Hey there!

I saw your question on the Hanna thread- and I just want to to ask your landlord for a breakdown of the deductions from your deposit.. and formal receipts.

If he/she cannot produce them, then he has taken the deposit illegally. I use to be in the UK, and I assume the housing laws are somewhat similar.

Hey MinceyMouse! Thanks for your thoughts

The problem is, he claims that the mattress is dirty and there are yellow stains on it; he also took a picture of the mattress and he has the receipt. there are indeed yellow stains but I do not remember if I caused them or if they appeared within time. I only stayed in the room for 6 months and I do not remember anything that caused these yellow stains. One reason might be that I often dried my clothes in the room and maybe the humidity caused the yellow stains. Other than that, I put a mattress sheet on it from day 1.. It's really interesting to be honest, I feel deceived because half of my deposit is gone.

I have changed 3 houses in the past and I never had any problems like this.. That's why I wanna know if he is right or if I am deceived

Normal wear and tear is ok and should not be penalized. It's not ok to deduct a ludicrous amount of money from a deposit. Is there any rental protection websites you can check out? It should be in the Civil Code. Maybe you can look it up?

My ex landlady tried to do the same thing, however, the mattress already had stains on it previously which she conveniently 'forgot'. I had taken pictures when I first moved in.

Indeed.. It's really funny that he deducted the money from the mattress only and not because "the room is dirty" (which is a common excuse) or some other reason..

Unfortunately I did not take so many pictures when I moved in and out and I have now no time to sort out this matter.. I have lab hours the whole week and I have to study for the labs +a presentation I have to do on Thursday..

I don't know.. Maybe he's right but I just cannot understand how I may have caused it.. He also offered to give me the mattress after deducting the money and if I lived nearby, I would have taken it.. It's really weird :/ I do not have enough evidence to prove it unfortunately..
