Hi!

I have a few days off and i was wondering if anyone could help me learn the basics of reading a horary chart.

So far i understand that...

The asc is represented by the person asking the question, so me.

The sun is the other person

So if iam asking a question about work.... I would be represented by the 6h house?

And if i was asking a question about my home or home life it would be represented by the 4th house

Romance/ men currently interested in would be the 7th

Flirtations is the 5th house

The moon always represents the emotions of the situation or someone else?

Thats all i got so far lol....

Pregnancy? Marriage? Health? Enemies?

The Sun doesn't represent the other person!
You have to look to the house ruler for the other person, depending on who that person is.
For example, a romantic partner, DSC ruler.
Mother - 10th house ruler (or 4th.. this is tricky, depends on things)
Father - 4th house ruler (or 10th)
Hidden enemy - 12th house ruler
Etc.

Now, yes, you are represented by the ASC, and the Moon is your co-significator (unless it rules the other person) and it also points to the outcome of the situation. If the last aspects it makes before leaving its sign are positive ones, the outcome is likely to be good even though the answer to your question is not what you'd like to hear. And it goes the other way round too, if the answer is positive but the Moon is afflicted, it means some issues are on your way.

Hope this helps some!

I'm not very good at Horary but those are the things I (think I) know! =)

Well, the sun is only the other person if that person is a man, especially and older man, not a child. Just as Venus is always a secondary ruler for a woman. Moon can also signify a woman.

The AC is always you, the moon is always the co-ruler of the person asking the question unless the other person or thing is ruled by Cancer.

The main significators are the AC and the ruler of the cusp of the "other". The "other" depends on what you are talking about. You have to choose the house based on what you are asking about (and the meaning to the asker).

Some examples (there is much more):
Self or your country: 1
Money or lost item: 2
Neighborhood, short trips or communication: 3
Present home, garden, father:4
Children or love affair:5
Coworker or health:6
Other person (relationship/partner in business, etc...) or possible new residence:7
Sex, death, intense feelings or the other person's money:8
School, foreign travel, spirituality:9
Career, boss, mother: 10
Friends, humanity, hopes/wishes:11
Prison, sorrow, hidden enemies:12

There are a lot of strictures you need to learn. You can search HORARY STRICTURES online and there will be lists and explanations. Two common strictures are AC between 27-3* on the cusp of two signs, which often mean that the question is asked either too late or too early. I generally read anyway just keeping this in consideration. Another stricture is Saturn in H1 or H7 meaning that you are not going to be able to read the chart yourself, there will either be delay or obstacles... but again, I read it anyway and keep this in consideration. There are many other things to consider.

Applying aspects mean future, separating aspects mean past. You can see an A or an S under the number on the aspect grid of the chart right beside the aspect glyph.

Trines and sextiles are positive and generally indicate smooth sailing or 'yes', squares mean challenge and obstacles, oppositions mean separation or break. Squares and oppositions generally mean 'no'. Conjunctions depend on the nature of what is going on but seem to generally mean something positive. They often indicated a willingness to come together on the issue, some sort of cooperation, especially if the are applying mutually. No aspects mean no action (neg) or nothing to worry about (pos).

Position of the moon often indicates where the main concern for the asker is.

Horary is based on traditional astrology so the significators for the signs are:
Aries and Scorpio are Mars
Taurus and Libra are Venus
Gemini and Virgo are Mercury
Cancer is the Moon
Leo is the Sun
Sagittarius and Pisces are Jupiter
Capricorn and Aquarius are Saturn

If you want to add the modern planets:
Uranus co-rules Aquarius
Neptune co-rules Pisces
Pluto co-rules Scorpio

The aspects of the moon while in its sign show the general events happening.

Well there is so much more than that to consider but those are the basics that have come to mind. So now you can have a look at a chart and practice.

Here's a chart I'm working on if you want to practice:

I didn't say in the question but I am female, the employer is male, his assistants who would contact me have all been female in the past. I haven't really looked at this chart yet.

Ok.

Ac, in virgo but i think its in the early stages, so it might be too early to make a decision.

The moon is in the 6th and your boss is mars in the 1st (virgo)

The moon is in a weak house (6th) and also in a weak sign (aquarius)

Moon is void, i think

How is it so far?

Good that you noticed the things that you did, especially the 3* AC. 3* is fine though. 2'59'59 is the technical cut-off, so I don't worry about it and realize that the question is early, but not too early. The moon is at 15* so for me that balances some of it out. The moon is neither too late nor too early. It's neither changing sign nor house right away, so I think all is well in this chart. Anyway, I'll take it as a very good sign that Regulus is so close.

In the above chart,

I am: Mercury (because Virgo rules the AC), Mars (because it is in the first house), and the Moon (because it always co-rules the question unless quesited steals it). I won't take venus because it is his main ruler.

My Boss: Venus Rx (because 10th is ruled by Taurus), the Sun (because he's a man, an older man), also Jupiter (because it's in his house), Mercury (because 1.its in his house and 2. it's intercepted in his house as well)

In this case, Mercury is my main ruler so although I have not read much about this situation, I believe it remains with me. The only other possibility would be that the moon or mars would become my main ruler instead. I would have to ask someone more experienced than me about this.

For this chart, I am going to assume that I keep it.

His Assistants: (His assistants are the 6th house from the 10th house- 10 becomes 1... so the assistants house is house 3). They are also Venus Rx. Since they both Venus and the assistants, being girls, have no other significators (I don't see the moon belonging with them because they are younger and they are his "servants"... somehow the moon doesn't suit them)... since they steal his ruler I will leave him with the Sun and Jupiter.

Another interesting thing about the house of the assistants is that it is also my radical house of communication, so it ties in well.

Yes, the 6th, 8th and 12th are considered unfortunate houses, and the 6th and 12th are weak for being cadent, but it is a question about work that I would be doing for him, and the moon is received by him, as am I since Gemini co-rules his house. So, I don't see it as weak in context. The moon at 15* Aquarius is in the terms of Venus and the face of Mercury... so it is being received again both by him as well as his assistants.

The moon will (applying) trine the Sun in 3* and Saturn in 7*... so this will happen within the 15* it has left in Aquarius. So for me this is not void. There is more than one definition of VOC though so... confusing.

Since it will trine his significator, as well as Saturn which is ruling the 5th and 6th houses, the houses of entertainment and work.. this happens to he a job related to entertainment... that is a positive sign.

Our secondary significators (Mars and Jupiter) are also making an applying trine> this is another fortunate aspect.

There are separating squares with both the Sun and Venus to my Mars. I was recently asked to work again for them, but could not. (Venus is also ruling my house of money... so I guess it's also showing some money that I lost.) The Sun also separating a conjunction from Venus Rx would probably indicate him asking them to contact me this last time.

The fact that my main significator is making an applying square to Uranus (ruling other peoples money for me) is not a good sign... I hope if I do work for them again that this doesn't mean I will have some kind of problem getting the money. The other problem could be that the 8th rules sex... I understand what this problem could mean but I am better off not revealing that... really hoping it doesn't mean that.

There are also applications to Neptune and Pluto. Neptune, a trine, and Pluto an opposition. Neptune is Rx and rules the arts, I'm assuming this could indicate returning to work again for him artistically. It is in the 6th house (work), but at the very, very end, so it should be considered the 7th (legal contracts?). Pluto is Rx in the 5th house of entertainment/enjoyment/romance. It's an opposition which is the most bothersome. The fact that it's an opposition and it's a sexual planet in a possibly sexual house is a problem. It worries me.

Notice that a lot of this action is happening in signs ruled by Mercury (Gemini and Virgo) regarding communication contact, which was my main topic or signs ruled by Venus (money, the arts) which plays a huge role in this. Even the ascendant makes sense, Virgo the sign of work, Mars the sign of the body (this is physical work).

Another thing you can look at is the querent vs the 11th house of hopes/wishes. I hope to work for him again. This would be Mercury/Mars vs Moon. In this case there isn't significant action. The sesquisquare is like a baby square... so actually I think I would probably not get exactly what I want... so, is this one of the problems concerning the 8th and 5th house matters that I mentioned above? possibly...

Another thing that I wonder about is the trine to the Sun ruling the 12th house. I am trying to figure out just what the 12th house signifies in this case. I haven't forgotten that the 12th house represents secret romantic affairs... but I don't want to jump to conclusions

Something else I need to think about- the angles. We say that the situation starts on the AC axis and ends on the IC axis... so it's going from mutable to fixed. The start of this unstable or I will need to adapt to the needs of others, and it will end in a way that is hard to alter. I am not too sure what this means for me. I think it means that part of what they will want me to do may not be something I feel I can or want to do, but in the end, whatever I decide, I will be bound to doing. Agreeing or disagreeing to what they want will be the end of the story.

But, with all the applying trines between significators, I think that yes is pretty much the answer for this one. I think I will be contacted again. I just think there is a surprise in store for me regarding some condition they might require of me in connection with the offer... we'll see.

There's still stuff to look at... there always is, but there is a first look... besides, I'm sure your head is already spinning with all that new info.

Lol... no problem, I was where you are at not that long ago... welcome aboard the horary learning train!

I think, like astrology itself, in horary, you always feel like you have so much to learn... that feeling never goes away!

I don't mind putting up another one of mine if you want to try on another chart...

So i understand the sun represents the man in a relationship question...

And the asc is the person asking the question (girl)

So what happens if the asc is in leo and doesnt the sun represent leo? With the sun sign in gemini?

From what i can tell the main planets, Sun (11th) moon, venus, jupiter are in gemini (10th)

Mercury in cancer (11th)

Mars virgo (2nd)

Saturn Libra (3rd)

Sun seperating mars ( i see the little S)

Moon applying to mars and saturn.. (i see the little A)

Mercury applying to Mars

Jupiter applying to venus and mars

Saturn Seperating sun, but applying Moon, merc, Venus and mars...

Pluto capricorn (5th)

Ok does this make sense at all? Or am i reading it wrong?

Laptop is a dud at the moment... On ipad and unless you know of a site that supports uploads without flash i cannot upload anything at the moment

The more i look at the chart the more i think i got it.... Well i dunno if its the correct answer lol but i think i understand something lol...

But what confuses me is if going by the traditional rules that sun in the man and asc is the questioner, me i guess.

Sun in gemini
Asc in leo

But leo's ruling planet is the sun and gemini by mercury...

Who is who then lol

Okokok iam getting it now...

Sun in gemini
Asc leo

Iam going to start with the moon.

Moon in gemini in the 10

The 10th house is Social status career,

The natural ruler of the 10th is capricorn

On the chart...

Capricorn is in the 5th with pluto..
Coupled with moon in gemini in the 11th

Means friction?

Finding the natural ruler of the 10th in the 5th house means responsabilities? Its not all fun and games? Stress!

This is taking alot of mental energy lol... My poor little gemini brain.

Jnuethird:

Well, when one persons main significator is the sun, moon, or venus, apparently it overrides in general.

To clarify a little bit:
Ac=Leo, therefore Querent's significator is the Sun. The sun is in Gemini, therefore the dispositor of the Sun is Mercury.

I still have no idea who the other person is because I don't know what sign the 7th house cusp is in. Whatever is ruling the 7th house cusp will tell you the main significator of the other person in this chart.

If it's a relationship question, then, in general you would use the 7th house to represent the other person. In cases, if it's a love affair, then use the 5th, if it's a secret love affair, sometimes the 12th. But, in most cases, you will use the 7th to represent the other person.

I don't think you are reading anything wrong (though without the chart at the moment to verify, it's difficult), but the point is to be reading things that add information to your question, and to understand their strength, symbolism and interaction with the other symbols which add information in this particular question.

Here are some links to basics that might be helpful for the moment: http://www.serenapowers.com/horary.html

COPY-PASTE:
The Querent - The person asking the question is referred to as the querent.
The Quesited - The person or thing asked about is referred to as the quesited.
The Significators - The significators are the planets ruling the querent and the quesited.
Usually the outer planets are not used as main significators, only the traditional rulers. So, Mars
ruling Scorpio, Saturn ruling Aquarius and Jupiter ruling Pisces. Sometimes a third person will ask a question in which they have no direct role to play. For instance when someone asks about a friend who is about to have a baby. In such cases the querent would be ruled by the planet ruling the ascendant. The astrologer nevertheless should ignore their ruling planet and concentrate only on the significators for the friend and her expected baby.

Ok, I can see the chart now, but I will ask you to answer some things for your practice:
(answer whatever you can, probably you don't know some of the things yet, but try anyway).

1. What is the AC ruler?

2. AC ruler is found in which sign and house?

3. Which house rules the matter?

4. What is the matters ruler?

5. Where (sign/house) is the ruler of the matter?

6. What are the co-rulers of the Querent (AC)? And where are they?

7. What are the co-rulers of the Quesited (matter)? And where are they?

8. What is the first aspect made by the Querent's and quesited's primary significators?

9. Are there any major aspects made between co-rulers of the querent and quesited?

10. Where is the moon (sign/house)? Does it reflect something about the question? Does it show where the querent's mind really is?

11. What are they future (applying) aspects of the moon (only until it changes sign)?

12. Is anything within 1* of a fixed star?

13. Which of the primary significators is faster?

14. Where are the benefics and malefics? Are any of the significators at the same degree as any of the benefics or malefics? Is anything conjunct a malefic or benefic?

15. Is there mutual reception between any of the significators of the querent and quesited? (for example: venus is in Scorpio and mars is in Taurus= mutual reception because they are in each others sign)

16. Are any significators mutually applying? (moving towards each other because one is moving backwards in retrograde)

17. Where are the North and South Node?

18. What is the degree of the Node? And, is there any other planet in the chart at the same degree?

19. Are either of the nodes conjunct anything?

20. Where is the part of fortune (sign/house)?

21. Is any significator at a critical degree in a sign (29* or 0*)? Is any significator close to changing a house?

22. What is the cross (AC/DC-MC/IC axis)? Meaning: Is it on Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable, or mixed signs?

23. Are there any logical Arabic Parts that would be useful to calculate? Is anything within a degree of this Part?

24.Is anything between the two benefics or between the two malefics?

25. Is anything within 17* of the Sun? (Cazimi=0-17 minutes; Combust= 17 minutes- 8.5 degrees; Under the Sunbeams= 8.5-17 degrees)

26. Is the moon (or significator) Void of Course? (there is more than one definition of void of course)

27. Is anything in the Via Combusta (15*Libra to 15* Scorpio)?

28. Is anything Peregrine?

29. Is any significator in it's own sign, house, exalted, in detriment or in fall?

30. Is any significator in the sign of the other significator, house, exaltation, detriment or fall?

Well.... that's quite a bit for now, but I assure you, there is much, much more...

So, I'll help with what you've done so far. You should try the rest if you can or let me know what you need explained.

1. What is the AC ruler? Yes, Sun (because Leo rules the cusp)

2. AC ruler is found in which sign and house?
Yes, in Gemini in the 11th

3. Which house rules the matter?
Yes, 7th because it's a (general) relationship question

4. What is the matters ruler?
Aquarius rules the cusp, but that makes the ruler Saturn.

5. Where (sign/house) is the ruler of the matter?
Saturn is in Libra in the 3rd
(Libra happens to be the natural ruler of romance relationships)

6. What are the co-rulers of the Querent (AC)? And where are they?
Since the querent is female, you can use the natural ruler Venus as a co-ruler.
In general, the moon always rules the querent. So the querent has 2 co-rulers: the Moon and Venus. Both in Gemini in the 10th.

7. What are the co-rulers of the Quesited (matter)? And where are they?
Usually the Sun is a general co-ruler of men but since it is the querent's primary ruler, it wouldn't make sense to use it for both.
Neptune is in his house, so Neptune (by modern use) is his co-ruler. Neptune is in Pisces in house 7, which is his first house of self.

Hope that helps clear it up.
