This is one of my most favorite books ever. It is also what introduced me to and sparked my interest in, Raja Yoga. I found it used at the same shop I found the Lion Path. A woman had dropped off a big box of books and I was lucky enough to pick both of these titles up. And I'm so glad I did because reading this one effected my life in such a profound and positive way; altering and reshaping the course. I highly recommend it if you havent read it already. You really must experience it for yourSelf.

(I'll type out what it says in the jacket)

"Initiation is one of those unusual books that transcend all categories - and almost defy description. It is an autobiographical novel about a woman, with its full measure of events and experiences, but its real concern is mystic truth, more especially, the occult teaching of the priesthood in ancient Egypt, Elisabeth Haich is an authority on yoga and the author, with Selvarajan Yesudian, of well-known books on the subject. Here she reveals further workings of life, the law of Karma and reincarnation, and the esoteric doctrine that a few in each generation seek, find and pass on. The girl in her story is prepared for initiation, in an earlier life, by the High Priest Ptahhotep, who leads her step by step, in harmony with her development, to an understanding of the ultimate mysteries. This part of the book has only been matched, in rare vision by Joan Grant's Winged Pharaoh. The story ends, as it begins, in the present, with an exhilarating view of human destiny. It is a book that can be enjoyed at many different levels, as a novel, as a reconstruction of another, stranger epoch, and above all as a liberating experience; for to read it is to share, in some degree, the initiation."

One day I would like to read her other book titled Yoga Uniting East and West.

"Author's Note

It is far from my intentions to want to provide a historical picture of Egypt. A person living who is living in any given place has not the faintest idea of the peculiarities of his country, and he does not consider customs, language and religion from an ethnographic point of view. He takes everything as a matter of course. He is a human being and has his joys and sorrows, just like every other human being, anywhere, any place, any time; for that which is truly human is timeless and changeless. My concern here is only with the human, not with ethnography and history. That is why I have avoided using Egyptian sounding words to create the illusion of an Egyptian atmosphere. The teachings of the High Priest Ptahhotep are given in modern language so thatmodern people may understand them. For religious symbols also, I have chosen to use modern terms so that all may understand what these symbols mean.

People of today underrstand us better if we say 'God' than if we were to use the Egyptian term 'Ptah' for the same concept. If we say 'Ptah' everyone immediately thinks, 'Oh yes, Ptah, the Egyptian God'. No! Ptah was not an Egyptian God. On the contrary, the Egyptians called the same God whom we call God, by the name of Ptah. And to take another example, their term for Satan was Seth. The words God and Satan carry meanings for us today which we would not get from the words Ptah or Seth. For people living in our times, these latter terms, Ptah and Seth, are empty, dry and meaningless. The term Logos and the expression creative principle have a meaning for us today which we would not get from the term 'Horus Hawk'. Electricity was just as much electricity thousands of years ago as it is today, and an atom was an atom, siply by a different name. I make these comments here so that my readers may be able to devote their attention to the content of the story which follows here, without being halted unnecessarily by what may appear to be an anachronism merely because of the terms used - as for example when the Egyptian High Priest speaks of a 'chain reaction'! I have intentionally avoided trying to reproduce or imitate the ancient terminology for phenomena we how know under names everyone is accustomed to using."

oh yes, i did read the book and it's actually one of my favorites too. i couldn't put it down. i read it about two years ago and i too found it in a used book store. there are parts of it though that are still over my head, parts i'm unsure about, and of course some universal truths (all mixed up) but i most love the part that describes the process she goes through as a child and young woman because her voice and her actions i can relate to in many scenarios. i love "journey" type novels, and stories because it makes me appreciate my own journey a bit more. why i posted this though is that if anyone could elaborate on parts that are discussed in the books, parts they agree or disagree with. <3
