I thought this was interesting -"Understanding the Birth Chart - A Comprehensive Guide to Classical Interpretation" by Kevin Burk, page 218: quote: In particular, when two planets are both conjunct and parallel to each other, then the faster-moving planet completely eclipses the slower-moving planet, an event known as an "occultation". Solar eclipses are simply occultations of the Sun and Moon - the Sun and Moon are both parallel and conjunct...Occultations are extremely powerful conjunctions. They are somewhat rare, but worth noting when they do occur.
Well I have one occultation, my merc is conj my sun (is combust but not kazimi) and parallel. I also have this in synastry with someone as well - jupiter/venus, hmmm, sounds nice Do you have any in your chart or in synastry?

Yup...Sun/Saturn Jupiter/MC (If you're counting angles) The other Sun conjunctions are contraparallels.

How can you tell if a planet is parallel?Sorry if this is a stupid question. IP: Logged |

Yes! Ironically enough, it really hit me just yesterday how I think it manifests.I'm a bit of a contradiction...social butterfly in some aspects. But with the Saturn conj sun (Sun in my 5th/Saturn in 6th) I almost always have a sense of being misplaced somehow. Like I'm "just passing through" or only a visitor in my life scenarios. Kind of detached in some ways. Not enjoying things to their fullest without some guilt. And I'm SO used to feeling like that all of the time, that I only just recognized it completely during my little epiphany. There are some circumstances/friends that seem to ease that up a lot, but they are few and far between. It's almost a feeling like no one gets you completely...so when someone actually does, it's intense. The 6th house Saturn also seems to attract business partners who drop the ball and flake when I'm very serious about something. HATE that. Chiron is also conjunct these two, but like I mentioned, is contraparallel. 8th IP: Logged |

Lady,Go onto Astro.com. Pull up your natal chart. Click on the extended chart selection button in the upper left. Look at your declinations for parallels. 8th IP: Logged |

LadyNeptune - you should use about a 2-3 degree orb for parallels and contraparallels. Parallels are when two planets are both north and within 2-3 degrees of each other. Contra-parallels is when one planet is south and one is north, again 2-3 degree orb. Parallels on their own act like weak conjunctions, contraparallels like weak oppositions. Two planets can have no aspect (eg trine, conj etc) and still be contraparallel or parallel if the degrees are within range for its declination. IP: Logged |

I have this with: Sun-Neptune Mercury-Uranus Mars-Jupiter For me, I don't think the faster-moving planets eclipse the slower ones. I find the opposite much more the case! Edit - Are they using "eclipse" metaphorically, as in overpowers? That's what I thought they meant, but I'm an astronomical dummy so maybe they were using that literally, instead. I thought they meant Mars, for example, overpowers Jupiter, which isn't the case for me. Yeah, I'm reading that quote again and am thinking they definitely meant "eclipse" literally. IP: Logged |

No eclipse literally. An eclipse is when two planets are both conj and parallel. That's my understanding. IP: Logged |

23,I thought for parallels and contras that you should only use a 1.2 degree orb? I know I picked that up from Magi, but I've heard others say that as well? 8th IP: Logged |

My synastry with Jude Law is bursting with occultations. As a matter of fact, his was the first chart I checked, after having heard of parallels / contraparallels, and after having looked at our synastry, I thought that a conjunction almost always is accompanied by a parallel. IP: Logged |

no a conjunct does not at all mean a parallel! I have a lot of conjuncts/parallels with a guy... but that story is for another thread IP: Logged |

So what does it mean?I have the Sun conjunct and parallel Uranus. So, okay, this is an eclipse of Uranus by the Sun... But what does it mean? Other than "extremely powerful"?

I've heard than parallels and contraparallels must be within 1 degree of exact in order to be valid. These are my parallel aspects (all within 1 degree): Sun/Moon Sun/Uranus Moon/Uranus Venus/Ascendant Mars/Ascendant Neptune/Ascendant Venus/Mars Venus/Neptune Mars/Neptune

Yes, most websites say 1-1.5 degrees re orbs. Oh well, I lose my parallel between my sun and merc. Probably a good thing really. http://astrologysoftware.com/cg/matrix.dll?Tran sID=08190816420161740582&p=na2&sql=E3&name=Occultation&orig=&tranid=&newlook=yes quote: Occultation- [Astro*Index] Partial or complete blocking of the light from one body by the passage of another body (particularly the Moon or a planet) in front of it. This refers to the same type of phenomena as an eclipse. [Distinguish from eclipse] From precise timings by different observers (almost exclusively amateur astronomers), a wide variety of information about celestial objects can be determined, including: planetary atmospheres, coordinates of distant radio sources, dimensions of objects with extended disks, radio and X-ray objects, and the heights of lunar mountains lying near the limb of the Moon. See also: - Eclipse - Limb Occultation- [Munkasey M.] The blocking of the light as sent from a body to anobserver by the passage of another body in front of it. See also: "Eclipse". The term "Eclipse" is used when referring to interactions among the Earth, Sun and Moon, whereas the term "Occultation" is used when the Earth and any two other bodies are interacting. Occultation- [Devore] When a planet or star is hidden or eclipsed by another body, particularly by the Moon, there results what is termed an occultation. See also: - Eclipse - Limb

The phenomenon is termed occultation to distinguish it from eclipses. An occultation is equal to a powerful total or partile conjunction. A parallel must be within the same degree. A trine at 2-3 degrees is just a trine. A trine within the same degree is parallel. Otherwise, parallels could potentially be in many places, and more than 1 degree is far too loose of a standard to attribute to an aspect as significant as a parallel. IP: Logged |

OK, within a degree then EDIT - makes sense given that it is an equivalent to a partile conjunction (conj within 1 deg) IP: Logged |

I actually read somewhere that the higher you go up in the declination (towards 20° S / N) the tighter the orb should be, about some minutes only, and that at the equator the orb could be even a bit over 1°. Don`t know if this is true, Just read it.I`ll be comfortble with a 1° orb though. IP: Logged |
