I believe that the real question it isn't between being from the "left", "right" or "center", the good and the evil, democracy or socialism, the occident and the east, the religious and the secular.
It's between the fundamental and the fundamentalist.

The fundamentalist bases himself on an ideal of purity. It doesn't matter if he is from the left or the right, what matters is that he believes he has the absolute true. The antagonist it's Satan. So, he "must" exterminates the divergence.

From left or right, a religious person or not, the fundamentalist transforms everything — art, politics, opinion, sex — in divinity.

The fundamentalism is Islamic. It is American. It is Jewish. It is Christian. It is European. It is Brazilian. It is from extreme left. It is from extreme right. It is economical. It is religious.

The fundamentalist says: “Democracy is evil, socialism is good”. Or, “Democracy is good, socialism is evil".

And we are all fundamentalists when we wanted to win discussions in the base of scream. When, with fear of doubt and of ignorance, we believe that we have definitive explanations on facts that demand reflection and time.

Fundamentalist it's to say that Human Rights-yes human...our rights- should be forgotten in search of an ideal.

On the other hand, the fundamental has consistence. It doesn't swallow generalizations, nor it is slave of any ideology. It prefers to ally to the common sense, to plurality, to History…and the most important : it is a mortal enemy of the obscurantism.

Fundamental it is to be conscious that the fundamentalism is not an external fact, on which we read in the newspaper and that threat us as innocent individuals.

Yet, to combat "any type" of fundamentalism, we must first know that "it" is born exactly inside of us, goes out through the "song" of our mouth and it is strengthens every day, in our home, in our work, in our dreams and in our actions.

Jackie....that was great!! I wasn't around when Pidaua's post gathered such a "readership" (some pretty strong words on that thread)....and you've really hit the bulls-eye!
I never rationalized opinion in that way - and it felt good to see something of such clarity in terms of logic and truth right infront of your eyes.
I've gathered that you're against the war and US foreign policy...I am too. I am not solidly against the concept of "war"...but I believe it is the same thing as the coercive power of the state. It should be used sparingly and only in times of utmost necessity.
Otherwise you have a tyrant - one who does as he wishes with utter disregard to others' rights, wishes and opinions.
And I just can't help thinking that this is exactly the image America has painted in the minds of countless Arabs with this war....and countless others.
Bush definitely has a heart, but so does Saddam Hussain as unbelievable as that sounds.
Since ive not really corresponded with Pidaua personally I would not otherwise include her words/thoughts in this post but I think it is relevant.
She believed that Harpy was against Bush, as if carrying out some personal vendetta against the poor man or somethin. If that was the case, I guess id be joining Harpy.
But that's not the case. I just believe that Bush is not wise enough for such a task. In other words, I doubt his powers of discretion. Does that make me a Bush-hater? I dont think so. But yes, there are several of his actions that I thoroughly despise...like a war which practically no one supports outside the US.

"I really have to question your motivations as you cannot even give credit where it is due. Do you think that a majority of the population is just plain stupid and that you are above the rest because you see conspiracy where none actually exists? (Even the most liberal publication shows that 77% of Americans back this war)" (this is quoting one of Pidaua's posts)

Well the majority of the world's population was against the war...does it make that majority stupid or do Americans view themselves as above the rest?

Ananya
ps. Sorry if this does sound rude on my part Pidaua or anyone here who may take offence to this. Its not meant to be so. Im just trying to drive home a point about majorities and their sacrificial animal - the minority.
pps. Randall, dont look at me like that. No dont...aah, that admonishing stare is really scary!!! I know you might just be a little more than ****** at my postings. and u probably think what kind of a person i am who believes that terrorists are humans...but if ur willing for dialogue ill give u an answer why. But first lemme know I aint on your "first to boot" list!!

Brilliant, Jaqueline!

Thanks for sharing. I think you're absolutely right. I have to say, the fundamentalist lefties are really an embarassment to the rest of us clear thinking lefties. Angry rioting mobs of lefties attacking people driving by. This is what we had going on in Portland at the start of the Iraq war. It's an embarassment, really. The media doesn't help. The only lefties they want to show are the misbehaving ones. There was NEVER once a media crew at any of the candle light vigils I attended to send love and light to the people of Iraq and our soldiers. Not one. Why? Cuz the fundamentalist righties only want to see the bad lefties. They aren't interested in the clear thinkers of the bunch. The rational lefties that aren't causing riots in the streets. There are just as many rational lefties as there are fundamental lefties... as with righties, I'm sure. The media plays it up for both sides, only publicizing the fundamentalists (who are no better and no worse than the fellows who flew the planes into those buildings IMO). We have really got to start questioning the media... especially FAUX news... they're the worst. Their brand of fundamentalist patriotism is pretty sickening (to me).

Perhaps you're unaware of the new PEW report just out in which journalists rate their political leanings, among other things. http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?PageID=829

54% say they are moderates but the public isn't buying that, not in the least. 24% say they're liberal. The public isn't buying that either since their expericence is that those who say they see themselves as moderates are so liberal they don't even realize what moderate means. The American Press is totally out of step with the majority of American citizens and only 7% of the press say they are conservative.

A recent poll among journalists and media types showed about 90% leaned towards the democrats. The state of the modern democrat party is close to being rabidly liberal and yet, these same "reporters" said they are 54% moderates. They are so extreme and biased they come off acting like a political arm of the democrat party. And you complain about Fox News?

The last time the PEW reports questioned citizens about the news media, they got the shock of their lives. The public said the news services were overwhelmingly liberal, biased and untrustworthy. In fact a list was published by PEW about who the public trusts.
Journalists, reporters and broadcast news types finished with less credibility and trust than used car salespeople. That's about right in my opinion too.

Good numbers jwhop. I wish more people would use real numbers and statistics to back up their claims.

... and what about the poll that tells us the political rankings of the owners of the media forum the journalists work for?

My point was that the media plays conservatives and libreals against each other.

It is a rare journalist that is reporting news for the people. They're all about ratings... regaurdless of their political offiliation.

Seems the common feeling outside of the US, possibly outside of N. America is that a stance of apathy is best....It must work well for them in their own lands far and wide, but then again...not much is expected of them by the rest of the world.

The whole goal, up and above all the rhetoric and constant political pi$$ing contests was and still is: To Root Out and Destroy Terrorist Groups, Including Those Who Harbor Them. This objective is for the benefit of the ENTIRE FREE WORLD. How many other attacks have the al-Qaeda orchestrated against smaller nations since 9/11? I've lost track myself. It just happened to take an attack on US soil to kick them into gear, same as what brought them into WWII...an attack on American soil. Unfortuneately, that has become the loud and urgent wake up call, the call that awakes the sleeping giant.

I agree, Jaqueline...being too dogmatic in your ideals leads to trouble. The world is a constantly changing thing, with exceptions to every rule. If you can't be flexible in life, you will eventually snap in half. If you are too flexible, you won't be able to stand on your own. The key is a happy medium, as is true with all things. Weighing each situation on it's own merit, and being fair in your opinions. Also, never forget that you probably don't have all the details, or they may have be presented to you in a biased fashion. See clearly, think clearly, and BE FAIR to your fellow man, for God's sake! (Lords' name NOT taken in vain there )

Maybe it will take an al-Qaeda attack on every single nation, before they will each support the US in this important objective. Or, they'll do like Spain and just back down to the terrorists immediately. Ah, yes...you see how effective the al-Qaeda's methods are? No wonder they employ them. They usually work very well. Except on superpowers, of course. They are actually able to DO something about it. Why would anyone put up with that if they were in a position to do something about it? WHY?? I think any nation that does not support the US in this objective, at least in principle, are cowards. They're too afraid of terrorism to take a stand against it. Well, I'm sorry, but I don't want it in my world, personally. It cannot be allowed to prevail, because in my mind, that would be evil prevailing over good, and we simply can't have that.
