My boyfriend has been having a really tough while, I'm wondering if his Saturn Return has started or is away to?

the transiting north node is conjunct his Chiron now and the south node was conjunct to his Saturn/Uranus midpoint on 3/15.this is a heavy mentl energy on hismind .chiron is very critical and judgement so I would expect him to be finding fault with everything. the south node can bring the negative energy you mentioned. with the transiting south node conjunct his Saturn/Uranus midpoint, he is problem thinking about breaking up or making some other dramatic change in his life.
thtoo vibration together are very critical and I would expect him to be criticizing you needlessly. the chiron transit can bring psychic energies around him but he is probably to negative to use them constructively and might even be very paranoia of others trying to affect him.

the good thing is that the node will be transiting the venus/mars midpoint at the end of the month as well as transiting the natal south node. this is an aspect was loving feelings. so he will come out of his funk, but you would need to look at the composite to see how this might affect you.
