I dont understand how is it different from the progressions?

With the solar arc (called "direction") you move every planet forwards with the motion of the sun, the solar arc, which is approximately 1° (not exactly though).

You can actually do a solar arc progression / direction on astro.com.
The nice thing about those is the fact that you`re outer planets are moving much more than in the progression.
Also, the aspects will be the same as in your natal chart, as you move every planet the same number of degrees.

For example:

My personal solar arc is 34°20 for this year (actually the solar arc sun and progressed sun are ALWAYS on the same degree and minute).
And now I move all planets 34°20 forwards.
