WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - With war looming, British and U.S. aircraft dropped nearly 2 million more leaflets into Iraq on Wednesday, targeting 29 military and civilian sites in the southeastern part of the country, the U.S. military said.
As the countdown to 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) Thursday in Iraq (8 p.m. EST Wednesday) continued in President George W. Bush's 48-hour deadline for President Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq or face war, the drops brought the total number of warning leaflets scattered in recent months to more than 17 million.
The 1,980,000 leaflets carried varying messages designed to calm the fears of Iraqi civilians and urge their military to surrender without a fight in any invasion, a U.S. military announcement from the region said.
Bush said in a televised address on Monday night that Saddam had 48 hours to get out and that the United States would strike at a time of its own choosing if the Iraqi president did not leave, a warning that Saddam spurned on Tuesday.
As the leaflets again fluttered down on Iraq, more than 280,000 U.S. and British troops along with dozens of missile-carrying warships and up to 1,000 aircraft were arrayed in the Gulf region facing Iraq.
