@CeriI asked the I ching, and got a reading about birds too. I looked into further and it reads as beginning/preparation. That is, before completion that there is disorder to the order. I don't have a clean read, so I originally decided not to post. However, since Randall bumped the post, I gave in.
Regardless, I think he did see/sense your presence, but he has not yet ready for action. How do you feel about, Ceri? Why are you wondering?

(The hawk, as a bird of prey, is a threat to the small livestock between the castle walls, but also to the people. There will probably be chickens, pigeons perhaps. The duke, as leader of the castle, is responsible for safety of people and livestock. He therefore skillfully shoots the hawk.)
