hello, so i've been dealing w/ existential anxiety over the past 6 or 7 months and it has been on and off. this is maybe bc i'm at a stage in my life where i finally am having independence and freedom in controlling my life (i am graduating college, and becoming more self-reliant as i am moving out of my parents' home)..i guess it's just being scared of being in control and sometimes i just get really scared at the thought of death and life....i know deep down that i will live a long, healthy life and there is a purpose i have to fulfill in this lifetime but i'm just wondering what are the steps/advice that should be taken in a spiritual lens (i know therapy is important too). i just want to get over this stage and not be so hyperaware of my existence..

i think it's just fear that this stage of my life (basically being dependent/my parents being in control of my life) is ending and a new cycle is approaching (m asserting my autonomy and living my life the way i want, which is scary)....

Hi Javaweb!

This is just advice you can try..when I've felt overwhelmed, etc., I would normally sit down and write out my goals (5 years or less) and make a list of things I need to accomplish in the short-term (year or less)...pull it all from your brain and either write it down or store it electronically. Sometimes we get so much "stuff" in our heads it can be overwhelming. Even just writing down mundane stuff you need to get done for the week can be helpful.

Hope this helps,
Spring

Javaweb, once you start getting super busy with work and maintain a social life, I suspect you'll stop hyper analysing everything which is going on. It's a transition and the best you can do is to go with the flow rather than looking back to how things used to be. This may also mean forgetting the details of past events which have shaped you to who you are today- it's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just something which is part of growing up and evolving as an independent human being. There are no 'steps' so to speak. It's just a matter of time and finding the right people to be able to talk to and share things with. I wish you the best.

Javaweb... *heart*

What an honest "ACCOMPLISHMENT" you have made!
Take a moment, and let the 'other' reality set in. The reality that you are actually-really GRADUATING??!! woot woot!!!

*EXTRA-special-feather for your cap*

You were able to
* set a goal,
* be disciplined enough to fulfill ALL the requirements of it--

* You did it as a 'long-term' program ..
... (the span of years it took to graduate).
* You did it with each semester course for the 'short-term' ..
... (Proving project time-management skills, doing all the work required; step-by-step day-by-day-- in spite of what~all else was going on to distract you).

That is something to be VERY very proud of.

And, what it took to make it through college,
is EXACTLY what it will take to Live the rest of your Life, Successfully.

You have PROVED you have 'all the skills' you'll need.

It's not 'the what' of what you studied, but that you made a plan, stuck with it, and were able to reap the rewards OF that now.

That was not an 'easy' accomplishment.
(I know... because I went to college for 4 years (1970s), two (almost)bachelors, and even 'unofficial' credits towards a masters-- and I was never able to finish the undergrad work, for a variety of very legitimate reasons.
.. I came within one-additional-semester needed for some stupid-stuff I missed pursuing two separate humanity degrees.
.. It's honestly too late now--- but I DEFINITELY admire people who were ABLE to actually accomplish their degree and graduate.)

I 'understand' the "existential" part of your crisis. awwww. I suspect it is 'normal' ... like engagement-wedding jitters, and, the other-side of being actually married. Quite a change?

You're exchanging one kind of life that you've had for YEARS...

and heading out on your own.... adventure!!! yesssssss!!!!!
(topic) BATTLE! (John Travolta, from movie Michael, 1996) [1:52] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30xspies8Eg

Well?? *cough cough spew* ...
If you're going into the world of finance, then, that last vid may have extra emphasis for you!

You'll BE okay.
You've GOT 'everything' it takes, already in you.

It's just a "new horizon" ...
Like some colloquial sayings express...
You're like a cow being transferred and introduced to a new field, looking at a new gateway.

If I can gently suggest something?
Perhaps 're-wording' your sense of fear? ... Adrenaline juices are present whether you are in-fear, OR, in a state of Excitement...

Try out re-framing your nerves--
Say that you are excited about your Life!! You have your Next Great Adventure waiting just-ahead of you...
*breathe* .....
You have ALL the skills you need, already inside you.

hahahaha!!!! ...

from lyrics
My Destiny Calls.. and I GOOOOO! *laughing*
And the Wild Winds of Fortune
will Carry me Onward,
Wherewithsoever they blow..
Onward to Glory I Go!

(music) I am I, Don Quixote! (from Man of LaMancha, 1972) [2:33] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEnDOXmyU-o

Anyways.

I wish you the BEST that Life has to Offer!

Life is designed with 'fails' in it--
Those are for you to Grow and Become Stronger.

It's about 'the journey' ...
And remember to stop, play, and 'smell the roses'.
