Can someone explain how is it that exchanges work? Please.

I know. It's kind of a stupid question, but reading through the posts I haven't figure it out just yet.

Like what are you asking?

Exchanging is that when you give a reading and have one in return. If you don't know or can't exchange (with tarot, lenormand, cartomancy, horary or give a intuitive reading) you can just ask if someone can give you a reading "for free". Many are also offering free readings here without exchange.

I'm not a reader, but it's basically when you offer to do a reading for someone in exchange if they read for you.

Hopefully that makes sense, lol.

If you have anything to offer
chart reading/ tarot reading/intuitive reading...
then you offer your expertise in return for getting a reading
i.e.

You ask 1 question and say, well I can offer in return to look at your natal chart for something .

If you have nothing to offer back, then you just ask for a reading from someone and say " I dont do exchanges, but can someone look into this "
for example

looks like this

person X - my question is .... does someone want to exchange, I offer tarot reading
Person Y - my question is.... I will do an intuitive reading for you in exchange.

some people even specify as to say " only tarot for tarot exchanges" or something similar

It can also be said to be an exchange of energy, as well.

Also, if you are unsure (from experience) that someone will give you the exchange they keep promising, then wait for them to do their reading first before you offer anything up.

I've seen people get mad about this, but as you probably know, there are ways to avoid getting into battles with someone.
