Hey moonfish, Not a reading, no intuition just my opinion - go for it! Just from reading your post you sound excited by the prospect of adding him, so go for it, if you don't try you never know. It's not like you are strangers and you are adding a random stranger...
Either he'll accept or he won't... If he doesn't at least you tried...
