Of course the "big 3" helps but I personally look at MC, aspects to MC, where the ruler of the MC is an its aspects, planets in 10th; 6th house cusp and planets in it and ruler of 6th; repeat with 2nd house. NN too is good to use as it deals with the path you should be trying to aim for.

I use 6th house as it is to do with how the person serves and 2nd because its what the person values/possessions.
