I met someone and we were good together, though circumstances make it almost impossible so he ended it abruptly after about a month. I wonder If I should email him and let him know that I am no longer in Italy and have returned home. I still feel for him deeply and would love to continue a friendship with him though not sure how he feels.
any help ( insight ) appreciated.

I don't see what harm an email would cause, especially if it eases your mind.
