Question: Is he my soul mate or did he come into my life to help illuminate a soul lesson?

The backstory:

I recently got my first set of Lenormand cards. So far, I'm feeling pretty good about the readings I've done. The cards are pretty straightforward.

Lately I've been doing some soul searching (pluto is heading straight for my ASC) and I realized that I've always kept a very hard line between my personal life and my public life. I'm not famous - I'm not in the public eye in any way; I just have always kept my family life and my work life, school life, friend life -separate. I met someone I thought was my soul mate and it did not work out as I hoped. I've been pretty, ah, confused and frustrated (putting it mildly) trying to discern why he came into my life. Doing some meditation it came to me that this was the first person I've wholeheartedly wanted, no YEARNED to throw back the curtain for. I had an overwhelming urge to be open and authentic in a way that is totally out of character for me. I am honest and open with everyone, but I keep my two worlds separate. It never occurred to me that this is, in fact, a form of dishonesty. Anyway - I did a reading and my question was - is he my soul mate or did he come along to help me learn this soul lesson?

I think I may be too close to forest to see the trees because this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Help?
