I've often wondered about this myself and I can only use logic to explain things. When things conj or make aspects to our angles, we register it as a legitimate aspect. We take note of them because they are to do with "major" things in our life, that is, ourselves (1st or ASC), our home and family (4th or IC), our relationships (7th or DC) and our future direction/public reputation (10th or MC). A common example is exact oppositions between ASCs in partners of points touching.
The other cusps tend to be ignored a bit because they aren't angular. However, I do seem to think that maybe an aspect to a non-angular cusp would have some impact just like an angular cusp, logic says so. So in your case, you would have opposing love styles but they are complementary. You also have opposing friendship styles, but again, they are complementary.
