How would this disorder manifest in the natal chart/transits/progressions.

quote:
Dysthymia is a mood disorder that falls within the depression spectrum. It is considered a chronic depression, but with less severity than a major depression. This disorder tends to be a chronic, long-lasting illness.

Symptoms
The symptoms of dysthymia are similar to those of major depression, though they tend to be less intense. In both conditions, a person can have a low or irritable mood, lack of interest in things most people find enjoyable, and a loss of energy. Appetite and weight can be increased or decreased. The person may sleep too much or have trouble sleeping. He or she may have difficulty concentrating. The person may be indecisive and pessimistic and have a poor self-image. The symptoms can grow into a full blown episode of major depression. This situation is sometimes called "double depression"[2] because the intense episode exists with the usual feelings of low mood. People with dysthymia have a greater-than-average chance of developing major depression. While major depression often occurs in episodes, dysthymia is more constant, lasting for long periods, sometimes beginning in childhood, as a result a person with dysthymia tends to believe that depression is a part of his or her character. The person with dysthymia may not even think to talk about this depression with doctors, family members or friends. Dysthymia, like major depression, tends to run in families. It is two to three times more common in women than in men. Some people with dysthymia experienced a major loss in childhood, such as death of a parent. Others describe being under chronic stress. It is often difficult to tell whether people with dysthymia are under more stress than other people or if the dysthymia causes them to perceive more stress than others.

Saturn is often a key to depression,
especially any Saturn-Moon contacts.

But I would first rule-out any dietary imbalances.

American doctors are particularly ignorant of nutritional deficiencies.
Its such a part of the culture, and they arent taught it in med school.
The prescribing of anti-depressants is a major industry in America,
and doctors tend to prescribe the drugs whose companies give them kick-backs.
Some doctors realize how unethical this is, while others are totally ignorant.
We are really in a dark ages as far as the medical industry is concerned.

Just before certain medications became available,
there were major discoveries in the field of nutrition.
Healthy diets and lifestyles were shown to cure even so-called incurable diseases.
Dr. Linus Pauling won a Nobel Prize for his research into the benefits of Vitamin C.
Almost overnight, the food industry and medical industry caught the threat,
and, since that time, we've seen developments in advertising propaganda,
in artificial additives and preservatives, and various medications,
but a corresponding lack of development in the field of nutrition.
The FDA, whose job it is to unmask these atrocities,
is itself merely a criminal organization in disguise,
acting to cover-up relavent information, and misinform the public.

We've all been programmed by the media to accept certain propositions about medicine.

This is a good place to start deprogramming yourself:

I second that

I have a diagnosis of Dysthymic Disorder from 2004. I have a long history of depression, and it runs in my family

My indicator is my Moon in Pisces in 6th square the opposition of retrograde Saturn in Gemini in 9th and Jupiter-Neptune in Sagittarius in 3rd. I also have Moon oppose Saturn/Neptune midpoint too.

other indicators are my Saturn contraparallel Mercury-Venus-Neptune parallel.

I have Sun in Scorpio in 2nd quincunx Saturn

I feel that my depression stems more from insecurity and low self esteem stemming from my special education past, learning disabilities, and my past abuse by my parents especially my mother who also has a history of mental health problems. Mental health problems run in families whether its nature or nurture or both.

A strong connection between depression and learning disabilities is common knowledge.
That's why I stress that mental health professionals need to look into possibile learning disabilities especially if their patients have insecurity that involves feeling that they are stupid.

There are many things that can be linked to Depression like serious health problems, neurological disorders(especially degenerative neurological conditions),vestibular disorders, abuse, vitamin deficiencies, hormone imbalances(testosterone used to be used as antidepressant for males),allergies(antihistamines used to be used as antidepressants)painful relationship breakups, death in a family, unemployment, mistreatment, oppression and stress is a big one. Also Depression and Anxiety disorders are connected. Many people with depression have anxiety and vice versa. I have a diagnosis of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, but I also feel a lot of my anxiety is social anxiety as I am very shy. A part of that is feeling that I am unattractive.

like I said, insecurity/low self esteem can factor into depression and anxiety disorders.

I feel that highly sensitive people who have a history of trauma, abuse are at high risk for depression and anxiety...of course, I am a highly sensitive person. Dr. Elaine Aron talked about that in her books on highly sensitive people. Both high sensitivity and learning disabilities run in my family. Learning Disabled tend to be highly sensitive people.

Of course, substance abuse is common in people with mental health problems. Substance abuse runs in my family too. I don't have a history of it myself, and I intend to keep it that way.

there are many possible astrological indicators for depression, but they don't have to actually be depression. They could indicate other things that fit with the planetary symbolisms.

There are the intepretations for the aspects from Cosmobiology Health Report program - a report extension for Kepler Astrology program. I got the medical astrology program back in 2003.
It includes mainly the hard aspects and midpoints. Those are often looked at for health problems.

My indicators for depression and related stuff:

Moon Square Saturn:

There is a tendency to hardening of the lymph nodes, tonsils and spleen. You could be
subject to disturbances of the fluid balance and bladder complaints. This aspect also could bring periods of melancholy or depression and psychical or hereditary ailments.

Moon Opposition Saturn/Neptune Orb:0 Deg 17 Min

You tend to be a bit melancholic, are prone to manic depression and in some cases
suicide. Your illnesses could come through emotional suffering. There is potential for
repeated or chronic disease of the lymphatic system, polyps and cysts. For women there is
a tendency to female diseases.

Mars Opposition Mercury/Saturn Orb:0 Deg 50 Min

There is a tendency towards slow development and possible stuttering or muteness because of fear of speech. You are inclined to feel depressed frequently and could be subject to chronic nervous ailments.

Saturn Opposition Jupiter/Neptune Orb:0 Deg 05 Min

You could have potential disorders in your metabolic system and may be susceptible to liver, gall or lung diseases, blood disorders and circulatory problems. You tend to get depressed easily, may lack appetite which could lead to emaciation or because of grief or worry you may go on eating binges and put on weight. There also is a tendency toward hypochondria.

Jupiter Opposition Saturn/MC Orb:0 Deg 06 Min

You tend to vacillate between feeling fairly well at times and at other times may become discontent which could lead to ailments caused by emotional distress.

Uranus Opposition Mars/Saturn Orb:0 Deg 13 Min

You have a potential for straining, tearing and cramping your muscles. There is an inclination to sudden illness, severe injury or accidents requiring surgery with the possibility of losing an arm or a leg. There also is a tendency to suicide with sharp objects, weapons or vehicles.

Aspects of depression:

-the Sun or Moon conjunct, square or opposing Saturn or Pluto

-Mars conjunct, square or opposing Saturn or Pluto

-Saturn in the 4th, 8th, or 12th houses.

-Venus conjunct, square or opposing Saturn are notorious for depression. They feel lonely and feel that they had a deprived childhood. Some of them feel unloved and isolated.

I have moon square pluto and venus square saturn, and lots of water in my chart, so I get depressed easily, but it doesn't last a long time, but occurs frequently. But mostly, I suffer from anxiety. I think what Glaucus said is very true, about low self esteem, etc. I have a low self esteem. I never had trouble in school, but still I feel like I'm not smart enough, pretty enough, interesting enough, etc.
