Sad and comical. They told me to get a quote and let them know if they can afford it.

It would mean that:

1. I study full time
2. I work part time
3. I work on my music also.

i think that's too much to chew! I can see tUranus coming for me. That's an erratic career life just thinking of it. Maybe I should do psychology which is apparently easier and has less hours. If it is a Bsc Psych, then can definitely use my credits to skip freshman year.

Or... I could look at scholarships, music scholarships, but that is unlikely because they usually reserve that for local students. I could just give them my album as my audition!

Okay, now i am panicking again.

Yep, I need a plan! A big plan!

You know what? It's Friday and I am going to relax. Geo is also right, I can't be expected to make a decision like this in a few days! I will call NYU on Monday or something. They seem nicer to foreign students from what I read.

Otherwise, I will probably study long distance from a South African institution but live elsewhere.

Are there any people who are clued up about this distance learning and living in a foreign country thing?

I have friends who are MUSICIANS and some of them make a Full time career of it too. One lady I know writes cowboy poetry and travels around Canada. Another person works in a music equipment store and does gigs at night - He has a friend who used to be a drummer for some Canadian band and he teaches people how to drum and do various music stuff.

I have friends who are karaoke show hosts and one lady even runs her own company - she is a musician and that is how she practices with her singing - she even helps those who have never got up and sang before....

Follow and do what you love is what I can say to you. If music is your passion, I figure this is where you need to be. Will you really be happy following how others THINK you SHOULD live your life? We each have our own paths to follow in life.

In regards to higher education, I'm not one for it so I don't have much to say about that. I have seen folks go out and get a degree or something and are unable to find work in their chosen field. I find credentials are handy when a person wants to be self employed.....you could maybe look into a music education as well - there should be lots of courses available.

(I STRONGLY SECOND WHAT ISIS had written - a valuable person in the industry to give awesome insights because that is the work they do.....)

That is my 2 cents worth.....Follow your passion and do what you love to do....

go for what is in your heart.

all the expectations of others and their limiting beliefs are confusing and sometimes it tricks you into believing you have to do things, compromise, to make a living or that you have to find something that fits within eveything else. find what makes your heart soar and everything else will fall into place. take some time to yourself and get away from them and find what is true in your own heart - when you think about doing it - living it - how does it make you feel.

you just need to believe in yourself. follow your heart. and the rest will happen - the universe will support you.
