I sometimes have a difficult time trying to figure out the significance of house rulership and how it impacts the chart as a whole. The following are my placements...

Ruler of the 1st (Mercury) in the 1st
Ruler of the 2nd (Mercury) in the 1st
Ruler of the 3rd (Moon) in the 12th
Ruler of the 4th (Sun) in the 2nd
Ruler of the 5th (Mercury) in the 1st
Ruler of the 6th (Venus) in the 2nd
Ruler of the 7th (Jupiter) in the 12th
Ruler of the 8th (Jupiter) in the 12th
Ruler of the 9th (Saturn) in the 3rd
Ruler of the 10th (Uranus) in the 6th
Ruler of the 11th (Neptune) in the 7th
Ruler of the 12th (Mars) in the 4th

So, in my case would I look at it as (for example) that Venus is brought into my house of values, therefore my values are Venusified? Or would it be that I value reltionships more than the average person? Or both?

What about the ruler of the 11th being in the 7th? How does this supposedly play out in my long term relationships?

What about the ruler of the 7th and 8th being in the 12th?? To me I believe that's manifested by the fact that every guy I've ever been in love with either has Neptune conjunct the Ascendant, a Pisces Ascendant or, with one guy who I just really loved a lot, his 12th house was packed.

I totally understand the Mercury ones I think.

Any help in deciphering this would be graciously accepted

***PS. I started thinking about this since my most recent ex-bf has his rulers of the 1st to 6th houses in the 12th and it was sooooo indicative of how evasive and closed in he was....a man-island....got me thinking about this topic again.****

Maira ~

Thanks so much for the link. I've actually read them before. There are not too many interpretations that apply to me and the little two line blurbs towards the bottom seem pretty depressing and fatalistic so I've typically ignored them in the past.

For example: Ruler of the Seventh House is in the Twelfth House: Often means separation or divorce. Illness caused through an unsuccessful lawsuit. Loneliness.

OR

Ruler of the Eighth House is in the Twelfth House: A lonely death. Ending of life in a clinic, hospital, or nursing home.

Pretty depressing and, let's face it, there have to be more realistic (and ideally positive!!) examples of what it signifies. I suppose I could guess at them, but I was hoping people mught add their own interpretations based on their own charts and observations.

As far as your chart goes Maira, what have you noticed that seems directly linked to house rulership??

LOVE, you wrote: "I was hoping people mught add their own interpretations based on their own charts and observations."

Here are mine:

Ruler of 1st (Pluto) in 10th: Yes, I do identify strongly with my professional life and I can only be happy and feel free if I can express myself as a self-employed person. I put my whole being into my "public persona", it is closely intertwined - and I can never completely "switch off" from my work or exclude my personal(ity) needs from what I am doing. (Some call it vanity or egocentric - maybe they're right?;_))

Ruler of 2nd (Jupiter) in 11th: Not so sure about that ... 2nd house cusp is in 29° Sagittarius, so a very exxagerated Jupiter-energy here (29th dg is intense). I might be a bit too generous and carefree and spontaneous with my financial assets ... NOT AT ALL a planner in this regard, sometimes plainly childish and irresponsible.

Ruler of 3rd (Uranus) in 10th: Again a certain amount of excentricity and freedom to roam (at least mentally) necessary in my job - and I tend to have fleeting friendships/contacts, only very (!) few friends of long standing. Also, I moved quite often, sometimes - especially in my twenties - due to my profession. I changed my employers/customerss everal times as well. I make only temporary agreements, so to speak.

Ruler of 4th (Neptune) in 1st: Hm ... also a tough nut to crack. Or maybe not ... I guess I am quite "intuitve" - but Neptune is cj. my ASC in Scorpio, so I manage to hide my sensitivity if it is necessary (Scorpio-trait). But ... not always. I tend to take things personal (4th house matters are the most intimate ones, they say ... and this comes out in my 1st house if conscious identity...Not always comfrotable, and sometimes people can "see thorugh me" more than I like)

Ruler of 5th (Mars) in 8th: What can I say about this??? I'm a lover, not a fighter. ;-) I do like friendly competition (mentally or via game playing) as a means of flirting, for instance.

Ruler of 6th (Venus) in 9th: Yes, a strong intellectual/mental approach to matters of the heart. I am "working" on my relationship, invest a lot into them - and can be a dedicated partner who is willing to give up many things for the right partner. (Although one has to crack my stubbornness and caution first, 6th house cusp is in Taurus/Venus in Virgo) Also dealing with arts/aesthetics in my job and studies. Writing, and so on.

Ruler of 7th (Venus) in 9th: If I couple up with someone (7th house), I want to share mental adevntures (9th)as well. I need to feel free, mentally and emotionally unrestricted - and I grant taht to my partner as well (not everyone knows how to appreciate that, btw.) I go for authenticity/honesty - VERY important to me. No pettiness please! Apart from that I recognized that I had a few crushes/relationships on foreign guys already ... without actively seeking them out. (My latest love, long distance, came from another country and I had almost migrated there!)

Ruler of 8th (Mercury) in 8th: Yes! If I do couple up/merge with someone, I want to go to the depths. No pettiness, no false politeness, but mental and emotional bravery - plain talking, free of any "taboo"-feelings - that's what I crave. Apart from that, I can be turned on by mind games very much (sometimes to my own detriment)

Ruler of 9th (Sun) in 8th: A seeker of truth - and I often chose the draining/digging deep way to find it. Fascinated by the mysteries of the human soul, obsessed with attaining "wisdom" ;-) - and NOT AT ALL intersted in being "liked" or "fashionable" in what I think or say - I'd rather go for the truth, (as I see it, of course, haha.) Even if that turns some people off. Not very diplomatic ... Harsh sometimes.

Ruler of 10th (Mercury) in 8th: That's the way I am working, too: With my mind, with words, the "digging", sometimes "broddign§ type. I am able to immerse myself into my work completely - but only if I there is an absolute "meaning" for me! Otherwise I don't function so well...

Ruler of 11th (Venus) in 9th: My friends must be bright, witty, entertaining and must challenge me mentally in a way. A certain amount of fickleness ... I am not as "reliable" in practical ways as some of friends would want me to be. I have erratic tendencies ... But I am mentally sincere! I also tend to have extremely (!) high hopes on love. Often, I fall prey to my own excessive idealism - and I have been disappointed in that regard several times, in love as well as in friendships. I tend to see the best in other people first, and I don't seem to learn ... Optimism - which I like.

Ruler of 12th (Pluto) in 10th: Well ... I tend to bring my inner psycho-demons out in the open, haha. Which CAN torment the people around me - which gives my work a certain quality ... but which also unnerves some people that prefer a more discreet approach. (I can understand these people too well - but each of us has to act out his/her own astral obligations, right;-))

I am also curious to read more about other people's stories with their house-rulers! ;-)

Ruler of the 1st House in the 8th House

You are a person who readily sees that there is more to any person or situation than meets the eye. You are somewhat reserved, not fond of "posing", and you have a distinct disdain for all that is superficial. You have a mysterious, private, or sensual aura around you. You are not one to show off, and you seem to be content to be left alone--at least that's what others seem to read. Psychology appeals to you, you are generally quite hard-working, and you may spend much of your time researching and "digging". Sometimes this indicates an inheritance that transforms the life, or handling other people's money.

This is totally true of me.

Ruler of the 2nd House in the 9th House

Your income depends to a large extent on the relationship you may have with other countries. You can earn money in foreign trade, import and export, travel, tourism, or a liberal profession, science, philosophy or religion, or teaching in a university.

Not at all true.

Ruler of the 7th House in the 5th House

A spirit of fun, romance, and playfulness is important to you when it comes to your close relationships. You tend to depend upon a companion to stimulate your own creativity or to bring out your "inner child". You are unlikely to marry for any other reason but love, as there is an idealistic and romantic side to you. This sometimes indicates that you look for a creative and expressive partner, or that you partner with someone in a creative endeavor on a professional level. You tend to seek a companion who enjoys similar diversions and hobbies as you do. You are quite dependent on the encouragement of your partner, and you thrive on attention from a companion. You are threatened by a person who is detached or impersonal. A relationship that is playful, reassuring, and encouraging is most attractive to you. You feed on the emotional energy of a partnership, deriving confidence from your association. You may be "in love with love", and you tend to approach any new association with a fresh and idealistic attitude.

I do look for those qualities in a partner.

Ruler of 10th house in 12th house

Your professional success is related to your ability to serve others behind the scenes. Your profession is likely to be performed behind closed doors or in private. This position favors professions that require power behind the throne; that is to say that you make suggestions or decisions without conferring with the public. Activities linked to secret information, medicine or investigations would be very favorable.

I'm not saying if this is true.

I wish they'd finish and add the other houses...

Hi Love,
the two-liners are excerpted from an older book, it's the way classic astrology was, fatalistic and often pessimistic.

Modern astrology is more humanistic and more willing to nuance the interpretations.(english is not my native language as you can see ) It incorporates spiritual evolution, for example a t-square in a chart was bad, bad, bad in ancient astrology, now they tell us t-sq are opportunities to grow.

My intuition tells me that however fatalistic ancient astrology may seem, it does have a point BUT people started using thier free will more, and we are also more evolved (people used to kill each other at the drop of a hat).

As for the house rulers in the houses, i've got a bunch in my 7th, and the interps are contradicting, I say once again go with the gut instinct.

I would like to know the meaning of the 10th in 8th, making a living out of other people's money? Having sex for a living, no, not me lol. Time will tell

Hugs,
maira.

Oh, and I suppose you kind of "grow" into your chart, it's about what makes you feel good.

For instance, I have ruler of my 8th in my 7th, and I tried and failed to have only sexual relationships (5th ruled by aqua , I think people who can have sex without the complications are far better off, especially during that time when you simply don't have the time or energy to find that special someone... but no, I can't, i feel depressed and used if the "relationship" doesn't exist)

Ruler of my 6th in 3rd, i do work in something that has to do with daily communication, but the said ruler is Neptune, and I get a little foggy sometimes I also complain about the work conditions to anybody who listens and I've got two pisces co-workers that have seen me cry more than once.
I was descibing what I feel about it, the one liner says ill-health of those around the native; domestic troubles, lol.

This was good actually:

Ruler of the 1st House in the 10th House

You have a strong need for recognition that can be a driving force in your life. You are usually ready to take charge, and you are fond of structure. You readily take responsibility for yourself and for others. Some people with this position "hide" behind a position, such as a job, social standing, or reputation; or, they are especially fond of letting others know their position in life. Certainly, you come across as strong.

...Er, that planet is Pluto (or should that be Plutoid?), there's probably a lot of truth in the strong comment.

Ruler of the 2nd House in the 1st House

The anxiety about earning your own money already was generated in your youth, probably by your family upbringing. Your financial income is directly related to your own effort, to the expression of your talents and to the utilization of your physical body.

........ at the age of 12 my Dad told me to get a job, I was too old for pocket money my mother still lives in WWII and doesn't waste anything, not much gets thrown out here either, it mainly goes to be reused somewhere in some capacity

Ruler of the 7th in the 7th

Ruler of the 10th in the 7th

*yawn* the housewife's house again

"master of compromise" ~ never a truer word but sometimes the limit gets crossed.

First (Mercury) in 9th
Second (Moon) in 5th
Third (Sun) in 9th
Fourth (Mercury) in 9th
Fifth (Venus) in 10th
Sixth (Pluto) in 5th
Seventh (Jupiter) in 11th
Eight (Saturn) in 7th
Ninth (Uranus) in 7th
Tenth (Neptune) in 7th
Eleventh (Mars) in 6th
Twelfth (Venus) in 10th

I thought this was interesting: Ruler of the First House is in the Ninth House
Long journeys; union with a foreigner; death in a foreign country.

DEATH IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY!!

Ruler of the Third House is in the Ninth House
Change of residence towards middle age; traveling to acquire knowledge.

Maybe I'll move to France or something when I'm 40 and then NEVER COME BACK TO AMERICA.

Ruler of the Fourth House is in the Ninth House
Property situated elsewhere than in the native's place of birth.

A HOUSE IN EUROPE MAYBE?

Okay now and the rest are depressing because it says that one of my children will be ill, I will have an unhappy marriage, there will be sorrow caused by the loss of a loved one... but I will have a wealthy marriage? Hmmm.

Thanks for the link cooljen, very good descriptions.

I was right: "Ruler of the Eighth House in the Seventh House - You feel intensely about close relationships and you just might be someone who also feels strongly about confining your sex life to the marriage state exclusively."
Why me?

My other houses :
Ruler of 1st in 7
Ruler of 2nd in 1
Ruler of 3rd in 12
Ruler of 4th in 12
Ruler of 5th in 2
Ruler of 6th in 3
Ruler of 7th in 7
Ruler of 8th in 7
Ruler of 9th in 6
Ruler of 10th in 8
Ruler of 11th in 7
Ruler of 12 in 6

Yeap, "housewife" alright lol. Also, over-simplifying, making money on my own, perhaps with something to do with my psysical appeareance (which I do). Communicating is confined (3-12), family life also.

Um 5th in 2nd, dating people with money?And/or having children increases self worth?

9th in 6th maybe getting ones higher education form the people you meet everyday at work?

Finally, ruler of the 12th in 6th (virgo-pisces), figures, I'm hypocondriac, and also getting ill for real if I don't feel well emotionally.

Love, I have this also: "What about the ruler of the 11th being in the 7th? How does this supposedly play out in my long term relationships?"

I think it's about your hopes and dreams which are linked to close parterships, maybe dreaming of getting married, or finding furfillment when you do. I'm speculating

Wow! Thanks for all your responses you guys

I really think this topic is pretty interesting, both natally and in terms of synastry as well.

cooljen ~ Thanks for that link. It was a little more upbeat than the cafeastrology one...

maira ~ I wondered if 11th in 7th might mean that there was some kind of link between close partnerships and friends. One thing that has appeared thematically in my life is that ex-boyfriends almost always want to stay friends with me. I had a psychic say to me once "Boy! You really know how to turn a romantic relationship into a friendship!" I was not amused. My least favourite thing is hearing "let's be friends" with someone I'm crazy about, but I suppose I should try to take it as a compliment. (Grrrrr...)

Another interesting thing to do is to have a look at the house rulership in your Draconic chart. I found it tobe just as accurate as the natal interpretations.

Yup -- i did not liked the fatalistic ones though:

Ruler of the Ninth House is in the Twelfth House
Sorrow caused through vexatious matters. Illness incurred in a foreign country.

Ruler of the Eighth House is in the Eleventh House
Death of the partner, which either jeopardises or else establishes the native's worldly position.

Ruler of the Sixth House is in the Third House
Ill-health of those around the native; domestic troubles.

mY BF has

Ruler of the Sixth House is in the Fourth House
Illness in the home, affecting either the native, the wife, or those with whom the native lives

Hmmmi prefer the regular analysis than this ones ..
