i have a friend in the national guard. during his past monthly meeting, the officers asked the guardman "how many of you would choose to be in iraq fighting if you could" and almost everyone raised their hand. Then they asked for what reasons everyone had, and my friend said that the answer "to kill" was the response more times than his stomach could handle. (although my friend has his reasons for wanting to go over, he has since decided that morally and spiritually he could not kill anyone and tho he was thinking about getting sent over after his next training period, has decided not to.)i wonder how prevalent this attitude is within the armed forces. how differently do you think wars and conflicts would be if both sides didn't really want to kill each other? i know there are many people fighting who believe in the cause, and are reluctant to fight, but how many just wanna kick some a** and plow down any side that is opposed to theirs? the same goes for both sides of the fight... it's not just that you're willing to die for what you believe, but that you're eager to kill for it... it makes me terribly sad. Patriarchal Meatheadedness! Arming the young adults of the Armed Forces is not peaceful, how could it be. Faith for the future is all's there's left! IP: Logged |

I know that neither my Sister or any of her friends wanted to go at all. When my Sister found the Children there starving and begging for food, she wanted to help them. Not kill because of or for them, but help them. Feed them, give them clean clothes, medical attention, affection - that kind of stuff. Of course, my Sister and her friends are not a fighting unit. She is communications and her best friend and roommate is a nurse. So maybe that's where the difference lies. IP: Logged |

I'm disappointed to hear that thoseguardsmen replied in that manner. I was in the Army in the early 1970's and I don't recall anyone I talked to being so bloodthirsty. Even the Special Forces guys were pretty cool and they were animals, most of them, I never heard a one talk like a cold-blooded killer. I'm sure there are SOME soldiers like that (civilians too), but I've never known any. Maybe it was a group mentality thing where your friend was. I've seen that, one person gives a stupid reply and everyone chimes in the same, afraid to say different. I don't know...too bad... IP: Logged |

i guess i also witnessed somewhat of a similar attitude when the troops were being interviewed before the war. Many expressed that they were really quite bored sitting around with nothing to do, and were eager to get out there and fight... which may sound normal and idyllic to some of you but it was just the way they said it that made me feel something was morbidly wrong... I remember one soldier was reluctant to do so, and made some very thoughtful comments about how he doesn't want to fight, and it was sad we were going to war, but if this its what it's coming down to then he's proud to be in the army and will do his best on the battle field... but that didnt seem to be the general position... of course i'm sure the media want to show enthusiastic troops to keep the war in public favor...IP: Logged | |
