I've recently reconnected with an old friend. We were attracted to each other but he was involved with someone so we decided to become just friends. We lost touch for several years after I left and cut all ties. Now, we talk again online and are planning on meeting next week. But even though the connection seems to still be there, it doesn't look like we can give our relationship a go as he is moving to another city soon, and I can't follow him there because I have problems regarding my papers. I told him I don't want to explore what we have because we would be in different places anyway.

I would like to know what role does this person have in my life? Why is he back -- is it just to give me closure? What do I need to know? And most importantly: did I do the right thing by telling him we should not even try because there is already a hindrance?
