In astrology for example if you decided to just up and walk away from the life with you parents. Would there be any karma for doing so?

Nah, I don't think so. If you don't want to be around them, it's better to leave.

In my understanding it is how you go about the leaving that creates the Karma.

I read about a woman who had done some kind of past life regression. In this lifetime she was with a man who never could get close to her and he left her for another woman, she had kids that she was really protective over them. In her regression, she saw him as her child that she had abandoned and because she left him, he died. This lifetime this is why she was very protective over her kids and he left her due to the karma that existed between them.

If I could suggest that if you leave maybe keep contact as at some point all kids leave , grow up and make their own way in the world. Unless the relationship with them is very toxic.

I mean like if one day I just decided to leave and didn't actually tell them. I just leave and didn't come back. I would call and let my mom know I am ok though.
